Chachic | 262 comments Thanks! I'll check it when I get home, I don't have web mail access here in the office. Argh, I'm thinking of removing that text box. It doesn't seem to work properly with WordPress, it keeps on adding other things to the code.

Lynai | 1188 comments This thread got me thinking.

What's an ideal site for a book blog?

Tumblr? Wordpress?

I would really love to read your comments. Thanks. :)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Though I don't have Twitter I think it is the best flat-porm (a deliberate word on my part) for a good book review.

Just think of it, writing of something profound, of that one book that affected or ruined your day at the most in just (ETA)*140 words. C'mon, the man who can come up with a decent review for a book/movie review is much more a human being of great word smith skillz.

*The above comment took only 160 characters or less (exluding this postscipt, of course)makes my case for Twitter as book blog flat-porm (yeah, that annoying word again) highly feasible. Ehehehe... (--,)

Can you make a review of Stephen King books in 160 words only?

Ooh, thanks for the further clarification, Aaron.

message 61: by Lynai (new)

Lynai | 1188 comments Hmmm, Jzhun, actually, you have a point. Especially for an entity like me who cannot string together a sensible paragraph kahit na 40 words max pa. Haha!

Pero, seriously. For those who maintain either tumblr or wordpress accounts. What do you think?

message 62: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments On Twitter: oh, it's not words, it's characters. :)

Lynai: It depends on your preference. :) I use Wordpress hosted on my domain, Chachic uses Wordpress.com. A friend uses Blogger, Aaron uses Tumblr. Some just stick to reviewing books here in GR. Multiply also works since it has a review section already. I use Wordpress because I've been using it for years, and all my other blogs are using Wordpress. Blogger is by far the easiest, I think, but for functionality and flexibility, Wordpress wins IMHO. :)

message 63: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments @Ace: take this passage "the man who can come up with a decent review for a book/movie review is much more a human being of great word smith skillz."

As of now I'm professing that I'm no man of such caliber, Ace. But let's see. I'm up to the challenge. And Twitters is blocked in the office. So what gives, eh?

message 64: by Ariel (new)

Ariel Acupan | 390 comments I saw a lot of reviews posted on wordpress and tumblr. But I think Tumblr is much more user-friendly. But it's just me. You could check out mine, not really just a book blog. hehehehe *shameless plugging* in short kapalmuks. hahahaha
Pinoy Peter Pan

message 65: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Err I actually don't understand how Tumblr is the most user-friendly because every time I go on a site over there, I get confused. :( It's not clear how I can leave comments and things like that.

I would have to say go with either Blogger or WordPress. Most book bloggers use those two sites. I love WordPress because it has a lot of built-in features that I utilize such as Blog Stats and getting a ping whenever someone links back to your post, etc. But I also envy certain functions of Blogger. I think most people would say Blogger is easier to use but a lot of techie people recommend WordPress.

And Jayson, I've seen a blogger who posts Twitter-like summaries with her reviews. I mean she posts her reaction in just 140 characters.

message 66: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments AAAAAAND Goodreads ate my comment yay. :|

Ariel and Chachic: see, matter of preference. I'm very partial to Wordpress because I used to design sites, and Wordpress is easy to modify/hack to make it do what I want (ah programming, I miss you sometimes). Tumblr is okay, but I think it is really meant for short posts? I like the reblog feature, but their comments feature confuses me. ^^

Chachic: Who is this Twitterer? I want to follow her. I need to learn how to be concise with my reviews (this is why my editor takes so long to edit my reviews -- I tend to ramble). ^^;

message 67: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Tumblr for me is the easiest. Wordpress and Blogger needs a lot of design customizations. And I am too lazy for HTML and CSS. Those stuffs gives me more headache than C++ and java. I hate front-end website customizations.

The news feed on both blogging platforms are not that neat. Unlike in tumblr, it is easy to read the posts of the people you follow.

message 68: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Tina, you design sites? I should've met you sooner so I could've asked your help in putting up my blog! LOL. I don't have programming skillz so my blog is very basic. Oh sorry, I couldn't remember who that blogger was. I browse through so many blogs that I can't remember all of them.

Aaron, oh so Tumblr is good in keeping track of the people you follow? What I don't like about it is, it's not good for people who don't have Tumblr sites. At least with Blogger and WordPress, it's easier to follow for those who don't have their own blogs. And most people who follow blogs use some kind of feed reader anyway like Google Reader.

I used to. :P I stopped doing so because my work demands more of content management, and I'm just plain lazy at designing now (especially when my colleagues design better than I do).

message 70: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments I wish I could design! I'm not very artistic so I'm not capable of doing things like that. I envy you!

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Chachic wrote: "I wish I could design! I'm not very artistic so I'm not capable of doing things like that. I envy you!"

Thanks. I'm not good with flashy designs though, unlike my teammates, that's why I don't accept freelance design projects anymore (plus my work is about web, doing that in freelance would drive me nuts).

But for book blogs, I still think content is king. I don't like it when blogs have too many flashy graphics because it distracts me from the content. That's why I love The Book Smugglers so so much -- it's wordy, but you know that they really thought about what they wrote. :)

message 72: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Yep, content really matters in book blogging. As long as the layout is readable and it doesn't take long to load, you don't have anything to worry about. I love how Ana and Thea do their reviews but my favorites are Angie's (Angieville), Michelle (See Michelle Read) and Holly (Book Harbinger) because I feel like we read the same type of books.

And I can join that meetup even I'm just a newbie in book blogging?

Ariel: Oh you must put up your book blog too. Have you read my post about joining Bart's Bookshelf's YA-D2 Challenge?

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments TINA: Thanks sistah!! My brother(by blood) told me its a little too childish, though. And thank you to for lending me Happyface which turns out to be a good material for my first few posts. :)

Jzhun: Thank you. I dunno if its that "maganda", I don't like customization that much. XD

Lynai: Yeah. I've chosen wordpress. way cleaner than blogger.

Here's the link to my (still under-constructed)wordpress book blog:

Not that much to see for now. Just testing it for a bit.

@Tina: How do you add a Goodreads widget in a blog?

Yay for your blog! To add the widget, go to your account > widgets, then just copy the code there. Play with it to show which shelf you want to show.

Adding it on a wordpress.com blog - I think there's a widget option on your template (Appearance > Widgets on Wordpress). Get the Text widget, then paste the code there. :)

message 94: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Jzhun, you can't. The goodreads widget is flash and wordpress.com doesn't support flash widgets.

The only way you can add a goodreads widget or any flash widget is to self-host your blog.

Ahhh, that's why you don't have that on your blog...
Too bad...

message 98: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments GUYS! BELIEVE ME! YOU CANT! If only wordpress.com does support flash widgets, I would have extremely cool widgets all over my blog.

message 99: by Tina (last edited Sep 21, 2010 02:25AM) (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Oops sorry! I didn't know about the Flash restrictions on wordpress.com ^^; I have self-hosted Wordpress on my domain kasi. Sorry sorry. :)

Although...I think you can use the other widgets as long as they're not flash? There's the grid widget and custom widget. :)

Now that you guys have blogs, send them over to Chachic too and then join us this weekend. :D

message 100: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments If you want to have flash widgets on your blog, try blogger.com. It's more flexible but wordpress, in terms of cleanliness and manageability, still wins.
