Went to the library to pick up Freezing by Clea Koff. Her first novel and the first in a projected series. These are based on her work in forensic anthropology to match missing persons and unidentified bodies. Her very first book, The Bone Woman: A Forensic Anthropologist's Search for Truth in the Mass Graves of Rwanda, Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo, was an accessible and compassionate work of non-fiction.

And I like that he roams out of the greater Seattle area to our humble counties.

If you are looking for great writing and characters of the same caliber as Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, I think you will love James Lee Burke. His long-running series of Dave Robicheaux novels are top-notch in every respect!
Stefanie wrote: "going to start with The Missing by chris mooney"Good choice. Just read the fourth one in that series which was excellent (and continued the story from The Missing).
Finished Gun Games and liked it okay but it is not one of my favorites. Just started an ARC of Bleed for Me. Like the psychological overtones of his novels.

He also plays in the Rock Bottom Remainders band with Amy Tan and Dave Barry and Stephen King and others.

Just finished my re-read of
Presumed Innocent. When I read it before, Goodreads didn't exist...so this time I wrote a review. 5 stars of course. :-)Trying to figure out what to read next. Diary of a Small Fish
is on my TBR pile, but I think I might wait and read something else first. Maybe
The Instant Enemy by Ross Macdonald.

His character is Logan McRae, a detective in Aberdeen, Scotland.
I think someone here tipped me off to him.
I've just started The Floating Admiral, which was first published in 1930 and written by members of the Detection Club, including Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers and GK Chesterton. Each author wrote a chapter based on the preceding chapters. It's an interesting read for fans of British Golden Age crime fiction.

That was kind of fun. A "progressive" mystery. I'm trying to read an Irish one right now - Yeats Is Dead!: A Mystery by 15 Irish Writers.

Just started my first Lee Child/Jack Reacher (Killing Floor), on a brief respite from working my way through all the Michael Connelly books and am loving it! So many books, so little time..... ))
I needed a Lew Archer fix (he is one of my all-time favorite protagonists), so I decided to go with
. Ross Macdonald is such a talented writer. I've enjoyed every single book of his that I've read so far. I am adding all the Lee Child/Reacher books to my TBR pile now.
I'm currently reading Shadow by Swedish writer, Karin Alvtegen and Plan for Chaos by John Wyndham and enjoying both so far.
I have just finished The Red Thumb Mark which I really enjoyed. I have just started A Quiet Belief in Angels by R.J. Ellory but am having difficulty getting in to the story. Has anyone else read this? Thoughts please.
I'm actually making some headway on my new book 'A Dish Served Cold'. Been able to get 800-1000 words a day down and then leave some notes to get me started up again. Feels good to be writing again, especially dialog. I don't know what is going to happen yet so its fun. Here's a taste of the rough draft:Gardillas knows he’s on screen and playing the part, tilting his head and stretching his neck like a for real gangsta tough guy. Sitting rigid as a West Point cadet and trying not to look scared. It’s not working. Eckles can see the damp handprints he leaves on the stainless steel table top. He sometimes forgets he is shackled and seems surprised when the chain brings him up short. He is everything Eckles has expected. The detective rattles the knob to get Hector’s attention, waits a few seconds and then enters the room.
Hector has started the cholo routine, bobbing his head and neck like a banty rooster, chin stuck out and a scowl on his face. He probably practices in a mirror. Eckles drops the buff manila folder on the table, hangs his jacket on the back of the chair and sets himself quietly in the old office chair. The wheels need oiling.
“Word is you need some help with this assault beef. I’m where the deal starts. What you got for me?”

The first half is excellent but then, after a major event, the book completely falls apart in the second half, becoming a different story that I found implausible and just not worthy of what came before it. Very disappointing.
Just finished
by Robin Maxwell. Excellent tale of the princes who vanished from the Tower of London. Just starting
by Margaret Maron
I've just finished The Bitch by Les Edgerton. I very much enjoyed it and will review when I've had a day or so of reflection.I'm about to start Hypothermia by Arnaldur Indridason and an pretty excited by the prospect.
Just started Volcano Watch and it's hooked me in quickly. This may end up being one of those very late nights.
I finished an ARC of Blue Monday. It seems to be mainstream fiction masquerading as mystery/suspense. Pretty good though.

? It is one of my very favorite Sharon Kay Penman books. It deals with Richard III.
Just finished Hostile Witness. Well crafted thriller, but I had some problems with characterization. Wicked pace, though!
I went to the local library looking for The Woman in Black by Susan Hill and, of course, it was checked out and there was a 2 page list of people waiting for it. What I did find, however, was Mrs. de Winter also by Susan Hill. It's supposed to be a sequel to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. It was in a box of books listed at $.10 each. Didn't figure I could go wrong.
Lady Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "I love Joe Pike!"I am not sure there is anyone better than Crais. And his Pike novels -- whats not to like.
Just finished "Walking the Perfect Square" which I liked very much for Moe Praeger, a witty and quite likable ex-NYPD cop hired to find a missing Hofstra college student in the late 70's New York City. I worked in the city then and it took me back. I plan to read the other Moe Praeger books in the series.
That looks good, Ed. I was just finishing high school in NYC in the late 70s... might have to stick that on TBR.

Just way too 'messy' for me and seemed like a lot of that was added to be able to cut back on the archaelogical 'forensics' I enjoyed in the first book.
Definitely not interested enough to buy it ... will probably check occasionally to see if the library has it.

I just finished The Pure in Heart by Susan Hill and it was terrific even if I could have used a little more resolution of some of the threads. It was the second in the series but I don't think I missed much not reading the first. I'll be looking for more in this series.

Dorie wrote: "Ruth has become a person I don't like very much. And Harry is annoying me that he isn't making that final decision between his wife and Ruth. Now if he does it will only be because of the baby. "That's unfortunate after I liked the first book so much. There were things I wasn't all that fond of with Ruth in the first book but had hopes she would strengthen as a character as the series went on. Sounds as if I don't need to bother with the third.
Just finished Volcano Watch and while I didn't stay up late to finish it, did start in again early (like 4 AM when I woke up). This ended up being one of my rare 5-star reviews and I now have another series on my rather skimpy 'auto buy' list. I liked the first of this series, Badwater, very well and this one is even better.
