Steve | 54 comments New to the group and getting started on WWII books. Started with the typical heavy hitters and starting to get into some of the "off the beaten path" books.

Books read so far this year:
Beevor (Fall of Berlin and Second World War), Toll (Conquering Tide and Pacific Crucible), Atkinson (All three in Trilogy), Holland (War in the West), Rhodes (Making of the Atomic Bomb), Snyder (Bloodlands), Hastings (Inferno), Hornfischer (Neptune and Fleet at Flood Tide), Ambrose (Citizen Soldiers), Shirer (Rise and Fall).

Currently reading:
Werth (Russia at War), Snyder (Black Earth)

Any recommendations on where to go from here would be much appreciated.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Hi Steve and welcome to the group. Great list of books that you have completed so far, some of my favourite authors mentioned.

You could read more of Holland, Beevor and Hastings as they have quite a few more books covering WW2 subjects. Also you could look at these titles:

Snow and Steel The Battle of the Bulge, 1944-45 by Peter Caddick-Adams Snow and Steel: The Battle of the Bulge, 1944-45 by Peter Caddick-Adams

The German War A Nation Under Arms by Nicholas Stargardt The German War: A Nation Under Arms by Nicholas Stargardt

In Deadly Combat A German Soldier's Memoir of the Eastern Front by Gottlob Herbert Bidermann In Deadly Combat: A German Soldier's Memoir of the Eastern Front by Gottlob Herbert Bidermann

Steve | 54 comments Thanks. "The German War" is on my to be read list and I will take a look at the other two as well.

My pleasure, do you have any particular area of interest in WW2 that we can help with recommendations/suggestions?

Mike | 3595 comments Welcome to the group Steve. That is some quality reading you have accomplished this year. Nice to have you here. One to read that will match the quality of your books is:

The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour by James D. Hornfischer The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour

Steve | 54 comments Well. I started reading after learning of my grandfather's brother who was killed in April 1945 near essen and is buried in Margraten in Holland. My grandfather is still alive and got me interested with many conversations. He was in the navy in 45-47 and his older brother survived the entire war serving on subs. He was on one that just happened to be out on Pearl Harbor day. So, honestly, all of it due to the family being so spread out during that time and in multiple branches of service. Its very hard to nail down info on each individual, but to learn about the entire setting is important.

Welcome to the group, Steve. Fine list of books you've read so far this year and don't worry, we can definitely point you in the direction of "off the beaten path"!

Some important family history there Steve and like you said its good to read to place the events in their entirety.

message 3910: by Steve (new)

Steve | 54 comments Yes, for sure. I am liking the way Snyder tells more of the "why" and what the repercussions were rather than just the what happened some of the other authors fall into.

message 3917: by Mark (new)

Mark Smith (cheval73) Thanks for allowing me to join. It's great to find a group focused on WWII (btw ~ I searched for "WWI"I and nothing came up until I wrote World War Two). I am constantly researching the wars America has been in during my lifetime. Born in 1942, I have written two historical fiction novels about WWII in the Pacific and The Battle of the Atlantic.

Scott Head Greetings, I've been interested in history since I could read, and find my particular area of interest these days in 1900-1943. Glad to be here. I've also been involved in scale modeling and vintage firearms, which each are areas in which I can enjoy history. Glad to be here.

message 3931: by Scott (new)

Scott Head Thanks for the warm welcome. Currently reading some Alan Furst novels, exceptional look at WWII from a very well-researched historical author, mostly spy stuff, but superb. WIll soon be reading Cockleshell Heroes about the Bordeau Harbor canoe raid.

message 3932: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Alan Furst fan myself! Netflix has BBC's "Spies of Warsaw." Recomended.

message 3933: by andruska (new)

andruska Hello everyone! I'm new to this group (and have been here in goodreads for just a month), I mostly read historical non-fiction books, having more interest in military history, if you have any recommendation I would like to know. Also, this september I will start studying History at university. Hope you all are having a great summer!
Sorry if I have a bad English, I'm from Spain

Colin Heaton (colin1962) | 2011 comments Let us know what genre of military history interests you the most. Ironically we may be looking for a Spanish translator for a few of my books for that market. I have one book in French, Finnish, Polish, and another in Danish.

Mike | 3595 comments Hi Billy, glad you found the group. Be careful, we might divert some of your funds from grandkid presents to must-have books.

message 3947: by Billy (new)

Billy Leon | 15 comments My two newest grandsons were born just over two weeks ago. My love for history is not shared by their father. But between feedings and diaper changes I impart on them the stories of the war. I can only hope that the boys first words are "Spitfire" since my chats with them have been based on the Battle of Britain.

message 3948: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Welcome to all our new members. The group is a great place to chat WWII (and WWI) books and please feel free to pitch in and post too.

message 3949: by Numidica (new)

Numidica | 11 comments Hi, new member here. My father and two uncles were WWII Army officers. I have many stories from my dad in particular, who was on his second marriage when I was born, hence my relatively young age, as compared to others whose fathers were WWII vets. I have read extensively about the War, and look forward to discussions on this forum.

message 3950: by Marc (new)

Marc | 1748 comments Welcome to the group, Numidica. Lots of good discussions going one around here, so don't hesitate to join in. If you ever need/want a recommendation for a book about a certain topic, you will probably get at least half a dozen.
