Hi, I've been directed here in the hope that somebody might be able to kindly solve my problem. i am brand new to the group and to Goodreads and I was very keen to be able to do this challenge.

The book of collated letters published as 'Letters from Father Christmas' by J.R.R. Tolkein, written to his children every Christmas between 1920 and 1943 are on my list of Christmas reads this week.

There is an edition under the Goodreads list 'Letters To and From' on pg 2, top of page, but it is a short version of only 80 something pages.

Here are the details of that item:

format: Hardcover
Published October 1st 1976 by Houghton Mifflin

My edition is 192 pages 'Letters from Father Christmas' by J.R.R. Tolkein. Letters from Father Christmas

The book you cite does not appear as an edition of the book on the list. If you believe that it is the same book, I suggest asking a librarian to combine the books.

I am sure that it is the same book, just maybe a hardcover and abridged version of it. It is also the version that has been published as translations in other languages, but the original letters were certainly written in English.

Would you be able to solve this for me? I have the book ready to go and I'm keen to use it for this task as it is the perfect theme for this time of year. Thanks in anticipation of your help,

Jemima, the two books you referenced above cannot be combined with each other. They are not the same book.

The Father Christmas Letters is an abbreviated version...not the full book. This book is only listed on Winter Themed Vintage/Antique Books in Listopia.

Letters from Father Christmas covers letters written from 1920-1943. This book is not listed on any Listopia list.

The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, which is on the task list is correspondence about his creation of Middle - earth.

I was unable to verify the Oct 20th date for sure. Worldcat only gives the year of 2016. The publisher, believe it or not, gives October 5, 2017. Amazon states 1865!

Is "Notes on a Scandal" a subtitle? It is bracketed on the main page and I assumed it was, but I need an opinion from someone who knows more than I do about it.

Andy, the brackets used are not the type GR librarians use for series titles and subtitles usually follow a colon. That said, I looked at the cover. The bracketed portion is bracketed with that same type of bracket on the cover...and is found under the larger title. Some of the other editions have the bracketed portion following a colon. (Of course, the movie versions have the two portions reversed in their treatment!)

Overall, I think the bracketed portion is a subtitle.

I read the kindle edition, borrowed via kindle unlimited, and didn't realize the entries for the physical editions didn't have pages listed. I'm quite sure it's more than 100 pages, probably more in the vicinity of 200. (Oh these old pulp paperbacks!)
