The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I'm in between books. (ReadingEventbut that's not this genre). I may look into Rebecca's suggestion. Thank you!

Jerry H | 43 comments Just finished Scarpetta, my first by Cornwell, and thought the title character was an interesting concoction. Flawed and not overly heroic with the case solved by committee rather than the typical near perfect protagonist.

I really like the Sister Fidelma series! And I really like Peter Tremayne's writing and what he brings to the reader for that period and in that place in history.

Elli | 228 comments I've started a non-fiction, Letters of a Woman Homesteader edited by Elinore P. Stewart. It was collected and edited in 1914, and it really a joy to read! The writer was a woman, a widow with a young daughter who came west to try to start a new life in the west. The letters were written from the Utah-Wyoming border area to her former employer in Denver. The woman is so very upbeat no matter what has happened and capable almost beyond belief. She explains that she and her brothers and sisters lost their parents within a short time of each other, and rather than split up and live with relatives, they decided to stick together at their grandmothers and make a go of it. And to do this, they all had to work colossally hard and do tasks that most people even then would not have realized that they needed doing. Her writing style amplifies in a beautiful way who she is and what she does...her attitudes and observations are making the book shine for me. I'm glad it was recommended to me because I'm not sure I would have found it or chosen it on my own!

That sounds like something I would like. My grandparents and their two daughters (my mother and my aunt) homesteaded in MT in 1915, the original 640 acres of the home ranch was the original homestead.

Jill H. (bucs1960) I have just started the last book in the Peculiar Crimes Unit series that I have not read and am getting nervous waiting for the author to release a new one. I love this series......witty, sly and eccentric. A real joy.

I really liked the first book in the series. Not as impressed with the second because of the muddled personal issues involved. Waiting to read this latest one and see how it goes.

Finished the terrific The Ghosts of Belfast. Fegan, guilt-ridden from his role during the troubles in Northern Ireland, tries to ease his conscience by exacting revenge for the ghosts who haunt him and his actions and the actions of others, both new and old to the cause, jeopardize the hard won fragile peace. An intense and violent but a very personal look at a soldier who must come to terms with his past.

Diane S ☔ | 438 comments Finished The Sixes and I ahve to say I was underwhelmed, didn't hate it but didn't love it either. Writing was a bit simplistic or stilted. Starting Killed at the Whim of a Hat by Colin Cotterill and Misterioso by Arne Dahl. (something seem to be wrong with this site, nothing much is working right or is it just my computer?)

I first read

Shadows in the Street (Simon Serrailler 5) by Susan Hill by Susan Hill which I think is #5 in the series and liked it so well that I looked for other Serrailler books. I was somewhat disappointed with
The Various Haunts of Men (Simon Serrailler, #1) by Susan Hill since the main character barely made an appearance.....but I think they are certainly worth the read.

Jim I just finished "Graveyard Eyes" by David Checko. It is an interesting Police procedural set in Istanbul where the author lives part time. There is a decent discount for the e-version, from the paperback price, on Amazon.

I am about a third of the way through "Open Source". For a 99 cent special it is quite good, at least to this point. My recent experiences with the self published, very low cost e-books hasn't been very good. But, to this point I am enjoying the story.

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Nearly finished with Breaking Silence by Linda Castillo. Interesting plot and the look into the Amish people and their way of life is very different and fascinating. Unfortunately, the "dysfunctional law enforcement officer" is still very much alive and well and intrusive. While I will probably continue to read these from the library as they come out I don't think this series is likely to end up on my list of "favorites" anytime soon.
