Dancing with the Stars Chat
At first I thought that I wasn't really excited about the celebs, but I'm now thinking there might be some interesting match-ups. Jennifer Grey and Margaret Cho are two of the females I'm looking forward to seeing. The guys, I guess Rick Fox looks good, although I am curious about what Michael Bolton and David Hasselhoff can do. I'm terribly disappointed that Edyta won't be back. I thought she was so classy. I'm thinking I will want to close my eyes when Bristol Palin dances or attempts to. The pairing of Jennifer Grey and Derek Howe should be exciting and provide some great dancing.
Susanna wrote: "I hear Bristol Palin is already a Kate Gosselin backstage."Uh-oh...
Oh, and I also am glad Mark is back, because obviously his knee has healed up well :)
I'm interested to see Jennifer and Florence, and disappointed that Dmitry and Julianne won't be back this season.Lacey is my favorite pro, though, so I'm pleased about that. This upcoming season's cast of "stars" sure isn't an improvement on last season.
Jamie wrote: "I'm interested to see Jennifer and Florence, and disappointed that Dmitry and Julianne won't be back this season.Lacey is my favorite pro, though, so I'm pleased about that. This upcoming season's c..."I keep thinking that with the popularity of the show I am going to be blown away by the great celebrities they come up with. Hasn't happened, even though I still enjoy the show.
Kathy - I completely agree. It's kind of funny that the pros seem like bigger celebrities to me than do most of the "Stars."
Yup, ditto Kathy and Jamie! I'm typically more excited to watch the pros than the stars, and I'm surprised there haven't been bigger stars lately. Boy, if I were a star I'd LOVE to go on the show!
So, what do we all think of the new season!?!?!? I didn't think there were too many stand-outs last night, though I thought the first girl (dancing with Tony) has potential and I really liked the kid who danced with Lacey. I think Jennifer Grey did a lovely job but it was perhaps a bit over-hyped. And I certainly found "The Hoff" entertaining but... um, I'm not sure he was really doing ballroom, haha! I'm happy to see Mark back but not sure he'll be around long being paired with Bristol :-(
I was trying to watch DWTS and House and then Two and a Half Men. It was challenging to say the least. I ended up missing quite a bit of DWTS, but I wasn't too excited about the lineup anyway. I got to see some I really wanted to, like Jennifer Grey and "The Hoff." I agree, Kathryn with your assessments of them. I do want to keep an eye on Jennifer Grey and Derek, should be the couple to watch.
I love Derek!!! He is such a great choreographer and seems to get so much out of his partners. Plus, he seems really sweet :-)
Thus far, my favorites are Kyle and Jennifer. Rick Fox did a lot better than I expected, but I wonder how he'll do in other styles...like the jive or something.
I think the only one I managed to miss was "The Situation" (who?), and evidently I didn't miss much. That said, I enjoyed it.
Susanna wrote: "I think the only one I managed to miss was "The Situation" (who?), and evidently I didn't miss much."Yeah, is his show popular? I don't think I've ever even heard of him before. That said, I don't watch much TV so maybe I'm just in the dark ages of TV here, haha!
I just watched the show on the Internet and enjoyed it. I love Florence Henderson and always think it's great when older stars give it a go. She's 76 and has fantastic legs! Wow, I wish I looked that good. And I really cracked up when she flashed the camera.
I thought the young boy Corey was really good too. I was surprised by him.
I hope David Hasselhoff or Michael Bolton get kicked off first. They sucked.

Well, I see The Hoff was the first to go. I kind of thought he'd stay around longer just because he is popular (or, at least, the media wants us to think so!) but I agree he was one of the worst. I would have rather it been Micahel Bolton as I thought he was no good, either, and didn't even seem to enjoy himself. But, no great loss with The Hoff, IMO.
I'm so excited to watch tonight!!!I think week two starts to give us an idea of who were the "one hit wonders" and who are going to start to improve each week.
I decided not to watch until Bristol is voted off. There is no way that she is a "star" and I don't want to see her mother in the audience.
So, thoughts on last night:Overall I'm impressed with most of the contestants, and I do think many are improving.
I agreed with *most* of the scoring with the exception that I though Margaret Cho deserved higher marks (7s) and that they were far to mean and low scoring to Michael Bolton. I mean, yes, he's the worst dancer on right now, IMO, but a THREE?! I only consider a three for the likes of that P. Diddy or whoever it was that one season that danced with Ashely DelGrossa (sorry about the spelling). Also, not sure why they scored Bristol so high. I mean, she was better than last week, but no way did she deserve an eight.
I also thought they were a little unfair to Brandy. I didn't think she was that fantastic, but I think they are expecting more from her than is fair yet. I know last week she looked a lot better, but it was a closed hold dance and she had a long skirt. So, what appeared to be really good maybe was just lucky? Not sure... But, I still think she's got great potential.
Oh, and I couldn't really tell that The Situation was any better, despite twice the practice time since last week...
Other than that, my favs are still my favs, but there is some wiggle room yet.
I agree, Ann! I think my favorites right now are Tony's partner, the Disney kid, and Jennifer Grey. I also thought Bruno was really mean to Michael Bolton--I mean, unless there is something going on that they didn't show in the clips, at least Bolton looked like he was trying. I think it's just cruel to rub in in like that when he is clearly the worst dancer anyway.
Ann, it is rather hard to understand how Bristol Palin could receive an 8, when Jennifer Grey, the best guest dancer, received only all 8's. No way is Bristol even close to Jennifer's level. And, I'm really disappointed in Bruno being so mean to Michael Bolton. A 3 is just way too mean, along with Bruno's comments. I was surprised at Kyle and Lacy, very good. I love Margaret Cho, too.
I agree with your comments about Margaret Cho. I thought she was great and they scored her too low. I think the Disney kid has lots of natural talent and I look forward to seeing how he progresses. And Bristol's mom was all over the show. Can I say Yuck?
There are quite a few good dancers, I'm enjoying this season so far.

I agree, Sarah Palin should be treated just like anyone else's mom or whomever on the show. If Bristol wanted to go home and the mom was there, well, we've seen lots of the contestant's family (kids, spouse, whatever) on the show before so I can't complain. But, they were interviewing her way too much in the audience. It was a rating stunt, I think, and really undermines even more that Bristol is on the show only as "Sarah Palin's kid" and not being a "star" in her own right. I'm not saying this from a political standpoint but just that it's not fair to the other contestants. So, no surprise with Bolton leaving. Oh, and I agree I thought Margaret Cho was better than they gave her credit for! I hope she continues to improve. I thought it was really sweet how she said she is feeling like a dancer now.
I was really moved by Margaret Cho too. When she was crying and saying how she didn't have to make funny faces but that she was a dancer I thought that was awesome. I hope she stays long enough to really have a fantastic routine and impress the judges.
Bye, bye Michael Bolton!
Bye, bye Michael Bolton!
Yeah, too much Sarah Palin. I'm assuming she was only there for this week, as her schedule probably will keep her busy elsewhere. I agreed with Michael Bolton getting the axe, but I did feel a little sorry for him that he had to go out under such harsh criticism and a 3 score.
I read something online today saying that Michael Bolton wants an apology from Bruno. Several of the professionals chimed in, too, about Bruno's inappropriate remarks.
Kathy wrote: "I read something online today saying that Michael Bolton wants an apology from Bruno. I do think that it is Bruno's job to give criticism. Isn't he always kinda over the top?
In my mind, the show is about learning to dance, loving dance, being dedicated and improving. There are a few people who have natural dance talent, and that is usually pretty evident right away and they are also usually the ones who win. For everyone else, it's about personal bests, learning, growing, and entertaining the audience. As long as someone is trying hard, I don't think it's really fair to give them anything less than a "4" or to say "your dance was the worst ever" etc. That is just mean! :-( I felt Michael Bolton was trying, even though he pretty much has zero dance talent or musicality (odd since he is a singer!) he still did not deserve a "3"--but especially not the harsh criticism. That should be reserved for people who make the show into a joke or a personal publicity stunt and don't take the dancing part seriously (P Diddy!) It was pretty obivous Bolton's time on the show was limited--why be cruel to the poor guy, especially since he was already so self-conscious. If I were him, I probably would never feel like dancing again after that and I don't think that's what DWTS should be about! :-( It's not like it's "So You Think You Can Dance" and the contestants are trying to become professionals.
I really enjoyed the "storytelling theme." I thought most of the dances were really entertaining and that the dancers really tried to get into the characters. Personally, I did not find Rick Fox at all sexy, though--he seemed really awkward with some of his "hip action," but then again that guy just annoys me anyway so maybe I was being unfair. Is I keep wondering what all the hype is about. I mean, sure, he's good-looking but he seems so full of himself :-/ On the other hand, I'm so glad Florence will be able to dance another week. She just seems to truly love every moment of the experience and gosh darn it if her routine didn't bring tears to my eyes--well, that and her talking about her husband. That was so sweet!I don't think there was much surprise about Margaret Cho going home. I appreciate the message she and Louis were trying to convey, but it really didn't come across as a "story" and I think it just looked like another dance. Moreover, her lack of training time really showed as I think it was a big step backward after the previous week. But, I'm glad she and Louis were proud of what they accomplished and seems like they will have a nice friendship to take away from the ballroom :-)
Oh, and I loved the guitar/violin face-off between Mark and Val. That was great and a nice surprise.
I was sorry to see Margaret Cho go home, just because I really like her. She was really struggling with the dancing though. It was a fair elimination. I look forward to seeing her on Drop Dead Diva.
Aww, sorry to hear Margaret left. I love her on Drop Dead Diva and I think she's a good person. I didn't watch - how was Michael Bolton? Any fireworks with Bruno?
Joy wrote: "Aww, sorry to hear Margaret left. I love her on Drop Dead Diva and I think she's a good person. I didn't watch - how was Michael Bolton? However, watching the picture, I noticed Bruno smiling big-time at Michael, but I didn't notice Michael smiling back. LOL! If anyone heard what was said, I'd love to know.
I just got to watch the show last night, and was highly entertained. I kind of wanted even more stories, but I liked that there was a theme and that they were allowed to use props, etc. :)I was sorry to see Margaret go, as I thought she was really enjoying the experience. That said, I didn't think she really improved over last week. Still, I would have liked to see The Situation go first...
I think my fav. routines were Jennifer/Derek, Kyle/Lacy, and Audrina/Tony. All were well danced and all tried to tell a story. :)
Nothing was said between Bolton and the judges but the cameras showed close-ups on Bruno grinning during the performance and applauding wildly so I assume it was supposed to be all kiss-and-make-up. Michael Bolton was introduced as being very generous for stepping in at the last minute to sing and that he was here "doing what he does best" Michael said he was glad to be back and see everyone again. It was pretty brief convo-wise. But, I was impressed with how good he sounded and thought it was a lovely performance with the boys choir and Jonathan and Anna dancing together :-) Bolton certainly infuses more emotion into his voice than he was able to with his dancing so I felt like his performance allowed him to redeem himself a little bit on the DWTS stage.
Kathryn wrote: "Nothing was said between Bolton and the judges but the cameras showed close-ups on Bruno grinning during the performance and applauding wildly so I assume it was supposed to be all kiss-and-make-up..."Yes, Kathryn, I was glad he had a chance to show off his singing talent. I also felt it was a redemption of sorts for him. I did get to hear a little of his singing and was very pleased, too.
Joy wrote: "I've always enjoyed Michael Bolton as a singer. Not everyone can be a twinkle toes!"So true! I actually think it would be neat to show each contestant doing what they do best--even just a few minutes of a clip, rather than all the interviews that can get a little redundant. I think it's an especially great lesson for kids to see that we are all talented in different ways!

That's a great idea, Kathryn!

Brilliant, Kathryn! That's fantastic!!
And yes, I, too, was happy to Bolton sing and surprised at how well he did. It was a very lovely piece all the way around.
I enjoyed this week. I mean, they are two dances that are really hard to fake your way through. Sorry, but a rumba just doesn't look like a rumba unless you move your hips (which, is why I thought Kurt was a little robbed). But, I thought Jennifer and Derek were fantastic! They really looked like they were doing the Argentine tango! :)Also, too bad the judges didn't say anything about Sitch's lifts, 'cause I thought he did them well enough. Still though, I think he was the right choice to go...
I thought he was the right person to go as well. I don't usually notice technical things like footwork but he was really a mess this week.
And yes, wow, Jennifer and Derek were fabulous! She really kicked ass this week.

I didn't watch the whole thing but I saw The Situation and I think it's right that he left. Will Bristol go next?
Not a stellar night overall. I disagreed with the judges a lot. And can someone *please* figure out what a lift *actually* is? I seem to recall a while back it being "any move you couldn't perform on your own." But, that certainly isn't the case anymore. (poor Tony... I wonder what was up between him and CarryAnne?)Still, I was sorry to see Florence go. Not that perhaps she wasn't the right choice technically, but I think the show meant so much to her. Though, she was very cute and gracious in her exit speech. :)

I'm really looking forward to more Corky choreography! :D
