I am on the waiting list for a book in the library but got tired of waiting to start reading a new book so since I already had the first 2 books in the Harry Bosch series, I decided to start those. I figure I can go back & forth between books if I decide I don't want to read the Bosch books all in a row, although I was told I probably would want to! Hope they are as good as I keep hearing!! The Black Echo

Sunshine is a rather odd book, not at all like McKinley's usual writing. I didn't care all that much for it the first time I read it. Liked it better the second time and I've re-read it numerous times since. I like the friendship/partnership between the vampire and Sunshine, reluctant although it is. Definitely a different kind of vampire/human relationship.
Stefanie wrote: "havent read anything by her before. guess I expected something totally different from the premise."I think I liked it primarily because it was very different from the usual vampire/human relationship.
McKinley is a very on/off writer for me. Some of her books are in my permanent collection and I re-read them often. Others are marginally 'okay' and some I can't get through at all. She definitely does not have a consistent way of writing and many of her books are listed as YA ...
I just finished my third Cody McFadyen serial killer book starring Smokey Barret. The first two were excellent books of this genre. I wonder(ed) what happened with
. It is as if it was written with no thought or ability; a total disappointment. This is another example which I occasionally encounter of authors that genuinely impress me, and then turn out a real lemon. I still think McFadyen is superb, based upon the first two books in this series, and I will read everything else he puts out. He IS that good! I am sorry for him with this third book.
Two more down, 23 to go-- finished Deeply, Desperately
(loved it-- did she really quit writing this series??) last night, and Crocodile on the Sandbank
tonight while I was cooking dinner. Really enjoyed it too, and fortunately the series is pretty good sized!!
Just finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, and now I am reading Unwanted: A Novel. Hope it is as good as it sounds!
Tim wrote: "It is as if it was written with no thought or ability; a total disappointment."I completely agree. The next book in the series is better, though. It's not as good as the first two books, but the villain will blow you away. I just hope Cody stops with all the angst dealing with personal spirituality. I could care less whether Smoky worships God or prays to a bowl of waxed fruit, and this constant flip flopping and inner turmoil over this subject is beginning to truly get on my nerves. It's time to move on, Mr. Macfadyen. We don't read your books for spiritual enlightenment, but we read them for the chase!
I finished Gone for Good, today. Wow! What a ride! (laughing). This was a fabulous addition to our reading circle. Bravo, Laurin!
Luci wrote: "Not long ago I finished "The Charlemagne Pursuit" and enjoyed it, but not as much as I enjoyed some of his others.I also read "Farewell, My Lovely" and liked it enough to seek out other Marlowe..."
Luci: I enjoyed Fairwell, My Lovely but enjoyed The Big Sleep even more. That's the book that made me want to read more of Chandler.
Just started The Dirty Secrets Club by Meg Gardiner, hope its a good read as its the first one of hers I've read.
Jannene wrote: "Oh, Amanda I have to put that on my TBR list!!!"Go for it Jannene. I'll let you know how it goes.
Reading
. Barclay's stand-alones remind me of Coben's stand-alones, but not quite in the same league. Coben's are great, while Barclay's are good.
Julie wrote: "I just started The Inheritance"That is a great book. Savage wrote some other terrific books but his last one, Scavenger, was a dud.

Thanks for affirming my reaction to my analysis and for recommending the next in series. I don't mind the personal struggles of Smokey. She seems to garner a lot of criticism from women readers. The only thing I question is her leap into a new relationship. I do like her "team."
I am currently reading 'Something Wicked This Way Comes', while I have a break from reading the Alex Cross series. It's my birthday on Friday and my beautiful fiance is getting me a Kindle for my birthday, so this book is more of a filler than anything else.
But with the Alex Cross novels, I learnt a very valuable lesson - don't skip books! Found out something in Double Cross that would have been good if I had read them sequentially (however, I have been borrowing books from the library as I'm saving for two massive holidays, and this is the only one they had that wasn't hardcover... I know I'm fussy!).

I finished A Thief of Time, today. It was my first Hillerman experience. Since it was one of two choices for our group read I didn't worry too much about reading it out of order even though it's the eighth book in the series. I should have worried and just waited to read it after I read the first seven, though. I spent almost the first half of the book trying to figure out who the main characters were and to not confuse the two. Of course I was listening and not reading it, so I'm sure that, also, added to my confusion. I understand that this one was nominated for several awards, so I don't feel that my initial ambivalent response to this book to be fair or just. So, once I manage to pull together all the books in this series in their various available formats, I'll listen to this one again and reevaluate.
Linda wrote: "Tim wrote: "I just finished my third Cody McFadyen serial killer book starring Smokey Barret. The first two were excellent books of this genre. I wonder(ed) what happened with [bookcover:The Darker..."As I said, Linda, the first two are outstanding. You won't be disappointed.

and thrilled to finally be done with; oh, don't get me wrong--I loved Little Dorrit, Dickens was a genius and his book..."i do appreciate your estimation of life and the world of Little Corritt...the world has not changed that much, nor have the people! Thank you. I'm so glad to hear that someone else shares that view!
Hey! The BBC productions have been pretty good - Little D and Great E! Fortunately, Tom C wasn't in either, yet.
Tim wrote: "I don't mind the personal struggles of Smokey. She seems to garner a lot of criticism from women readers."Honestly, I'm not picking on Smoky any more than I do any other protagonist, although, being a woman, I do think I'm a tad harder on the females. I keep wanting to shake them and tell them to just get over themselves and get to living. (laughing)
Jeanie wrote: "I keep wanting to shake them and tell them to just get over themselves and get to living. (laughing) "This is actually one of my numerous 'pet peeves' ... I can deal with one or two books with one or more of the main protagonists having a disastrous personal life that just can't seem to get it together. But too much angst carried on indefinitely will eventually put me off a series.
Part of it is being older and been there, done that, moved on. I don't have a lot of patience for it whether it's in real life or in a book.
Hugh wrote: "But 1071 pages of Victorian era prose is enough for the time being..." As if! (staring at much beloved, well-worn, dogeared and oft read Bronte's, Stevensons, Hugo's, Dumas' and Eliot's) With all kidding aside, they can get kind of grim if I overindulge.
Lisa S wrote: "I'm about to start The Killing Edge by Heather Graham. I just love her.I have to agree about the pages being to long and not just in this genre."
I really enjoyed her Bone Island Trilogy. She is a very good writer!
Theresa wrote: "Just finished reading The Ghosts of Havana by Mike Dennis"The cover art looks pretty cool!
Just finished THE FEAR INDEX - Robert Harris. It's a top-notch read. If it doesn't get you thinking, then go pinch yourself. Then ask yourself, "Who's on first?"
I just finished
. This book was funny, entertaining, and a great read. The characters were delightful and well developed. I loved how Odelia was never going to let her friend's death go. We should all be blessed with that kind of friendship. The ending was totally unexpected that caught me off guard.

The inside was better!
Bryan wrote: "Reading

I do like his writing. But I cannot get somehow with his main series character Myron somebody who lives at home, etc. So I look forward to his stand alones. Perhaps concepts of family and what it's all about are just too different.
Finished The Truth of All Things and it was awfully good for a first book. The profiler is a little like Sherlock Holmes with his deduction powers and I learned alot about the Salem Witch Trials. Now starting
and than on to
.
I recently finished The Deadfall Project by Brett James, an espionage thriller about possible war with Iran. I enjoyed it very much. If you're interested, you can find my review and my interview with the author on my blog.
