Deception Point pages 1-146

I like the way the author writes his books. He has a specific METHODOLOGY with each of his books. They generally have small chapters and each chapter focuses on a specific character through their point of view. I really like how he UNDERPINS his stories with real life facts to support his fiction. I've read two other Dan Brown books, and I really liked those qualities in those books as well. So far I'm enjoying Deception Point, it's a fast read. It took about one hundred pages to finally reach the main point of the story, and there was a lot of build up, but it wasn't boring. I was really surprised when it finally did reach that point though. It was something very unexpected and it made it difficult to put the book down.

I started to think about that author’s other books while I was reading. This has always been a problem for me when it comes to reading. My thoughts easily stray away from the book, and while I'm still reading the words my mind doesn't comprehend what my eyes are looking at. While reading this book I made a point to focus on the book in front of me and not the thoughts constantly floating around in my head. While reading I noticed words I didn't know the definition of, but I inferred their meaning through context clues. I've narrowed my focus while reading, especially with this book, because I have a history of letting my mind wander.

Point of view is the author’s position on the subject and their attitude towards it. In the book “Deception Point”, it appears that the author’s position is favorable towards the subject he is discussing. It’s difficult to tell with this book because he writes the story through the standpoint of numerous characters. I could tell his point of view through the verbs he uses when describing the situation, they have a positive connotation. Mode of discourse is the author’s purpose in writing a nonfiction piece. In this particular case, “Deception Point” is a fictional story. Although, I believe that the author’s mode of discourse is description. He intends to show what something looks like or feels like, and so far the author EXEMPLIFIES by using very vivid examples and descriptions to enhance the reader’s visualization of the story.

Response to Tasha:
I’m really interested to know what your book is about. You mentioned a religiously confused orthodox Jew, and it makes me wonder where the story will lead. I wonder especially because it’s a humorous book. Because when it comes to confusion with religion, it’s not usually a funny thing. I hope you enjoy it though.

Luis | 8 comments I like the way the author starts talking about what is the story is going to be about. Well in the first pages I figure out that the dog has been murdered by someone and was found dead by Christopher the main character in his neighbor’s lawn name Mrs. Shears. Mrs. Shears told him that he killed the poodle name Willington, but it’s not true until now it hasn’t reveal actually who did it. The policeman came through the gate with TEMERITY toward Christopher. As the case was on Christopher’s consequences INCREMENTED because he then hit the police man because he didn’t want to be grab. So I hope more mystery to come up in the next pages.

I figured out that the main character Christopher a kid that was always curious about new mysteries that happen around him. Through the story I noticed that he liked being detective in finding always the answers even if they tell him to stop getting into more trouble. His METHODOLOGY was to go back to the original place where Willington was found dead. Also when I was reading I kept having metacognitive thoughts throughout the book because I wanted to find out what was the boy going to do keep away from the case of the murdered dog or go on to find the killer.

The point of view is base of one boy who is explaining what is going on his life and describing the character’s description in the story. The point view also in this story is that not many people care what children say and what happens to dogs like in this story the dog was kill and police didn’t do an investigation. I say that people listen to adults only because they seem mature and a child may seem playful wanting only attention for unimportant point. This story describes all characters and their description and tells what point of view readers take to our perspective of how they act in the story. For example Mrs. Shears in the first page seems to be an emotionless.

I seem interest in this book because i like books where I get stuck and figure out what they mean. Also I See that you kept obtaining thoughts into your mind when reading and I believe its good because you start to think of maybe what is goin got happen next. So since you have nice interpretation when it comes to words or new concepts i believe you can read it with ease.

Alex,

Good job with this post. I am glad that you are so involved in your book. In the next post, give us more details about the book's plot. I was wondering about what was happening in your book.

Tasha, This book does sound interesting. I read and reread that quote about belief and deception. It made me think. Great use of vocab.

Luis, don't forget to cover all topics in part III---here, I don't see anything about mode of discourse. Also, please provide the link and number of page #s at start. Thanks.

I really like how the author choose to start of the book. Just by reading the first sentence of the book got me hooked to continue reading it. I really like how the author goes from past to present with telling the story. Kaye Gibbons does a great job EXEMPLIFING the descriptions of the characters and the situation. I really enjoy the southern lingo that she bring to the characters because it helps me understand how it was back then. Sometimes I judge a book by its cover and by the look of this cover I thought it was going to be boring but its really interesting and carries out a lot of emotions. As I continued to read it I started to get a VISCERAL that something big was about to happen which it did when her mother passed away after taking many pills. There’s a huge sense of DISSONANCE ever since Ellen’s mother passed away. Right off the shelf I did not think this book was going to start off with the way it has and I am really glad that I didn’t judge.

I was distracted by the television and my cuisine playing with her dog and her screaming, whistling and talking out loud. I usually like to read out loud or at least enough for me to be able to hear my voice because I feel that it helps me understand better but her voice and the Television kept throwing me off and a lot of times I found myself rereading what I had already read just so I could understand it better. The pain of my stomach also contributed to my distraction I guess I needed a snack. But after a while I kind of got used to the distractions and just continued reading. Especially since I knew I was getting to a good part my mind just kind of wondered off.

The point of view that is used in this story is through the eyes of Ellen Foster a young girls raised by her mother who is very ill and weak and her father who is a drunk and demanding. As for the authors point of view I think that she is favorable to Ellen and I can see the point she is trying to make as to why Ellen really dislikes her father and all the struggles she goes through it also gives us a sense of how black and whites lived back in the south. I think that the predominate mode of discourse that the author uses for this is narrative because it tells a story about a young girl living in the south loosing a parents and going into a foster home where she goes from having nothing to having more than she expected.

Response to Luis:
It really seems like you have a book you enjoy reading, and I think its funny how you say sometimes it makes you feel like you’re a detective because the same things happened to me. When I’m reading a book or just about anything I always like to predict what’s going to happen and most of the times I’m correct. It happens to me a lot not only with book but with movies as well its like I wrote the script or the book. It seems like your book is filled with a lot of conflict right from the beginning which I enjoy just as mine is as well.
