Hi Judith, Have you read any of the John Russel series by David Downing? The first one, Zoo Station was set in 1939 Berlin with Russell caught up in intelligence gathering for all sides under the cover of news reporting.

Finished Sushi for Beginners by Marian Keyes on audio book.
Now reading I'm Listening With a Broken Ear by Vicky Kaseorg on Kindle.

Ed (oct1647) Just finished "Defending Jacob". Dynamic characters drawn in interesting ways but the plot dragged in the middle. Fortunately, the unforgettable twist ending was a shock to the system and ended up salvaging the story.

Tim Warner | 72 comments I just finished Shadow Man (Smoky Barrett, #1) by Cody McFadyen . Incredibly compelling. I liked everything about this book because it is so well-written. This is superb. I don't know what I will start next. I definitely want to continue with Cody Mcfadyen. Waiting for my library to get #2 of Smokey in.

Jeanie (birdyseeds) | 382 comments Just finished Bury Your Dead. Now I understand why this book won so many awards last year. I don't think it would've made such an impact if I hadn't already read all of the others first, but still...whew...wow.

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Just finished For Love of Livvy and The Taste of Copper and for both, the best I could do was "okay". I really wanted to rate "Copper" higher as I absolutely love the main character but unfortunately for me, the issues are beginning to outweigh that.

kento (daechwita) | 84 comments Just finished Gossamer by Lois Lowry
Currently reading Murder on Ice by Carolyn Keene

message 6314: by Ed (new)

Ed (oct1647) Just finished Harlan Coben's new book "Stay Close". I've liked all his books and this was no exception; unique, interesting and extemely likeable New Jersey characters with insight and wit in a compelling mystery with an excellent twist ending. Coben writes bestsellers for a reason - they are incredibly entertaining to mystery readers and "Stay Close" might be one of his best.

Georgia | 554 comments I have started Silent Prey (Lucas Davenport, #4) by John Sandford at first
I didn't think I would like it - crazy doctor escapes from prison. He loves to experiment on people and slashes away!!!!!!!!! I was going to "let it go", but read on to see why people like John Sanford. The story is getting better. The repartie between Lucas Davenport and Fell remind me of "Danny Regan and Jackie" his partner on "Blue Bloods" (one of my favorite TV shows)

The first books in the "Prey" series are all with Davenport as a single city detective and all serial killer plots. Very good, but toward the end I got a little burned out, sort of running out of 'different' serial killers. Fortunately Sandford decided to go at an angle, got him into a different job at a state level, married with a family and the series definitely picked up again. This is one of my personal favorite series and I re-read many of the books repeatedly. He's also started a newer series with one of the officers working for Davenport in the state job, Virgil Flowers, which is excellent as well.

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Just finished Fatal Judgment. Should have read the reviews a bit more carefully, as I was hoping for more police procedural and this book would appeal much more to Christian romance readers I believe. Well written, but not my kind of book, unfortunately.

message 6322: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) 'Nother one down-- 29 to go in this batch! Finished Jolie Blon's Bounce Jolie Blon's Bounce (Dave Robicheaux, #12) by James Lee Burke last night. James Lee Burke is one of my 4 or 5 favorite mystery authors and he does two things extraordinarily well-- first, he mixes description in with narrative so well that you don't realize a picture is being painted. You wind up with a story set in a place that arose fully formed in your mind as the story unfolded. The second thing is dialogue. His dialogue reveals his characters even as it communicates and pushes the story forward.

And I'm sorry, I just love Clete Purcel. I realize he is intensely flawed and there is almost nothing about him that withstands scrutiny-- but, dude.

Jannene | 775 comments I just finished The Mephisto Club. The story was really creepy and dark. Talks of demons and Satan that could keep one up were unnerving. The story line was intriguing. It just held my attention. I love how the author had each chapter alternate between characters and how it was woven into the plot. A great read, 5 stars.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Two more down. 27 left in this batch. I love when I get near the end of a set of 8 or 10, and I'm so close to being done with most of them that they fall like dominoes. Accomplishment, and off to a new bunch, all at the same time.

The Reversal The Reversal (Mickey Haller, #3) by Michael Connelly -- didn't see the end of this one coming!

The Winter Garden Mystery The Winter Garden Mystery (Daisy Dalrymple, #2) by Carola Dunn -- the second in this series. Took me a bit to get absorbed in it but it paid off in the end. The first one was the same way for me.

Yes, I'm finally to the point in the book where they reveal Maisie's history. I was beginning to worry, she seemed so isolated in the beginning of the book. I'm enjoying the backstory.

Jim Crocker | 176 comments I just finished Generation Kill, by Evan Wright. Although the book is non-fiction, it satisfies the requirement for "Mystery, Crime and Thriller." It's all that and more. On the other hand, it may tell more about Marines than you care to know. I think Wright is every bit as good as Mark Bowden in getting right inside the events of a story.
