I've visited the USS Midway Museum twice--it's well worth the trip!

Welcome, Scott. When I was in the USN in Japan (1980-82), USS MIDWAY (CV-41) was homeported in Yokosuka. I've been aboard several times, but never underway.

Welcome Scott you will bring much to our group.

Jon

Welcome to the group - there should be something or someone here who can stear you in the right direction:)

Welcome, Jon. Here's one --

If you are interested in a book that covers the whole period right up to the end of 1945, this is one.

There is a series of 5 books published by the Columbia University Press that takes a more scholarly look at the war called Japan's Road to the Pacific War. The first two of which are on the Sino-Japanese War.
Japan Erupts: The London Naval Conference and the Manchurian Incident, 1928-1932, China Quagmire.
One battle that is extensively covered in Chinese literature is found in this book:

Jon welcome aboard...there are a lot of people here that give the best recommendations.

I'm a graduate student at Clarion University studying library science. I'm surveying members of Goodreads about what kinds of involvement they would like their local libraries to have with Goodreads. Aussie Rick kindly gave me permission to share my survey with the group.
You can find my survey here:
Goodreads Users & Their Local Libraries
Unfortunately, I am unable to have people under the age of 18 take my survey. There are special regulations for including minors in research that would made it too difficult to include them in this study. Sorry!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and take the survey!

Paul, welcome to the Group, you will find some excellent referrals to great books...my reading list gets longer and longer.

Just joined the group and thought I give a brief into. I hail from NY Sate and just got back into reading regularly about two years ago and I found that I miss so much & so many good books. I enjoy all genre and ww2 is included; both fiction and non-fiction. My next years reading challenge will be more than just how many books I plan to read; it will include all genre. With that said I will be choosing one from ww2 fiction depending on many factors, I'm leaning towards eye of the needle, dirty dozen, or Von Ryan 's Express...Unless I can find The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill, which is where I would like to start.

I think you should be able to find a few books to read in the various threads. I look forward to reading your comments!

I'm Rob from Oak Park IL. My grandfather was in WWII. North Africa 1942-43. He told me some stories but not nearly enough. My son, now 9, is very interested in WWII for some reason (not from me). Anyway, I have picked up an interest in reading about it.
Look forward to discussion....

Welcome Rob, you've come to a great group that have many great references to offer.

I think we'll all be very interested to know what he would write in the "Book that started it all" thread.

Welcome, Gregg. Please feel free to pitch in.

I have a great interest in World War 2 poetry, and run a related blog

Other World War 2 subjects I've looked into recently include the Crete campaign, Occupied Netherlands, Conscientious Objection, the Arctic Convoys. In this new year hope to organise some time to look at The Ukraine during World War 2.

Welcome, Michael. Let me recommend a book on the Occupied Netherlands which I found fascinating:
