Do you like Harry as a person? I think he is okay. He just seemed very stubborn. Sometimes I liked him and Sometimes I didn't. What about you?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked him the majority of the time... sometimes I though he should've thought things through a little more. But I felt bad when Sirius Black died... :(

Me too! He was one of my favorite characters! I loved all of the marauders! except for Peter Pettigrew.

Yeah...

message 5: by Pandy (new)

Pandy I like Sirius, bun not as much as many people seem to. Harry is my favorite character. I love that he's flawed. Because he's human, he's so easy to relate to, so I think it's natural that he can sometimes be impulsive and quick-tempered, as well as loyal, loving, and brave.

message 6: by Mirza (new)

Mirza (mirzaarhasan) | 403 comments He is as normal a person as goes, not really worth the fuss around him.

A little stubborn, sure, but he seems to be making mistakes all the times - getting into situations he could have easily avoided. Sometimes, he even seems a little stupid too.

I don't really like Harry.

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura why not!!!?

message 9: by April (new)

April Poole (fangirlapril) I'm not a huge fan of Harry either...especially in OOTP when he was just being all teen-angsty and complaining and feeling bad for himself. That really annoyed me...especially because that book could have been a lot shorter if he had done that less...

message 10: by Pandy (new)

Pandy I actually love OotP and Harry partly for that reason. In OotP Harry feels neglected, and as if the the whole world is against him, which is completely natural for a teenager growing up. After all, most of the wizarding community is against him, so he can't help lashing out at his friends. He's also being tortured by Umbridge and his dreams. Dumbledore won't even look at him, let alone explain what's going on with Voldemort (Harry begins to think he's not even trusted.). To add on to that, he's plagued by fears for Sirius. I just feel that it would have been odd if Harry wasn't visibly (and greatly) affected by the way he was viewed by the ministry and most of his peers. It's always an extremely frustrating experience when you're telling the truth and the majority of people won't believe you.

I really do find Harry's yelling enjoyable. :)

message 11: by Mirza (new)

Mirza (mirzaarhasan) | 403 comments Maybe JKRowling potrayed Harry in that way deliberately ... Even though he has such a huge destiny hanging in front of him and the Wizarding world is constantly fascinated with him - he is after all a growing teen-ager, and he is very normal in throwing tantrums and feeling jealous and everything.

He had had a terrible childhood and is just a trouble-making teenager inside him. The whole world is obsessed with making him special and 'the one' and wishing him a horrible early deatrh, and he copes with everything in his own way.

message 12: by April (new)

April Poole (fangirlapril) I understand that he has every right to feel that way but he doesn't have to be so depressed or push away his friends or anything. After a while it just started to annoy me.

♫♫☺Allie☺♫♫ (alliwicious) I didn't like him in the 5th book. I know he couldn't help it. But, I was kinda scared of his thoughts.

message 14: by April (last edited Jun 25, 2010 12:58PM) (new)

April Poole (fangirlapril) Thats how I felt too...I just kind of wanted to shake him and say Harry look around you! You have awesome friends and a great life! You just have to learn to look at it in the right light!

♫♫☺Allie☺♫♫ (alliwicious) Agreed

message 16: by Laura (new)

Laura ahh i see now ya you have a point there harry was annoying in 5th it always seemed to put me on edge when he was like that i understand why but still...

message 17: by Mirza (new)

Mirza (mirzaarhasan) | 403 comments But he is a world wide hero, he is great at Quidditch and he gets to fight Voldemort every year at least once. What else could he wish for?

On the other hand, poor Ron had neve had anything in his life. It was nice for Dumbledore to make Ron the prefect.

I hated the part when harry wasn't made prefect! and then i felt bad that i wasn't happy for ron ahaha

message 19: by April (new)

April Poole (fangirlapril) Except that Harry constantly causes trouble and disobeys the rules. Ron sets a slightly better example than Harry would.

message 20: by Pandy (last edited Jun 26, 2010 04:23PM) (new)

Pandy Well, Harry and Ron are usually in it together. Harry is bolder and more impulsive, but Ron is more laid back. I don't think one is "better" than the other in this respect. The reason Dumbledore doesn't make Harry a prefect, as he himself says, is that he doesn't want to add to Harry's burdens. He knows Harry will have a difficult year without having to take care of a prefect's responsibilities. Also, it gives Ron an oppurtunity to shine for once, and is a nice thing to do as Mirza said.

It's true that Harry excels at Quidditch, is famous, and proves himself against Voldemort, but aside from the Quidditch part, fame is not what Harry truly wishes for. The Ministry in OotP tries to portray Harry as someone who loves being famous in order to discredit him as an "attention-seeking liar." Harry wishes that none of this had happened - he's so angry because the people can't see that he would much rather have his parents alive than be famous for surviving that which killed so many others. Harry wants to be the one to get rid of Voldemort, but getting to face him almost every year isn't something I imagine is a constant source of happiness for him. Ron does feel overshadowed by Harry and his brothers, which is why I agree it is nice to make him a prefect, butRon actually has what Harry craves the most. He has a large, comfortable, loving family. He's always been cared for and can call the Burrow home.

message 21: by Laura (new)

Laura i agree with panda but i think it would have been better if Dumbledore had explained to harry or had someone to explain to harry why ron was picked as prefect and not harry that would have been better

message 22: by Pandy (last edited Jun 26, 2010 07:22PM) (new)

Pandy Dumbledore does tell him at the very end. I know Harry is hurt when he's not picked, but I think that's healthy. It allows him to consider Ron and realize that he isn't any more suited to the position than Ron is. It also lets him know how Ron usually feels.

♫♫☺Allie☺♫♫ (alliwicious) Pandy no offence but you make some long posts! :0 *stnads in awe*

message 24: by Pandy (new)

Pandy So I've been told in another HP group. :)

message 25: by Mirza (new)

Mirza (mirzaarhasan) | 403 comments Ron was also made better in Quiddith later, and he got the girl too. He was definitely growing confidence in himself. Guess JKRowling was making up for creating Ron originally a 'laid bak' second-in-command of Harry.

message 26: by April (new)

April Poole (fangirlapril) Yeah but I think that Ron is a more complex character than people give him credit for. He's always in the shadow of Harry, or his siblings and his greatest wish is to be known for something of his own.

message 27: by Pandy (last edited Jun 27, 2010 12:12PM) (new)

Pandy I agree. JKR seems to have planned Ron's development, as she planned the other aspects of the books. I don't think she was "making up" for portraying Ron as laid back. She was just showing his growth as a character.

message 28: by April (new)

April Poole (fangirlapril) I agree completely.

message 29: by April (new)

April Poole (fangirlapril) Fine. You can have your opinions...and I can agree or not.
