'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments Hi Paul and welcome to the group, how lucky to be living in France and surrounded by so much European history, very envious! I also loved watching "Combat" as a kid and recently purchased the series on DVD for my dad.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments So many places to see eh and not all WW2 history, from the Romans onwards! At one stage (many years ago) I considered applying for a position to manage maintenance on Australian WW1 cemetery's in France.

Talking of Point du Hoc, have you read this book by Patrick O'Donnell:

Dog Company The Boys of Pointe du Hoc--the Rangers Who Accomplished D-Day's Toughest Mission and Led the Way across Europe by Patrick K. O'Donnell by Patrick K. O'Donnell

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments We have quite a number in the Commonwealth War Graves scattered thought France and Belgium along the Western Front of the Great War, mainly around the Somme and Passchendaele areas.

The author of that book is a member of the group as well Paul so I am sure he will be happy to hear you are going to check it out :)

Hitler's U-Boat War The Hunters, 1939-1942 by Clay Blair Jr.

So you can't go far wrong with this book (the first of two) It is a definitive work on the U-boat war, and as one person in the group puts it, he dang near keeps count of the torpedoes fired. Very heavy duty.

Hi, everyone. My name is Rachael and I have just joined the group. My favorite historical subject/topic in history is on World War II and in this category, my favorite subject is on Nazi Germany. It is very exciting to begin to be a part of a group like this that I and so many others share a great interest in. I like to write historical fiction about this area more than any other. But in general, I like to write about things in history that usually are not very well known, regardless of what it is about. I am a history major and want to be a historian and a writer, too. Those two worlds sure do go good together (LOL)! As someone interested in being a historian someday, I strongly believe that when it comes to history and the world that we live in now, that you cannot know where you are going until you know where you have been. Also, I feel that those who forget the past, are condemned to repeat it. I am very excited to hear about any books that are mentioned about World War II, fiction or nonfiction, to read. I look forward to interacting with you all and let's talk World War II!

Colin Heaton (colin1962) | 2011 comments I was in Normandy a few times, and I was looking at many grave sites. My grandfather had been buried in France until his remains were returned in 1952. I was stunned at all the cemeteries and graves, so out of curiosity I asked a local man where the French graves were. he said that he was not aware of any.

Pamela (goodreadscompamela_sampson) | 191 comments Hello everyone ... I have a question about the British retreat at Dunkirk. I am writing a memoir for a Holocaust survivor who was in France at the time. He was a young boy and recalls being in Le Mans during the Battle of Dunkirk. He remembers British troops abruptly leaving the area. Since Le Mans was west of Paris, I am wondering if anyone knows if there were British troops stationed this far from the coast when the Battle of Dunkirk took place. Thank you in advance, Pam

message 2667: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (last edited Aug 19, 2015 12:19PM) (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Hi Pamela,
There were British troops in Les Mans as in June 1940 the HQ of the southern part of the British Expeditionary Force was based at Chateau de la Blanchardiere, Le Mans. There is a small British war cemetery in the town, which I have visited.

After the Dunkirk evacuations many British troops remained in France. Notably 51st Highland Division and a force under Karslake's command called Beauman Force (or Division). 51st Division who at the time of Dunkirk were under French command eventually left France via St. Valery. It wasn't until early/mid-August that the last British soldiers were evacuated from France. These events feature in the formal British official histories and a good general history book on this part of the campaign is:

Dunkirk - The Men They Left Behind by Sean Longden Dunkirk - The Men They Left Behind by Sean Longden

I did a quick search and thought you'd like to see this photo taken at Le Mans: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/ite...

I hope this is a help.

Lee Mandel | 4 comments Hello all, I'm Lee and I retired in 2013 after nearly thirty years of active duty as a US Navy physician. My career included tours as Senior Medical Officer aboard three aircraft carriers, four Navy hospitals, and two tours at the US Congress as staff physician. One of the greatest privileges I have had was to serve as Vice Admiral John D. Bulkeley's personal physician for his last two years on active duty. I have been a longtime historian and the last several years I've devoted my time to research and writing and have been fortunate enough to have both books that I've written published. Between the MacArthur Memorial here in Norfolk and the National Archives in College Park, Md, I've been able to pursue my interest in WWII by examining original primary source documents. I'm looking forward to being a member of this group.

Welcome, Lee. I am a retired naval officer too. Admiral Bulkeley was still the head of the INSURV Board when I served aboard USS DEYO (DD-989) in Charleston. He was viewed with awe by all aboard.
