I wonder if Alice will get out of Seaview Hospital alive. She's anorexic and refuses to see that she is. Due to the fact that she surrounds her self with not only fat people, but also the anorexics and bulimics, I think she feels safe at the hospital; like she belongs there. She doesn't seem to care if she ever leaves because at least she is still less than 90 pounds currently. I don't think she understands how dangerous it is to suffer from an eating disorder. It's really unhealthy to be 5'10'' and 90 pounds and I wonder why all she cares about is making sure her weight doesn't go over 90 by eating exactly 500 calories a day. When Alice goes to group discussions she needs to pay more attention to how food can make her ROBUST instead of focusing on how it's the enemy. I feel bad for her parents because they are in denial about Alice's anorexia and they only brought her into the hospital because she had a heart attack. I think that the whole family has some problems to sort out while hopefully ABETTING Alice to recover.
I was distracted very early into my reading when my cell phone kept vibrating. At first I tried to ignore it and keep reading because I really enjoyed the first part of this book; but I eventually found myself reading without actually comprehending because all I was focused on was who had texted me and it was then I knew the whole "ignoring my phone because it’s only on vibrate” plan that I had ORCHESTRATED wasn't going to work. I decided to just shut my phone off entirely for the half hour that I read the book because I knew there was no other way I was going to be able to focus and understand what I was reading.
The point of view that the author has currently is in first person. The mode of discourse is narration because Alice is telling her life story. Her tone within the story is melancholy, controlling, and critical. She sees her eating disorder in a positive denotation because she favors having control of her body and what goes into it. Everyone else around her sees her anorexia in a negative denotation. Her family and the psychiatrists at the hospital try to help her reach a healthy weight again while also helping her to understand the negative things like death or heart attacks that can come from anorexia.

I wonder why the book is sectioned off into characters. Stephenie separated the book by seeing things in Bella's point of view in fist person as well as Jacob Black in first person which confused me a bit at first but then I got used to it. I suppose she did it so we could see exactly what both characters felt while going through the same situation so I SCAFFOLD her in making that decision for the layout of the book. I liked that she did that because it helped me see what was going on in their heads and understand the raw emotion. I don't understand though why she didn't let us see Edward in first person. I believe that it would have better let us ENCOMPASS ourselves in his passion and emotion and love for Bella. I feel that it would have added to the book even more.
While reading the beginning of this book the time passed by so quickly to me because of the INCREMENTAL news and drama one right after the other and I caught myself not wanting to put the book down because I felt swallowed by all of the raw emotions and drama going on. I had to stop reading at one point because I caught myself getting lost at times and I had to keep going back and rereading things because of the whole character point of view change. I figured out that the best solution for myself not to get swallowed up in confusion was for me to stop reading after every character change and also summarize each section just so I can review it once I start reading again so I can remember where things left off the last time that I read.
The point of view that the writer has right now is unfavorable because she's using both negative denotations and negative connotations. Instead of Bella's pregnancy being a joyous occasion it's a terrifying accident because it's causing her to fall ill. Now Edward is terrified because his new bride is so ill and he blames himself for causing her so much harm even though it was an honest accident. The book is being narrarated by two characters over the same occurrances. The writer’s tone is one of everyone seeing the pregnancy a misfortune while Bella and Rosalie are the only two who will fight to keep the unborn child alive. The unborn child so far seems to be killing Bella from the inside out yet she still protects it due to her love for Edward and her maternal instincts.

The character of your book seems to have very low self- esteem and love for herself.I believe that the character isn't learning anything or applying herself to the program.I wonder why she is there did her family force her into the program? I agree in your choice to turn your cell phone off I find mine to be a big distraction as well that's why I do the same.I can't imagine why people like Alice see it positive to mal- nourish their bodies that way.

I like the way how Johah Lehrer(author)puts the reader into an intense scenario where I feel like I'm in the shoes of someone making this big life-changing decision. I also wonder why the author of the book had picked these specific professions to explain his stories. His intro starts off on a plane. The reader is in the shoes of a pilot and is about to land in the Tokyo airport as one of his enigines on the wing blows up into flames. The pilot is in a huge dilema. He doesn't know whether his other engine would UNDERPIN the rest of the plane or just fall into his grave. The only other option was to land as best as possible on the landing strip without crashing it. The pilot stays ROBUST knowing that this FEASIBLE attempt was very difficult but possible. I began to think of how he reacted to these very stressfull situations. If he wasn't successfull he would have killed many people. In the end it was only a pilot simulation for pilot training. Its suppose to train a pilot to think and react fast to do what he/she can to safe the passengers if a disaster were to occur in real life.
I was distracted by all the scientists and philosoers he mentioned, and how they had their own personal views about how a human reacts to a scenario or what a person might decide to do making their own choices. I started to think about how a human thinks because the author mentions how homo sapiens started to lie when they decide what is better for themselves. It confused me at first but i figured out that as a human we know how to reason with situations and choose to do things other than an animal or previous state of a human being.
The point of view seems to be 1st person. He explains these stories and scenarios to explain these situations that these people go through as a profession. The additude towards the book is persuasion. The book wants to show how homo sapiens react and think about how to appropriate information given to respond in a proper way. The tone is critically straight forward. His dictions shows positive and negative connotations to how a human thinks. He speaks about the facts and statistics and also the scientists and philosopher's opinions and theories of how a human thinks. He also elaborates the cause and effects of a human mind.

Ashlie, Good job with this post. The mind is pretty powerful huh? It sounds like this is a very psychological book.
Good for you for turning off the cell phone. It is hard to do, but once you do, it can be liberating as well.

Nadia,
I really like it when the chapters are separated by characters. For me, it pulls me into a book.
Be sure you discuss all that is required. Here, you missed "mode of discourse."
Otherwise, good job.

Justin, nice job with this post. It can be confusing when authors make references to people/things/events with which we are unfamiliar. Then, you have to decide if it is worth figuring out the reference or just move on.

So the mode of discourse is . . .and explain a bit. If you do this, I will revise grade.

The mode of discourse is narration, the book is always speaking in first person. Its always Bella or Jacob telling the reader what is occurring at the time.
