Welcome to the group Brian and like the others have said please do feel free to post and join in.

I wish I had found this group earlier. It would have helped my research.
Books I read about this subject include:
- Fighting in Hell by Peter G. Tsouras
- Enemy at the Gates by William Craig.
I have recently finished my own book about the era. Army of Worn Soles is, I think, unique, presenting the story of Operation Barbarossa from the perspective of a conscripted Red Army officer who retreated, was captured and then escaped from the POW camp.
Anyway, it's good to see this group is here!

Oops, I see you already found it. Excellent.

I read just about anything from that era, fiction and nonfiction. I've even published a couple of short stories centering on those diesel submarines on Amazon.
Anyway great to be here and I've already recommended this group to another life long friend. We were in the Air Force together and he tends toward the European Air War. Go figure.
John

Welcome, John! Don't be shy! Wallflowers get eaten alive by this group!

Many thanks, Geevee! I've already had to add Red Tobruk to my want to read list. -John

Thanks, Mike. Yes I was and am. He left for Eternal Patrol in January 1996 but I really remember those nights, sitting at the kitchen table, listening to him talk about his adventures. Hopefully I can relate some of those, they are a little more colorful than the recorded incidents!

I feel at home already, thanks Happy!

Thanks for the warning Gerald!

Many thanks Rick! That would be great, I've already read some of the threads over on the Group & Buddy Reads board. I shouldn't have any trouble finding appropriate reads for the upcoming themes. -John

Welcome, John. I am retired USN and spent some time in Key West in the late 1980s. Please post some recs for submarine books.

I come to WW2 interest through my Father. He was in the Aleutian Island Campaign from June 2, 1942-Sept 1943. He landed on Dutch Harbor one day before Admiral Yamamoto started the Battle of Midway.
After serving in the Aleutians he developed Hep C and was in the hospital when his unit was attached to the 3rd Army w/Patton.
He couldn't ship out with them. My dad had been raised in a house that only spoke German. So when G2 found out he was sent to oversee interrogations of German POW's.
He was a mess sgt and so he ran the kitchens, and oversaw the POW's they had working in the kitchens also.
I am a voracious reader and look forward to interacting.
GL.

Please feel free to join in when ever you feel comfortable. We don't bite :)
