Lawrence Myers | 83 comments Hi, I'm Larry, 64 and a longtime student of the Second World War. I think I've touched upon just about every aspect of the subject over some 50+ years, but am by no means an expert. My main area of interest by far is the naval war in the Pacific. if there are any other enthusiasts out there, I would be glad to hear from you. Thanks.

Welcome to the group, Lawrence. Lots of great books on the Pacific naval war out there from great authors: James Hornfischer, Ian Toll, Jeffrey Cox, John Lundstrom, Craig Symonds, and of course, Samuel Eliot Morison. I've always been a bit partial to the submarine war myself.

I look forward to learning from everyone and discussing this historical period with everyone as well.

Welcome to the group, Grace.

A book I read a few years ago about Japan during the war was really good and could help if you haven't used it already:

Japan at War An Oral History by Haruko Taya Cook Japan at War: An Oral History

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19982 comments I also have a copy of that book but at this stage still unread.

Thanks Marc! I will look into it! I've had trouble finding scholarly sources about the war in the Japanese perspective because of the historical censorship in Japan. This book will definitely help a lot!

Hi Grace, welcome to the group. I just finished a book which might have some information related to your focus area:

Blossoms in the Wind Human Legacies of the Kamikaze by M.G. Sheftall Blossoms in the Wind: Human Legacies of the Kamikaze by M.G. Sheftall

The book was very good and he had a lot of references and places to go for further information at the back of the book.

Ciji Ware | 3 comments Hello! My name is Ciji Ware, the author of 12 novels and 2 nonfiction, my latest being LANDING BY MOONLIGHT - a WW II novel based on the lives of American women secret agents parachuted behind enemy lines in France to fight the Nazis. I'm now doing research for Book 2 in this "Spy Sisters" series, set between 1941-45 in the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps featuring a composite character based on a few female secret agents operating in that region. Has anyone encountered any NON-fiction works on the subject of WW II in the Alps--the area known a the Haute Savoie, with the city of Annecy and the lake of the same name being central to the story. All suggestionsof titles or background info are very welcomed. Thanks! All best and happy reading! Ciji

Lilli Gilliam Hi. I'm new here. What do I do? Also do we discuss the Holocaust??

message 4275: by Marc (new)

Marc | 1746 comments Lilli's Reads wrote: "Hi. I'm new here. What do I do? Also do we discuss the Holocaust??"

Hello Lilli. Yes, we do discuss the Holocaust--there's a thread just for such discussion(s).

As for "what do you do", well, that's really up to you. Some people just lurk in the shadows, reading the various comments and threads but never saying anything. Others are more active and express their opinions on various World War II-related topics. I have to warn you ahead of time: if you are looking for a book on a particular topic and ask for recommendations, you might get more than you can handle! The members of this group LOVE to recommend books to others, so make sure someone else is in charge of your credit cards going forward!
