Phyllis (phyllisrauch) | 10 comments HI, I am the translator and co-author of my late husband, Georg Rauch's WWII memoir. Our first, self published edition came out in 2006 and was titled the Jew with the Iron Cross. In 2015 the book was picked up by Farrar, Strous and Giroux. Next to no changes were made, except for the title, Unlikely Warrior, A Jew in Hitler's Army. Recently, for the first time, I read the scores of 5 star reviews on our book's Good Reads page. I've also received many emails from enthusiastic readers including librarians, teachers, ph.d candidates, as well as teen-agers. My editor recently told me that close to 80,000 books have been sold (hard back, paper back, audio, and Scholastic and ebooks. Since Georg wrote the book in German and I translated it in 1984, it took me a little over 30 years to get the major audience I had dreamed of. But from the beginning I got the cold shoulder from any groups that specialized in reading WWII books. Admittedly this is an unusual take - a partly Jewish teen, who has to fight in Hitler's war, is sent to Russian and becomes a POW of the Russians. But according to the reviews I read, many have found all these great reasons for reading our book - because it isn't the same old same old. Most Americans think all Germans were Nazis. Or that anyone with an ounce of Jewish blood was shipped to the death camps. Now, over 10 years later, and after our book's having. considerable success, can you please tell me why WWII buffs evidently are still avoiding this book? I am mostly curious. Do you only want to read about American soldiers and their experiences? I'd love to know the reason - (tho I don't need you anymore). P. Rauch. ps Georg died in Nov. 2006

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments It sounds like a very interesting book Phyllis and I am sure there would be a number of group members here who would find it a fascinating account.

I'm sorry you feel that way Phyllis. Perhaps, like me, many are unfamiliar with the title. I have a decent library on WWII and have not heard of the book until I read about it today. Rest assured now that we are aware of it, the book will get more attention from the members here.

Phyllis (phyllisrauch) | 10 comments Thanks Rick, and please excuse my last comment. I'm not the youngest anymore, and sometimes I get tired. Hoping to hear from WWII fans who do read our book in the future. Phyllis

message 3559: by Colin (new)

Colin Heaton (colin1962) | 2011 comments The main problem is that too many people think they know history, live with the post war propaganda, and are intellectually lazy and refuse to entertain "facts" that disturb their preconceived notions.

Thanks for the recommendations. Both books look deep and wide. The second book about stories of survivors is at my top list now!

Thanks Marc for recommending such a deep and thought provoking read!
It looks heavy with details and strategies; will be my next read for sure.

Haaze | 56 comments Hi everyone! I'm new here!
I gravitated towards the group as you had "The Russian Revolution: A New History by Sean McMeekin" listed on the front page. It immediately appealed to me as a book I would like to read with the group. Besides, I have always been interested in the two world wars. However, mostly from a political as well as social history perspective rather than a military one. I hope that all kinds of perspectives abound in the group. I tend to read much more within the realm of literature, but hope that I will find plenty of rewarding books in the world of the two wars. I have much to learn from you all in these matters.

message 3565: by Haaze (new)

Haaze | 56 comments Thank you Happy! Do most of the books read here in this group fluctuate between the Great War and WWII or is the main focus on the latter?

message 3566: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2281 comments The main focus is definitely WW II, but we've got threads covering almost any war in the 20th Century.

J.T. Winter (jtwinter) | 2 comments Hi, Everyone!

I'm JT and love reading thrillers and military fiction. One of my first WWII reads was Horrido and one of my favorite WWII reads is The Caine Mutiny. I also love Cold War reads and modern, not too sci-fi-ey military/war reads. I look forward to being a member of the community as I'm also an author who wants to learn about and from my fellow military readers. I recently published The King of Raqqa which is more along those modern lines.

That was the fourth Bantam War Book I bought, way back in around 1979 or 1980. Really loved it, and ended up grabbing the hardbound version several years later:

message 3591: by Joaniepony (new)

Joaniepony Thanks for the welcome ,Aussie Rick. You read the books and I'll pick your brains. For years I heard WWI was caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand~~then I thought that's too easy of an explanation. The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914: Margaret MacMillan is a good read from a feminine standpoint . Guys get all tangled up in individual Battles .

I think I posted on the wrong war~ I don't believe any war just ends~~

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 192 comments Hi Joanie
I think I know you from the Amazon Discussion Groups. If Aussie will allow a little more about WW I Books and since you mentioned the Woman's View
Two classics in the field are by Barbara Tuchman Barbara Tuchman ] and her two books
The Guns of August/The Proud Tower by Barbara W. Tuchman in one cover this edition

And not exactly about WWI but this combines a woman's words and the view from the Balkans and the run up to WW II - kinda in line with your: "I don't believe any war just ends"
Black Lamb and Grey Falcon by Rebecca West
