If you remember exact names, sentences, or unusual words, the "search text contents" function of https://archive.org/ is invaluable.

Thank you! I’ll check these resources before asking this group about a series I’m looking for to finish!

If you read it on Kindle Unlimited then there's a record of it. Go to:
Amazon
Accounts and Lists
Memberships and subscriptions
Kindle Unlimited
Your Borrowed Items
Make sure in the "show" box, "all" (or "returned") is selected.
Then keep scrolling down. It will show your every KU borrow since the beginning of time (or at least, since you joined KU).
This might be a beneficial resource specifically for anyone looking for 80s YA book series. I had vague memories of a book from a series called "Homeroom" and I was only able to find more details about it at this site called Cliquey Pizza. They have a comprehensive listing of nearly every YA book series that came out during the decade.
Charity, you need to post your new request in the "UNSOLVED" folder because you're looking for one specific book. Here's the quick link:

Be sure to include genre (e.g., fantasy for teens, thriller?) and lots of plot details in the header (topic title) so someone might recognize your book from that description alone.

https://www.storypilot.com/time-trave... This is a great list of a lot of time-travel-related books. I hope this helps.
The term "novel" is more specific than "book". Novels are fictional stories (at least in part), and need to be of a certain length (typically 40,000 words or more).

Nice find, Becca. This might also get around the problem of Worldcat.org occasionally switching to a non-English language. Note: "...fiction and movies from libraries around the world."

Glad to help! I didn't realise it hadn't already been mentioned here - it's helped me out on so many occasions.
One suggestion is to limit your Google search to one website - such as Goodreads or Amazon because their book reviews contain a wealth of small details and keywords.
Google search of Goodreads:
site:goodreads.com "keyword" "exact phrase" generalterm –ignorethisword
Google search of Amazon:
site:amazon.com "keyword" "exact phrase" generalterm –ignorethisword

I've recently been trying out digital copies of reference books on fiction, e.g. Association of Assistant Librarians Children's Fiction Index (Seventh Edition),
Fantasy Literature for Children and Young Adults: An Annotated Bibliography (Third Edition),
and The Ultimate Book Guide: Over 600 Great Books for 8-12s
- the kind of books that have lists / indexes of various authors and books, preferably with brief descriptions.
Just sharing in case anyone else finds these useful - and if anyone knows of similar books, please do post them here!
Yes, annotated bibliographies like that are incredibly useful. I come across them sometimes on googlebooks. They sometimes are available as free ebooks via google play, or something. I try to remember to bookmark them when I find them.
For UK and Irish books, the British National Bibliography, which 'lists books and journal titles published or distributed in the United Kingdom and Ireland since 1950', might be a useful resource.I'm finding it not as easy to use as WorldCat (any tips appreciated!) but I've come across titles that didn't come up during similar WorldCat searches.
Kaion wrote: "- local library: If you took the book from your local library, maybe the library still has it, or it may be in your check-out record. Use the online catalog, or ask in person, what have you. (e.g. Chicago Public Library)"As a public librarian, I wanted to comment on this bit from the OP. As a general rule, libraries do not keep a history of what users check out. This would be seen as a privacy issue and libraries do not want to be put in the position of having to turn over a list of what a person has checked out in the past to law enforcement, angry parents, etc. so we don't keep that information.
Some libraries DO have an option in their online catalog where you can turn on checkout history and it will keep a list of what you have checked out, but that information will be visible only to you, not to the librarians, and it will only track books you've checked out after turning it on (so it's not going to retroactively tell you what you checked out before).
That said, please do ask at your local library if you're trying to identify a book you've checked out before. We're happy to try and help!
EDITED 2/4/22 to add: I should say, a lot of libraries don't keep checkout records. Apparently some do, despite the conflict with privacy ethics. Check with your local library, I guess.

SuperTuxKart360(Brigham) wrote: "Librarys don't have check-out records because it is against the law. It is against the law to divulge them without either consent or a court order, which is why many libraries choose not to retain the records or not to make them available to users. If checkout history is enabled on your account at the library, it is just so you personally can see what you've checked out.

Question! I'm looking for a certain book but i only have a vague idea of genre. Mostly i only remember a scene. Yikes! I know. I've read the book, I'm pretty sure, but cannot find it in my read list. I've searched lists, groups, tags, googled...everything i could think of but its not helpful that i only know for sure of 1 scene. A long scene but only 1. Can i still create an unsolved thread?
Sure, just do your best . "Adult fiction" will do in a pinch for genre, or even something to the effect of "Adult-probably-fiction-but-possibly-a-memoir." Just be sure to include the little plot details you do remember.
Avoid spoilers in the header, but make sure that your header has some distinguishing information (if every header was something to the effect of "Help, I can't find this book!" or "looking for a YA romance I read in high school" we'd be lost) .
Include the timeframe in which you have read it. It doesn't have to be exact; a range of years is fine. Whether you read it in the 1970s versus the 2000s helps us search.
The moderators might get a tiny bit shirty with people who purposefully flaunt the rules, but if it's all you know they're glad to assist.
Awesome! That's why i wanted to ask before trying to post! Lol. I THINK what i remember should be specific enough but i wanted to ask to be sure first. Thanks!

Post-Civil War Fiction Naegleria Fowleri. I read a book around 2005 (between 2002-2008) that I bought from Costco. It was the author’s debut novel. He went by his first, middle, and last name. The book begins at a body of water, like a backyard watering hole kind of thing. One of the characters is a judge. One of the other characters works temporarily at a newspaper office. I believe this character is a former Confederate soldier who is angry about losing the Civil War. The central plot point is the brain eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri. It had a mystery to solve and I still remember who dunnit.

Jestress's Forgotten Books and Stories is a children's book blog that just helped me to find an obscure 70s picture book - the book reviews seem quite detailed and include pictures, and there are various themed lists, and links to other resources that might help.https://forgottenstoriesweb.wordpress...
The subreddit /rtipofmytongue has already been cited, but I want to emphasize it as it is a great place to search with keywords (which is priceless).
My tip is to use chatgpt (AI) with as many details as you want and it finds the book you're looking for 99% of the time

That is NOT a correct statement.
That is NOT a correct statement.
All great resources. But I think I’m probably in the “least likely to locate on my own” category. I read the book 45 years ago and don’t have a clue about the title or author. (Though I would probably remember either if I heard them.) I have searched exhaustively. And have just reinforced my belief that Google has become almost useless as a search engine. There’s extensive commentary about this, but between the sea of paid or artificially promoted results and biased algorithms, Google is a terrible and useless shadow of its once greatness. It is incredibly frustrating.
Good afternoon.I can't find an English book that talk about different landscapes in the world.
1) descriptive book - I don't think it has photos, its cover has light ribow colors.
I found it in an Italian Bookshop in the englisk books shelf in February 2023 and I forgot to take a photo of it.
I tried to look for it through google, with Italian and English keywords without succes.
I also asked to the librarian, but he didn'tfind it.
Have you ever seen a book like this in any bookshop?
Do you have any idea about it?
Thank you for your help.

I've never used it but the fact that they charge does sound familiar.

The around the world in 80 books group could be a useful place when you're looking for a translated book, or a book set in a specific country (ok, for countries like Australia and China there's still a lot to browse through...) https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
