Welcome to the group, Ana! I think you're going to need more than one new bookshelf!!

Hi Ana and welcome to our little group, I am sure you will find a few books and authors of interest :)

New to the group, but not new to World War II history! Just here to find more books to read & possibly engage in some discussion. My World War II interests are typically focused on the European Campaign, the OSS, the USS Franklin (my grandfather was a survivor) as well as the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific. I used to work at a World War II Museum and volunteer (occasionally) at the USS Silversides Museum so I’m always looking out for interesting tidbits.
I’m a veteran myself (Iraq & Afghanistan, Army) and studied a bit of history in undergrad. I look forward to seeing what everyone here is up to!

Hi Rob and a warm welcome to the group. With your range of interests I am sure you will fit right in here :)

My name is Nikolett or Niki, if you prefer the short version. :) I'm 28 years old and from Hungary. I'm into history and WW2 since I was 14 years old. My first book that I read was about Hitlerjugend. I'm trying my best in english but please let me know if I make mistakes.*.* At first, I didn't like it when people in my life believed that I'm a nationalist but I don't care what they believe now. I just love to read about world war two, that's all. :) I love rock and metal music, the smell and taste of vanilla, plush animals and all colors.

Hi and a warm welcome to the group, I am sure you will find a few things of interest here and if you need any assistance don't hesitate to ask.

Good selection here Sean. English movies 15, 18, 38 I particularly loved, but Sound of Music...well

My list of WWII English Language Movies: ..."
Yea... on Sound of Music... When I first made the list, it was pure war movies (if you know what I mean). Then some romance stuff snuck in, then some state-side-action-while-war-going-on, etc. Definitely need to taylor this list to your specific taste. Sound of Music is a great film, but if I'm in the mood for a war movie tonight, I'm NOT thinking Sound of Music :)
Have you used the IMDB site before? At top of the list, do a "Sort By" and pick "IMDB Rating" to get the best to the top. Now, top rated will yield movies with scores closer to 10.0, but what if only a few people voted? Maybe try a "Sort By" and pick "Popularity".
Or, after the list name "WWII English-Language Movies" there are three vertical dots. "Export" the list to an excel file, and sort the list however you like.
Enjoy.

I am the daughter of a WWII veteran (P-38 pilot). I belong to two local WWII veterans groups, am devouring WWII books, visited Normandy last year and the WWII museum in New Orleans earlier this year, and have written two books about WWII and am currently reading Churchill's My Early Life
And I am most excited about meeting WWII veterans, compiling a slide show of them (titled 23 Vets and Me) on my Facebook page. Looking forward to connecting with those of like mind.

Welcome aboard, Rona. We can definitely recommend more books for you to devour!

Welcome, Rona. Please just pitch in.

Fabulous. Right now, as I am writing a novel with the viewpoint of a B-17 crew chief, I'd love to find anything written from that point of view.

Thank you. Just lobbed a soft ball over the plate.

Going to hear Alex Kerhsaw talk this Thursday in Atlanta. Anyone recommend the best of his books?

"The Bedford Boys" is a good second choice.

I prefer these two:

My famyily liblrary started with my grandphader, who was bomber pilot and navigator that has seen his freiend burned from crush on jet planes.
For him the secend world war started when he was 16 years old, then he has to work phisicly on the roads and so with Arbeitsbuch.
Then, when he has fallen ill (due to major fever) he want to recover to his aunt and then, red army came. When they saw him in German panties, they wanted to shoot him, yet because he knew Russian well he defended himself so well that they took him to piloting academy in Orenburg, the same one that Yuri Gagarin, first man in space, has been attending later.
His father my grand-grandfather was send to the same city, Orenburg by Car Russia and he walked all the way back to Poland, without saying goodbye.
And another grand-grandfather of mine has lived to 102 years of age, we had lived in Grobnik, close to Czech Republic borderline.
He has these German winter boots that was improvement from Russian winter boots design. And my father, as a young man thought there are Russian and didn't took care of them, later learning from the mistake, but bit to late.

When I have met him I was twelve and he gave me 88 mm artillery shell.
Five generations back I have had Heir of manor house with surname Jaxa-Dąbrowski, and Dąbrowski has been fighting in Italy and his best friend and subordinate Wybicki wrote polish anthem, which back then was military song.
And final through pairends DNA test we have found out that both parents are in 1/3 balts, witch means Lithuania and Prussia (these has fought as Teutonic knights vs last pagans in Europe.
Then DNA map shows all of Czechia ( in detailed dots) and migration to USA by Poles and Czechs ancestors in 19th centaur to work in mines and factorys.
Also there was time when Czech Aristocracy was defeated and replaced by German, and these who has survived, fled to Poland, to area around City of Torun, the one know Nicolaus Copernicus. Where I still have family (though that's the only one I have contact with, on my fathers side).
Obviously its it's more then that, as there is Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth (that covers Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Western Ukraine and a lot of Royal Prussia[as well as Hungary in earlier times]) Austrian Commonwealth, that is of Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romanian Transylvania and Galicia that was part of Poland while there was Partition of Poland, mind that galicia was the only polish region at that time that Poles could have jobs in garment office.
And my DNA is really in all of these regions of Europe.
As I have yet plenty to read of my library I might miss some of group reading as I can't really buy new books saving for new house that I have to build. Working in factory with my younger brother. In UK, where I live with all my family members, myself for last 12 years.

Welcome to the group, I've been 'away' for a while myself, looking forward to re-engaging.
Regards, Mac

Hi Aussie Rick! Yeah, I've been away- kids, work, writing, lifeboat crew, etc. Just looking about the WWII site again and so many good topics and books to look up. And then I saw Sean's movie lists! I need a man-cave!

Hey Mac, it's good to see you around again. I hope your writing is going well.

Hi Elliot! Still typing away, tinkering with a murder mystery set around a lifeboat crew for book three- so a slight departure from WWI!

Sean, Just stumbled over a WWI film coming out, I think next month:
Sam Mendes' World War One epic 1917 has been met by rave reviews from critics who say there's no doubt the film will storm next year's Oscars race.
1917 was the last of this year's Oscars contenders to be screened over the weekend - and critics say it rivals beloved wartime films such as Saving Private Ryan, All Quiet on the Western Front and Gone with the Wind.
The film, based in part on an account told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather Alfred Mendes, a Great War message carrier, is set at the height of the conflict in the spring of 1917, just as the US entered the war.
It follows two British corporals, Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay) who are sent on a suicide mission to warn comrades about a looming ambush by the Germans.

Welcome, Siddharth. Please do not be shy about pitching in.
