THE WORLD WAR TWO GROUP discussion
Introduction to the WW2 Site - Please Say Hi
Welcome aboard, Igor! Feel free to ask about any topic you'd like book recommendations for, but be warned: you may get way more recommendations than you can handle!
Pleased to have you in the group Jason, I hope you find a few things of interest here and I look forward to discussing some great books and authors with you.
HiI've just joined and thought I would drop by to introduce myself. Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks was the book I read that sparked my interest with this subject and it still remains my favourite book!.
I have eclectic reading tastes I must admit, but I've suddenly returned to this genre with a bang and I'm really enjoying finding new authors, books and joining groups of like minded people.
I am a fan of War fiction/historical drama fiction of this era but I'm happy to expand my knowledge and read factual too!.
To give you an idea of the books I like I have just finished and really enjoyed 'The Buffer Girls'- Margaret Dickinson and I'm now reading The View From The Corner Shop- Kathleen Hey.
I'm looking forward to chatting to you all & reading along with the monthly challenges. Please feel free to add me as a friend on here also. Enjoy your weekend guys and happy reading!.x
Hi Kelly and a warm welcome to the group, I am sure that you will find a few good books and authors here to keep you interested.
Thank you Aussie Rick. Yes hopefully I will despite the fact I already have a glorious WW2 " To Be Read" mountain!
Kelly wrote: "Thank you Aussie Rick. Yes hopefully I will despite the fact I already have a glorious WW2 " To Be Read" mountain!"Aaah, well welcome to the club, membership requires a massive pile of "to be read" books :)
I've passed the initiation ceremony with flying colours on that than!. I'm almost solely funding my local library with reservation fees!

Welcome Kelly...this is a great group and know you will find it worthy of your time, and is a real valuable resourch on books which are worthy of your 'to read' list
Hello, My Name is Layla and I have always had an interest in WW2 since I was at school. I read WW2 fiction as well as WW2 factual books, that's is pretty much all I read, and always have done.
Very pleased to be in this group as I love to see different books that I might love to read and this group will be a brilliant help.
I really developed an interest in the Children of WW2 and what they went through during the War years with Evacuations. This subject when I was very first reading the WW2 books was very hard to find and at the time I could only find about 2 good books on the subject. Now many more are being written and have been wrote.
I also read a lot about Colditz as I love castles and Colditz has always held an interest for me.
I have a best friend who I met on line 8 years ago and I am trying to get him on to goodreads and he would love this group too.
The other day I was telling him something about Colditz, and he said he had never heard of it.
I look forward to being active in this group.

Kelly there are some great books from the allied prisoners' side and it is worth also checking this one out too:
Colditz: The German Story by Reinhold Eggers
I just joined the group a few minutes ago and wanted to say hi to everyone. I love reading just about anything I can get my hands on, and lately, I have been trying to find good non-fiction books on WWI and WWII, especially on the roles and experiences of women during the wars, both on the home front and in the military, as nurses, pilots, resistance fighters etc. I figured if anyone would know of good titles, it would be some of the people in this group.
Mary wrote: "I just joined the group a few minutes ago and wanted to say hi to everyone. It is based on a diary of a journalist living in Berlin as the war was ending and the Russians rolled in.

Welcome Mary.
Douglas MacArthur was an extraordinarily intelligent individual, but, in my opinion was as narcissistic as he could have possibly been. You either loved him or hated him. Manray, you got me started.
Robert wrote: "Manray9 wrote: "Mary wrote: "I just joined the group a few minutes ago and wanted to say hi to everyone. I love reading just about anything I can get my hands on, and lately, I have been trying to ..."Robert: I just read Bernie Catanzaro's With the 41st Division in the Southwest Pacific: A Foot Soldier's Story. He and his buddies were skeptical of Dugout Doug too.
I am currently reading this Colditz: The Definitive History: The Untold Story of World War II's Great Escapes Picked it up at free book table last year and forgot I had it until I was going through a box of books yesterday and came across it.
Rose wrote: "Mary wrote: "I just joined the group a few minutes ago and wanted to say hi to everyone. I love reading just about anything I can get my hands on, and lately, I have been trying to find good non-fi..."I will add that one to my list Rose. Thanks :)
I can see already that after joining this group I am either going to need to renew my library card or spend half of my paychecks on new books! Thank you all for the recommendations!
Robert wrote: "Manray9 wrote: "Mary wrote: "I just joined the group a few minutes ago and wanted to say hi to everyone. I love reading just about anything I can get my hands on, and lately, I have been trying to ..."I knew Gens. Curtis E Lemay and Matthew Ridgeway,
both of whom knew MacArthur well, and they were not fans.
Mary wrote: "I just joined the group a few minutes ago and wanted to say hi to everyone. I love reading just about anything I can get my hands on, and lately, I have been trying to find good non-fiction books o..."It's a while since I read it but The Past is Myself by Christabel Bielenberg is a thoughtful, thought-provoking narrative by a British woman who married and lived in Germany throughout WW2.
Manray9 wrote: "Robert wrote: "Manray9 wrote: "Mary wrote: "I just joined the group a few minutes ago and wanted to say hi to everyone. Without looking it up, I don't know who MacArthur's direct subordinates were. If "Dugout Doug" (as y0u say Manray) had had Ike's job, we would never have heard of Patton and Bradley.
I haven't added my welcome to Mary and Layla yet, soWelcome, Welcome!!!
Enjoy purusing the various threads and be prepared to see you TBR lists grow exponentially :D
