Me tooooo!!! I love Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Doors. I especially like ABBA and Bob Dylan. I have a bunch of Bob Dylan's children's books he's written in the past couple of years because they go along to the songs he's written. My favorite was Blowing in the Wind with Joan Baez.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Can't discuss people's preferences? I think Otto should shut down GR because that's basically what it is—discussing people's preferences. Maybe you're not supposed to make fun of or scoff at or criticize people's preferences, which I wasn't doing. I was just having some fun with Bandit because I know Dylan's voice is an acquired taste.

message 2178: by Tressa (last edited Nov 28, 2011 05:27PM) (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I like Barry Manilow, John Denver, ABBA, Joan Baez, Eva Cassidy, David Cassidy, Judy Collins, and Freddy Fender. Let's never be ashamed of the music that brings us joy!

message 2179: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments No I translated poorly, what it means is that one cannot understand another's preferences, Discussions are fine and needed, and another of our sayings is that you only tease the ones you love. Forgive my poor translating, I meant no offense to you.

message 2180: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Oh, I'm not offended. Just wanted Bandit to know I was only joking. I was confused about why it's not a good thing to mention and the have someone comment on our preferences. Thanks for clearing that up. :-)

message 2181: by Bandit (new)

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments I know, I know, Tressa. It took nearly a year cause zombies are sloooow, but now I can almost always tell when you're joking :)

message 2182: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Almost huh? We need to work up to always.

message 2183: by Bandit (new)

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments well, I'd hate to say "yeah, I got it, totally" and then be thrown for a loop, so I say "almost"

message 2184: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Just know this: I would never deliberately hurt your feelings. Sometimes I—like others here—get caught up in the kidding and joking but I never set out to insult you or anything. I'm just shocked that anyone appreciates Dylan's voice. I expect people not to so I'm never offended that they don't like him.

message 2185: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 487 comments That's the thing about the internet. We, as people, rely so heavily on physical responses and mannerisms when talking that it is simply too easy to misunderstand an innocent comment.

Believe me, I got very used to the taste of my foot before getting in the habit of double-checking what I am saying and using something to indicate emotion when needed.

And now, since I tend to talk too much and go off topic, I really have to watch myself. That and slow down when angry or excited. It doesn't help that I can be seriously sarcastic!

So I do my best to be generous in interpreting comments.

message 2186: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I like your wordy posts, Brett. Don't stop. There are some times when I look at what I've typed and change some things or add a smiley because my words could be misinterpreted.

message 2187: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments Tressa, I think dylan is the bomb, and I actually think his songs I can only really appreciate when sung by himself, it goes together perfect. Have you ever listened to Leonard Cohen, his lyrics are amazing and poetic as well, I am certain you would enjoy, skip the hallelujah song though, it's been over done.

message 2188: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I have just always loved the unapologetic scratchiness of Dylan's voice. It's refreshing to me in this age of manufactured singers that someone can sing with such raw intensity. Now when he garbles his voice too much, I don't enjoy that. I actually had a double live album where Dylan was mumbling so badly and singing out of tune on purpose, that I gave it to a record store when they wouldn't give me any money for it. But when he's on his game and sings in a clear voice, it's great to hear him sing his wonderful songs. Even if you don't like Dylan as a singer, you have to admit he's a legendary songwriter.

I like Cohen's voice a lot. Just the other day I listened to "Famous Blue Raincoat." I like the different versions of "Hallelujah," but it has been done to death.

I love poetry so that's why I've always been more drawn to folk songs and singers.

message 2189: by Bandit (new)

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments I can agree with you guys on Cohen. Great songs.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Oh, I feel the same way about Tom Waits. I like one song: "Heart of Saturday Night." That's about it. Tried listening to his other stuff, but I do not like it. He sounds like he's pulling a Godfather Marlon Brando with cotton stuffed between his cheeks and gum. At least Cohen's voice is deep and smooth and understandable; he doesn't growl incoherently.
