I’m David, and I’m just about finishing off a master’s degree with a thesis on British military chaplaincy in the Far Eastern theatre between 1942 and 1945. I’ve always had an interest in military history, particularly WW2, and am looking forward to reading some new stuff as part of this group!

Welcome, David. Please pitch in.
I have been reading Sir Archibald Wavell's biography of Edmund Allenby, Allenby: A Study in Greatness. He has twice brought into the book a chaplain, Father Knapp of the Carmelite Order. Knapp was ordered to the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons when they were under Allenby's command in the Transvaal. It was a regiment raised among Protestant elements of Northern Ireland and originally formed to fight King James. The appointment of an RC chaplain caused concern within the regiment. Allenby took the chaplain into his own mess. He later said of Father Knapp: "Quite the best specimen of Army Chaplain I've ever met." Knapp earned an MC in France and was KIA with the Irish Guards in 1917.
