Hi, Jerry. Nice to find you here. Welcome to the group, which I consider the nicest group on Goodreads.

I just marked "The Great Liars" as a TBR. I didn't quite get it. Is your book all fiction, or is it based on a true story?

Dave, you might have to switch from beer to wine. The majority drinks wine here. :-)

James | 105 comments Hi Karl,

I'm currently reading The Battle of Britain by James Holland, it has really sucked me in thus far.

message 1763: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments Hi Karl, I think you will find The Battle of Britain by James Holland a very good account. Keep us posted on what you think of it as you progress.

The Battle of Britain by James Holland by James Holland

message 1764: by Karl (new)

Karl Øen | 19 comments I actually read it already, and I found it a great read. James Holland took some flak for not having thorough grip on aviaton, he was also critisized (from historians) for not being a historian and he was (of course) shelled for being too young...I think his book compares well with both Deigthon's and Overy's books, his main strength being his ability to present the conflict from both sides. He is also presents facts and figures of The Kanalkampf (especially the E-boot operations) in a more successful and integrated way than his forerunners.

message 1765: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments I wasn't aware that James Holland copped some flak over his book, I thought he did a pretty good job telling the story with a human side and like you said he provided some very interesting information in regards to other aspects of the Battle of Britain not normally covered.

message 1766: by James (last edited Mar 23, 2014 06:33PM) (new)

James | 105 comments I agree Rick. From what I've read so far he seems to have a good grasp on events, particually those leading up to the Battle of Britain itself, namely the invasion of France. I also think it is good that he is not just focusing on the aviation side of the battle. The Battle of Britain was definatly a tri-service affair and it is good that James Holland acknowledges that in such detail.

message 1767: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments Hi James, good to hear from you and nice to know you also enjoyed the book. I don't think I have had any issues with any of his previous books either. I enjoy his style of writing and can't recall finding any major errors in his research. Maybe just a bit of backlash with a 'popular' historian/author.

No one has ever given me flak over my book, "From Shaniko to Pearl Harbor" although it would not bother me much as I know it is all true from my husband's perspective. If he had something wrong, then there might be a mistake, but i make it plain that what I write is what he believed to be true and he saw the bombing with his own eyes. I was touched that Aussie Rick said that the book leaves you with a smile on your face. Thank you, Rick
And welcome Kym. You have a nice name!

Jerry (banjo1) | 66 comments I'm not going to tell you how many years I spent on The Great Liars. It would make the hardest-hearted of you go for the Kleenex, and nicer people would sob openly. Why, you would ask, why spend so much time on ONE project? Not meeting your eye, I would say, "Well, it IS about World War II." Just to get into the subject of the greatest event in the history of mankind requires a tremendous amount of reading. Not just general reading such as histories, autobiographies, biographies, memoirs, or the three volumes of Churchill's War Papers (1,300 pages per), but specialized material like the canvas-bound 1920 copy of Navy Regulations I found that has a mechanism for lifting out a page and replacing it when a paragraph was revised. Then there is the question of characters. How would a junior naval officer be exposed to such historical figures as Churchill, FDR and Stalin? And how would his story unfold before the reader? My solution was to make him the politically connected stepson of a powerful senator. His story is told to an unmarried and naïve young woman who is a Smithsonian researcher in the immediate post-war years. She happens upon him at an old soldiers' home where he has fetched up like driftwood on a forgotten shore. I wanted a thriller frisson running through the narrative, so I gave him a dangerous secret. It is one that puts her in danger when she learns what it is. So all of this took time. A long time. I'm ecstatic over the early review, most of all over the ones that said they didn't want it to end.

If I say "pretty please!", will you, then, tell us (or at least, me :-)) how many years you spent on "The Great Liars"? I am so curious.

Your book really sounds interesting. In general, I prefer non-fiction to fiction, but I also like well-researched historic novels, and your novel does seem to be well researched.

That's not shameful. With the type of book it is, I would say: "Thorough research!"

It took me less than 1 year to write my early-childhood memoir, but it will probably take me 10 years to publish it. I am a computer-idiot, and my husband, while very supportive, has little time to spare.

Although I've been a Goodreads member for a couple of years, numerous distractions have prevented me fully exploring the website and discovering this terrific group. During WWII my father spent many months with the Army training in San Francisco before heading out to Hawaii as a medic’s assistant. He wasn’t overseas on the front lines but he witnessed death.

The hills in the west coast Golden Gate City are good for running.

I just published a novel I started about 8 years ago. My first novel I finished about 10 years ago, submitted to about 60+ publishers and agents w/o success so I put it away and eventually ended up writing and self-publishing the "8-year" book. I'm hoping to get that first book out this summer for the 2014 commemorations of WWI (both books war related, BTW). So don't feel too bad about these things taking time.
