Sarah | 13814 comments Yeah, my library system can't afford more than a couple of copies of anything across the whole system, so I spend a lot of time requesting books. I need to see about accessing the county system as well, since they have a better budget and a few of the books that I can't seem to get here.

message 52: by Lori (new)

Lori Good news! However late you've been returning books, you are far far better than our first president!

I just discovered a weird glitch with my library's updated electronic checkout system. If you borrow a "new release" DVD (which costs $2 to check out for 3 days) and opt to not pay the $2, the system doesn't register the DVD as being checked out. And since my local branch doesn't use scanners to check out material, it's almost as if you're stealing from the library.

Not to worry, I have returned the new release DVD...though not on time. My conscience is telling me to let someone at the library know about this flaw, considering the budget shortfall they're currently experiencing.

Phil | 11837 comments Hang on. You're supposed to take the books BACK??

Crap. My shelves are going to look so empty now!

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

Phil, you could always sell those books, and donate the proceeds to the library.

On second thought...uh...forget that.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments If you take them back, you can get some MORE! :)

Sarah | 13814 comments And if you don't, you have to hide your head in shame and move to another library system.

message 58: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 4 comments When I was in elementary school for some reason I hated returning library books--The last one I kept was "The Last Time I Wore A Dress" by Daphne Scholinski.. it was such a powerful story and I could never part with it. I guess I never thought to go out and buy the book..or any of the books before that.

Needless to say I've been avoiding that library for years and I'm pretty sure I'm wanted.. well, actually, I'm probably just banned from my old town's public library.

I've gotten better though, promise :)

message 59: by L.J. (new)

L.J. (ljsellers) | 14 comments I returned two books today on time, as usual, and added several to my hold list. I've been using the library a lot more lately and I love it. I also donate all my used books to the library for its annual book sale. Libraries are running on tight budgets these day. We all have to do our part.

Or wait until you get married and change your name and go get a new card.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments When I was younger, I was really bad about returning library books and would always get fine notices in the mail that I would hide.

Now I am pretty OCD about returning library stuff. I even have a designated "library bag" that even my 5-year-old daughter knows to put her library stuff in. We even got her her own card because we check out tons of stuff for her.

Anyway, I LOVE the library and use inter-library loan extensively. I'm always checking for new additions to their collections and putting reserves on them.

message 62: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I do really good about returning books on time, usually early. As soon as I'm finished they go back. And I have no excuse, the library is just a couple of blocks from home. My daughter on the other hand is horrible about it. Two weeks past the due date she says "oh yeah, those should have already been returned"

I've been trying to use the library alot as my bank account says "quit buying books!!"

message 63: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Hi Flora, I wish I lived that close to the library. I could/would go more often than I do now and I would get a lot more exercise.

If you can't resist buying books, you may want to check out BOOKSWIM.COM, it's like the NETFLIX of books. The difference is if you want to keep the book, you can and they'll caharge you the used copy price.

I rarely buy books except from library sales/thrift stores. Yeah, that means I have to wait my turn for popular books at the library but I have no shortage of reading material. What I'm short of is time to read :)

Thanks, I'll have to check that site out.

I, too, have no shortage of reading materials. I have unread books on my shelves that I keep saying I'm gonna get to. But I'm luckier than most, I get to read at work when its not busy :)

message 65: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yes, I have tons of books at home which I kind of take for granted because I figure they're not going anywhere.

I keep reserving books at the library, checking out the NEW BOOKS shelf, and pulling books off the shelving carts. I always take home more than I can possibly read, renew it, and then return it unread. Then the cycle starts again every time I visit the library. Sighhh.

I also spend so much time on these sites and adding books to my to-read list that I never have time to read because I'm on this site chatting and adding yet more books.

You are sooo lucky. Where do you work? When I worked at the bank, the rules varies. Some would let me read personal stuff during downtime. Others wouldn't even let me do homework.

I work at a small branch of a local bank, and generally I am the only one here. Which means if I want to read in my down time I can :) I try to stay off of here too, bc if I let myself I would be online all the time too and never getting any reading done.

message 67: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments So if you're the only one there, do you just eat at your desk/station/cubicle?

But it's so hard to stay off. I sometimes can manage to fight the urge. I used to go on youtube, craigslist, and twitter but I've cut way down on those since I discovered this site, BookArmy, and FilmCrave.

I don't have to stay for lunch. We close from 1 to 2 so I go home for lunch.

I'm on twitter and BookArmy as well, and also Facebook of course. Theres alot of sites that are blocked here at work, so far this one's not. But I'm expecting it anytime. Which is another reason I try to stay off it here at work, hoping not to draw attention to it lol

message 69: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments I wish I worked at the bank you do. You must live close by to be able to go home. I could walk to work when I worked downtown.

I would walk to work, work 1/2 day,& take the bus to the university for classes.

The only downside was that the time on the bus was cut down so I couldn't get as much reading done.

What are your handles on BookArmy & Twitter? I'm k1721m on BookArmy & Filmcrave. I'm kulmona on Twitter.

message 70: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yeah I know all about the blocked sites issue. I used share a cubicle with a guy that got fired when he was caught downloading porn. How is it that those sites were not blocked?!

Gotta go now.

message 71: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (asherly) I work at a library. I suppose I am good when it comes to returning. But since I am an employee I get a little more freedom when it comes to renewing items so that I may have them checked out longer.

Though I really like owning my books, so when people donate I sometimes take a few :) It's quite nice working at a library. Plenty of free materials.

message 72: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Hello Ashley: I LOVE the library. I get tons of books/mags/movies from there and use inter-library loan extensively. My reserve list is often maxed out.

You are lucky to be working there though I imagine shelving can be a drag. But, then again, it's a good way to discover/be reminded of books & movies. I'll bet you are first in line for recent issues of mags.

Actually, the library I work for will place preorders on new items making it so patrons can submit their holds and that can create a tremendous waiting line for everyone. So, most of the time, when I discover a new book, I usually have to wait (unless I'm always on the catalog searching for what's new). It's a race for many people! It's kinda funny how people think that since I work at a library I get first dibs. Not really lol! But it is a nice job even though I'm only part time. And shelving, believe it or not, is quite relaxing but it does lose its fun fast.

message 74: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yes, the library system I use places pre-orders too and I'm one of those people that checks often for what's new.

I guess it's a common assumption that people who work at the library, video rental store, GOODWILL, get first dibs.
I used to work at BLOCKBUSTER and you're right, it's not necessarily true. We would get free rentals but not from the New Releases.

But I bet you still get first dibs on the mags since most libraries don't let you put a hold on those. The most recent copies of PEOPLE are always gone.

When I go to the library, very often I take movies and books off the shelving carts to check out -- I bet I save my library's staff some work. They've seen me do that and they love it. :)

We cannot check out new mags actually xD

And yes, we love it when patrons take items off the shelving cart. It's one less thing for us to work on. :3

message 76: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yes, you can't check out the newest ones but when the latest issue is delivered, you can probably snag the one just before that.

I subscribe to a lot of mags because subscriptions(except
PEOPLE WEEKLY) are sooo cheap these days.

I always return library books and dvds on time, especially dvds because they have a $2/day late fee. One time I returned a movie on time and the next time I went to the library they told me I had a $10 late charge. I told them I had returned it on time and they called the branch and sure enough it was there on the shelf. But the librarian told me I still could have returned it 5 days late. She said the best she could do was cut my $10 fine to $5. She said, "You should have requested a return receipt" which I didn't even know existed. Now I always request the receipt because of library worker incompetence.

message 78: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i generally keep about a $3 fine balance around at all times. not intentionally but i do. mostly magazines i check out and don't get back in time as they have a shortened check out length understandably as they are a bit more time sensitive if they are recent issues. i pay my fines if they get about $3. actually i think they have a new policy that freezes your account if it gets above $4.

when i pay my fine i always tell whoever is taking it: "put that towards new carpet"

message 79: by Pat (new)

Pat (patb37) I am very careful about returning library books on time. Our library allows renewals on line, and sends reminder emails, so they make it easy to comply.

Our library is very small, and since it is housed in a historic building, they cannot enlarge it. I feel like keeping a book longer than the allotted loan period is being unfair to the other library patrons that may want to read the book.

message 80: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) even with my two day grace period, I always manage to have something that is a day or two late. It is embarrassing because I am in my library 2-3 times a week. I used to be so much more organized!

message 81: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments my daughter works at the library and she LOVES to be at the circulation desk when i check out and say "mr. sprinkle, you have a $3.27 fine"

message 83: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments ms. petra: in more ways than one. my wife is/was a singer and my daughter fortunately got all those genes. here is a short clip of my daughter singing last week. i am far more proud of who she is than what she can do

message 84: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yup, i do that.

message 85: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) you must be so proud of her! It is a wonderful gift to be able to sing. My daughter always says "mom, child abuse!" when I sing. But I do it anyway. I also watched the victory video... it made me tear up. You have a very lovely family.

message 86: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Our library here in Tampa:

. Generous grace period of 7 days which I often take advantage of. Not so good if you're on hold for something because it takes longer to get it.

. Magazines can be checked out for 3 weeks

. Limit of 2 renewals unless on hold for someone else. If there is a hold, then can't renew at all.

. Can only use outside book drops when library is closed. If you return items in book drop, they will be treated as returned on the last day library was open

Between our 3 cards, I often have 50-75 items checked out. I usually have all 3 cards in my purse and do most of the reserve pick-ups. Hubby does the returns. So far, I've never had a fine on any card since we moved here about a year ago. I'm pretty diligent about it because library fines are one of hubby's pet peeves.I visit the library about once a week and do all my reserves/renewals online.

message 87: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (bbytigerlily) I currently have a four-year-old $29 fine on my library card...I keep thinking about paying it off, but I always find something better to use my money for

For how long were you parked? That's really weird. I bet they stake out that space.

Some things don't change much from country to country. Parking police are obviously one of them. Not that I have ever had a parking fine.

Pat (patb37) I wish the library was as diligent about marking books returned as I am about returning them. Today, for the second time this summer, I had to go to the library and have them get the book off the shelf and check it in.

I don't like getting an overdue notice for a book that was returned two weeks ago, but it least it alerts me to the fact that there is a problem.
