Trish (trishhartuk) | 3676 comments I'm thinking this is a Librarian question, not a moderator question.

I've just read Beowulf: A New Translation. It is what it says on the tin - a translation of the Medieval epic, Beowulf. One which, while it's a new interpretation, does still go back to the ancient Old English sources.

However, for some reason, all the editions of this particular translation seem to be in their own category, rather than as editions under https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio.... Moreover, it isn't filed at all with the First Published date the others have (900).

I was wondering why this edition has been treated differently, when the majority of the other translations are filed together (the Tolkien one is an exception, but that has something else in with it, so it isn't a direct comparator). Should it be reunited with it's kin?

And even if it shouldn't be reunited with the other editions, surely it should, at least, have the first published 900 attribution?

It's not strictly a translation and places a different emphasis than the original.

"'The author of the crazy-cool Beowulf-inspired novel The Mere Wife tackles the Old English epic poem with a fierce new feminist translation that radically recontextualizes the tale.' —Barbara VanDenburgh, USA Today"

As an adaptation, this does not belong with other translations that attempt to stay true to the original story.

Right.

Thing is, it's not an adaption in the way the Mere Wife is (which sounds cool enough that I want to read it). It's a modern language translation of the Old English, but perhaps with a little more emphasis on the female characters on the rare occasions they actually appear - a paragraph here, a paragraph there for most of them, except Grendel's mother. In the introduction, she even goes into detail about how she made the translation decisions.

Ho hum. Although now I feel I want to go back and read one of the older versions again, to see if I'm misremembering. :-)

Just to update, I've now read the Francis Barton Gummere edition, for comparison, and apart from the dragon being male in that one, and female in the new translation, they match pretty well - even a lot of the alliteration and kennings, allowing for Victorian vs. modern language. Nothing's been added in the new one except for the translators choices of language, and I can't see anything that was taken away. So I honestly believe it is a translation, not an adaption.

Margie | 271 comments Hi, I'm currently reading a Kindle compilation:
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: A Trilogy of Five.

I will be reading this as 5 separate books for the Seasonal Challenge (probably only #1 and #2 in Fall 2021).

However, when I follow the Challenge rules and select the top MMPB for individual books, there are no ISBN numbers. Which versions should I use to claim for the challenge?

Thanks

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments I have an ARC in hand of
Olga Dies Dreaming by Xóchitl González
Expected publication is Jan 2022

My book has 373 pages. And I don't see an edition that matches that, though I'm thinking that perhaps the one I linked to is supposed to be the ARC.

Thanks in advance.

Sarah | 1804 comments Please could someone add page numbers to Tortilla Flat? I have the book in hand and it has 176 pages.

WorldCat says 175 pages - the last numbered page is 175 but there is a half page of text on what would be page 176 if it was numbered. I leave that to a librarian decision which is the correct number to add. I suspect WorldCat will win...

You can add book/author in the post box to search for the book and select the specific edition The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

or
format a link - change the { to square brackets [

{book:The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy|386162} where the number used is the number in the specific edition's url
....goodreads.com/book/show/386162.Th...

if you need to add a cover
{bookcover:The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy|386162}

It seems to me that you do not need to worry about the ISBN if you are looking for page counts. I would use the first book listed under MMPB as long as it shows pages.

Since I can use another edition for page numbering, I guess it doesn't really matter.

The publisher of my ARC is Flatiron books (same as for the hardcover 1st edition).

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments I was looking up HOUSE OF BROKEN ANGELS and the search results show two entries:
The House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea
and
The House of Broken Angels by Urrea Luis Alberto

Can someone combine these records?

I realize that some person in their eagerness created a new author for this book (the second one listed) by showing Urrea as the first name rather than the last name.

Any way to delete that obviously erroneous author?
