well I just hate bad authors who are mean

message 102: by Laura (new)

Laura | 911 comments How is an author mean? Like kills characters for no apparent reason?

(oops. I sound like a mean author.)

Nope. Not at all. I don't think most scars are cliche. :D

message 104: by [deleted user] (new)

well how many times have yhou read a character has a scar on his face

message 105: by Annemarie, hi (new)

Annemarie Carlson (annielawlz) | 3393 comments Mod
A few times, its not that common. Its cool when characters have a back story with their scar.

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

well like its cliche because of the countless movies its been in more than books but there are a lot of books with scarred faces

Jordan, The Picture Magician (aka Probie) (thepicturemagicianakaprobie) | 2218 comments and they're there for no reason

message 108: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah

message 109: by Krys (new)

Krys (krisslee) | 5015 comments Mod
It really depends, I think. If there is an original story behind the scar it's alright, but if no explination is given or if there isn't any originality too it, then you can call it cliche. I kinda think that scars can actually be important for some characters in stories, especially if it builds personality behind them.

message 110: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah but in movies it like always cliche

message 111: by Krys (new)

Krys (krisslee) | 5015 comments Mod
Not always.

message 112: by [deleted user] (new)

9 times out of 10

message 113: by Krys (new)

Krys (krisslee) | 5015 comments Mod
It depends.

message 114: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Depends on the story line I think.

message 116: by Laura (new)

Laura | 911 comments So we all agree that unexplained scars are cliche?

message 117: by Laura (new)

Laura | 911 comments Yes. That means yours is not cliche!!!!!

Jordan, The Picture Magician (aka Probie) (thepicturemagicianakaprobie) | 2218 comments MOST scars are cliche, not all of them.

message 119: by LaNaria (last edited Mar 28, 2010 01:16PM) (new)

LaNaria (laenae) | 43 comments A character in my story has a giant x on his left cheek. his back story's a little complecated though.

Jordan, The Picture Magician (aka Probie) (thepicturemagicianakaprobie) | 2218 comments whats the backstory? Enlighten me.

message 121: by LaNaria (last edited Mar 28, 2010 02:25PM) (new)

LaNaria (laenae) | 43 comments My character's name is Tallis, his father Marinel is an important figure his mother was this man's maid. After the death of Marinel's wife Tallis's mother becomes Marinel's mistress. When his mother becomes pregnant she manages to hide Tallis. When she is pregnant again she is discovered and Marinel is disgusted and carves an x into Tallis's left cheek then leaves baby Tallis and his younger sister Talli in the woods to die. (Clearly they don't die)

message 122: by LaNaria (last edited Mar 28, 2010 02:26PM) (new)

LaNaria (laenae) | 43 comments yes I was right complecated...

message 123: by Hannah (last edited Mar 28, 2010 03:20PM) (new)

Hannah | 954 comments I don't think scars are cliche. In every book I've read about a character with a scar, there's always a good reason for it. And in my own story, Revived, one of the characters has a scar... But there's a reason for it, and it's not a random reason, either. It has something to do with the plot.

message 124: by Summer (new)

Summer | 193 comments Kriss wrote: "I hate it when they never give me any description about what the character looks like. Or if they never give a description of their eyes >:/"

Has anybody read the Maze Runner? There is absolutely no character discription! It drives me mad!

message 125: by Laura (new)

Laura | 911 comments I put it on my to-read list, and I probably will get around to reading it.

message 126: by Summer (new)

Summer | 193 comments You could change up the scar. I think their cliche but in kind of a cool way. Where would Inigo Montoya be without the two scars running down his cheeks?

message 127: by Krys (new)

Krys (krisslee) | 5015 comments Mod
I actually think it's really pretty cool when a character gets a scar during the story instead of before it's actually written. Like in the past... Especially if they have it and it changes their character or reminds them of something they've done/sacrificed.

message 128: by Summer (last edited Mar 28, 2010 08:26PM) (new)

Summer | 193 comments Yeah! I like that to, to a sertain digree. Permanent injuries bother me though. Like in this one book she lost some fingers and it made me so depressed. I don't know why. I guess it was because she was in to music and she couldn't play anymore. Anyways, when it's on their face or something it doesn't bother me so much.

message 129: by Krys (new)

Krys (krisslee) | 5015 comments Mod
The book Fire? Yeah... But still. I thought it was interesting she had to adapt to it and that it left a mark on her. BUT ARCHER SHOULDN'T HAVE DIED!!! ARCHER WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THE SERIES!!! D8

cool backstory!

message 132: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) i hate characters who are my age, and don't say like. I mean, how many of you have met someone who is a child/preteen/teenager and doesn't say 'um,' or 'like', or 'er,' or even 'so...'? Honestly, it's like we're all amazingly articulate.

Jordan, The Picture Magician (aka Probie) (thepicturemagicianakaprobie) | 2218 comments well, the computer always yells at you for doing that, so i dont.

message 134: by Laura (new)

Laura | 911 comments LIKE, HAHA!!!!

message 144: by Gabry (new)

Gabry (gabyhd) I actually have a scar, cept its on my chest, because I had to have surgery, but on another note, you are right about the Maze Runners, no description at all,
but I like imagining on my own.

message 145: by Jordan, The Picture Magician (aka Probie) (last edited Apr 02, 2010 05:01AM) (new)

Jordan, The Picture Magician (aka Probie) (thepicturemagicianakaprobie) | 2218 comments i have a scar on my leg from a time when i was in hawaii. I was swinging on a vine rope and i went too low and hit my legs on the riverbed. I cut a gash in my leg like three inches long.

What happened to your chest!?

message 150: by Gabry (new)

Gabry (gabyhd) Oh, heart surgery. Though the funny thing I got from it is: It looks like a face, well if you connect stuff. But anyways, I agree with the weak girl characters.
