Talking of Point du Hoc, have you read this book by Patrick O'Donnell:

The author of that book is a member of the group as well Paul so I am sure he will be happy to hear you are going to check it out :)

I'm Paul and have been interested in WWII history since I was a kid. I now have the good fortune to be living in France, so I was able to spend 2 weeks in Normandy a few years ago, com..."
Welcome aboard Paul, this is one great group, with lot of good discussions and book recommendations.

So you can't go far wrong with this book (the first of two) It is a definitive work on the U-boat war, and as one person in the group puts it, he dang near keeps count of the torpedoes fired. Very heavy duty.

Hi, everyone. My name is Rachael and I have just joined the group. My favorite historical subject/topic in history is on World War II and in this category, my favorite subject is on Nazi Germany. It is very exciting to begin to be a part of a group like this that I and so many others share a great interest in. I like to write historical fiction about this area more than any other. But in general, I like to write about things in history that usually are not very well known, regardless of what it is about. I am a history major and want to be a historian and a writer, too. Those two worlds sure do go good together (LOL)! As someone interested in being a historian someday, I strongly believe that when it comes to history and the world that we live in now, that you cannot know where you are going until you know where you have been. Also, I feel that those who forget the past, are condemned to repeat it. I am very excited to hear about any books that are mentioned about World War II, fiction or nonfiction, to read. I look forward to interacting with you all and let's talk World War II!

Let me be the first to welcome you - Welcome, Welcome
You should be able to find something that tickles your fancy in the various threads. Please feel free to add your thoughts and insights, we don't bite :)

There were British troops in Les Mans as in June 1940 the HQ of the southern part of the British Expeditionary Force was based at Chateau de la Blanchardiere, Le Mans. There is a small British war cemetery in the town, which I have visited.
After the Dunkirk evacuations many British troops remained in France. Notably 51st Highland Division and a force under Karslake's command called Beauman Force (or Division). 51st Division who at the time of Dunkirk were under French command eventually left France via St. Valery. It wasn't until early/mid-August that the last British soldiers were evacuated from France. These events feature in the formal British official histories and a good general history book on this part of the campaign is:

I did a quick search and thought you'd like to see this photo taken at Le Mans: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/ite...
I hope this is a help.

Welcome, Lee. I am a retired naval officer too. Admiral Bulkeley was still the head of the INSURV Board when I served aboard USS DEYO (DD-989) in Charleston. He was viewed with awe by all aboard.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here!
