I read a book 20 or so yrs ago that I thought I'd like to read again. Can't remember the name though or the author. The setting was in historical England and the heroines name was Ragan or Rowdena. He father dies leaving her dressed as a knight to defend the castle etc...

It may be Defy Not the Heart by Johanna Lindsey. It was released in 1989. Heroine's name is Reina, she's an orphan (father died rather recently on Crusade) and she spends first three chapters or so in armor at castle's battlements.
Thank you, that sounds like it. Ms. Lindsey was a favorite of mine 20 yrs ago.
