Ha ha ha well I've heard people with a British/English accent try to imitate the way I talk (and I sound very American, lol) :) :)

One of my best friends went to an American school in Kazachastan, and she picked up and American accent! Today it was so funny she was trying to remember it! :DD

Depends. It's a real place, so you can't just avoid ever saying it because it sounds bad. When we're actually discussing the afterlife it's okay. But when used as a swear, or angrily saying "Go to ****," then yes I think it's wrong.

Douglas (littlepegleg) | 135 comments I have a question for you mods: If Jesus preached 'love your neighbor as yourself', then why did most of his disciples all die for preaching this message as well? Don't people want to be loved? Did they forget Jesus' message of love and start preaching hate? How did this travesty happen that innocent preachers were all killed for preaching a message of love?

message 190: by Sandy (last edited Dec 01, 2010 03:53PM) (new)

Sandy (sandycrow) | 373 comments Mod
Because people are selfish that way. And I don't know… the message of the gospel is more than that (obviously), and most people don't want to see their own sinfulness. Men love darkness rather than light. People don't die because of their beliefs, they die because no one wants to hear it.

Another possibility is that all humans are sinful, so the world can see our own hypocrisy. I mean, do any of us REALLY unconditionally put others before ourselves?

Aaaaand I could go on, but ultimately sin is the reason for death, and God allows it because:

um

um

um

Well, He is sovereign. We can't really understand providence. :)

message 191: by Douglas (new)

Douglas (littlepegleg) | 135 comments I love your answer, sandy. I've always held that people are sinful (according to the Bible) and they wouldn't hate someone because they said "God commands you to love your neighbor as yourself or else you are going to judgment", so it is interesting to see the disciples all being stoned or imprisoned for following Jesus.

Soooo, mods, what do you say?
Were the disciples martyred for preaching 'love your neighbor'? Did they forget Jesus' message of love and preach hatred?

I'm not a mod, but I think why the Christians who speak the truth get killed is because they cause people to examine themselves. No one likes to be corrected. Especially when a person feels like what they are doing isn't anyone's business or hurting anyone. It isn't easy examining oneself and changing especially when one has to give up something really enjoyable.

Chiara *♥☺Eat cheesecake.....NOW☺♥* wrote: "sorry I'm going off subject, but why does God harm innocent people, and make tsunamis, earthquakes and cancer happen?"

God doesn't DO that; he allows it. A lot of it is the result of our own sinful nature. And even seemingly innocent people (technically since we've all sinned no one is innocent)—the "good" Christians who lead "good" lives—can have troubles far worse than atheists. Often it's a test of our faith.

There is a kind lady in my church who recently found out she has cancer, and she posted verses of "It Is Well with My Soul" on Facebook when she heard the news. We don't know why God would allow this to happen, but we know that He has a plan that we don't necessarily understand. And when people are martyred for their faith, assuming they are true Christians, they go to be with the Lord! Away from all the hardships on earth, that is a true victory.

Sorry, I know I'm not a mod, but this verse came to mind.

John 15:18
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

The disciples didn't just preach love, they preached the gospel.
A big part of the gospel is love, but it's also about repenting your sin.

The world is made up of people. People are sinners and don't like to be told so.
Satan is in control of the world and influences people. Satan hates God and everything to do with Him.

The disciples were martyred, yes. But Jesus was crucified before that. And He didn't just preach love, He IS love.
And yet.

Kristen | 349 comments Sandy wrote: "Aaaaand I could go on, but ultimately sin is the reason for death, and God allows it because:

Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

God allows death because we sin. It's our consequence.

message 199: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (sandycrow) | 373 comments Mod
Yes, I do agree that death is a result of sin. I meant that God allows troubles to come to Christians and we don't know why :)

And I wouldn't say Satan is "in control" of the world, because God keeps him on a leash. It sounded like you meant the devil had the same absolute power as God.

A test of our faith, like in Job. And through our trials we can often bring glory to God. Like the healing of the blind man in…John, I think.
