Thanks for the warm welcome. My only regret is not having joined the group sooner! Now I just need to enhance my speed reading skills or figure out how to retire early so I can read more!
Good day to you all. I am a retired Captain, USN, and graduate of the US Naval Academy; I served in destroyers and cruisers, with one frigate tour, My last at-sea tour was Commanding Officer, USS Dewey (DDG 45). I was a Major in HS JROTC. My father was a Colonel, US Army, serving in the Connecticut and US National Guard in the (mounted, horse) Cavalry, Coastal Artillery (AA), the Quartermaster and finally the Transportation Corps. I live in Alexandria, VA, with my wife Mary Ruth and near my two sons and 7 grandchildren.
Richard - did you by chance ever rub elbows with a Mark Scovill (uncle of mine that served in USN for 30 years)?
Theresa wrote: "Richard - did you by chance ever rub elbows with a Mark Scovill (uncle of mine that served in USN for 30 years)?" No, ma'am, not that I recall. We are divided by coast (E & W), by warfare specialty (surface, sub, air) and other groupings. We also wee quite numerous back when i served.

Thanks Richard. Just thought I'd ask. My uncle is lovingly called the traitor in our family, as my grandfather, dad, and other uncle were all career Army officers. I've just recently joined this group, but am already learning a lot from these fine folks!

Please jump right in. I retired from the U.S. Navy in 1995.
Hi all, thanks for having me in the World War 2 group. My husband and I were part of the post war generation, brought up on family stories, movies and experiences. My first novel, 'His Most Italian City' published by Penmore Press 2019, was written to record my mother's family history in what was then Fascist Italy. The theme of my second, 'Through Forests and Mountains', to be published this month, is the invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941 and the very beginnings of the Partisan movement, with a particular emphasis on the role of women. I'll update you on that release when it happens. The sequel 'Shadower' is about the Partisan Navy - 2022, hopefully. https://www.facebook.com/margaretwalk...

Hi all - I’m Scott Duncan, a Professor of Pediatrics and Division Chief of Neonatal Medicine at the University of Louisville in KY. I’m originally from Erlanger, KY, across the River from Cincinnati. I’m an amateur genealogist (nobody famous in my family!). I first got interested in history reading Stephen Ambrose, while living in South-Central Mississippi, some 20+ years ago. I’m currently reading Max Hastings “Inferno” and have Ian Toll’s second and third volume on the war in the Pacific on deck. I’ve also got Churchill’s six volume history and McInnis’ six volume “The War” waiting in the wings! This is my first Goodreads group - I’m looking forward to interacting with everyone! Stay safe - SDD
