Should have posted here first before diving into "What are you reading now?"

I'm a London-based journalist working on business and finance. All opinions expressed here are my own and not representative of my company, etc.

Reading interests include terrorism, 20th century history (especially WW2 and obscure conflicts), and cooking.

Looking forward to some great discussions in the group!

message 632: by Matthew (new)

Matthew White | 1 comments Hi everyone,
I'm a civil engineer from NZ.
I read a fairly broad range of books but generally find military history to be the most eye-opening and interesting books I've read recently; so much to learn in this field. It's still really hard to believe what people like my grandparents lived through - not that NZ was anywhere near the centre of the action.
I've read John Keegan's general histories, and books by Max Hastings and Antony Beevor. I'm looking forward to finding some great reads off this group.
Cheers.

message 633: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Hi Matthew and welcome to the site.

From my British perspective the help of New Zealanders in the RAF/RNZAF, the navies (Merchant and Royal) and on land (Greece, Crete, N Africa, Italy) were all important so you have a lot to be proud of; plus the pacific theatre too.

I'm sure you'll find many recommendations and be sure to throw some our way too.

message 638: by Bracken (new)

Bracken (nyelome) | 27 comments こんにちは - Hello!

I made the mistake of posting my first comment before posting here. My name is Bracken. I'm a linguist, guitarist, poet, and physicist. One of those pays the bills - the others were tertiary interests that turned into full blown interests.

My principle area of study for the Second World War is the Russo-German Conflict; though principally the following operational time periods: Barbarossa up to Smolensk; Typhoon; Mars and Uranus; Manstein's Counteroffensives; and Bagration.

- Though recently I've discovered there is quite a bit of literature available in Japanese on the Pacific War that remains untranslated (to English). I've studied Japanese since 2002 and as such it's grown into another sphere of interest.

You may see me around infrequently! ( probably Eastern Front area where I feel safest.)

Bracken (nyelome) | 27 comments Sadly I have not. I missed my opportunity there. I have taught English overseas in eastern Romania and in the Netherlands though.

It's necessarily wide. I call it a curse, haha. My therapist tells me its being a genius; though my rebuttal to her was that a genius - as a rule - isn't. I have more questions than answers. If I don't keep my mind entertained my medical issues come to the forefront and claim my awareness.

Sometimes putting my socks on in the morning is a task of inexorable complexity.
