Stacie (shorty_320) | 1335 comments Can I get the page count corrected for The Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holidays. The main book page says it has 352 pages, but I'm holding the hardcover in my lap right now and it has 388 pages.

Thanks!

Vicky (librovert) | 240 comments Julie wrote: "Mortal Fear is listed as 622 pages, but it is really over 700!"

Julie, is there any sort of additional material at the beginning or end of this book that would explain the difference in page numbers? As a rule, librarians use WorldCat to confirm pages over Amazon, because Amazon tends to count all pages (including blank pages, titles pages, appendices etc) and WorldCat/Goodreads does not. WorldCat says 622 for this book.

Stacie, this is a similar situation to Julie's. I've updated it to 375 which is the last page of text before the Acknowledgements and Indexes start on page 377.

Thanks for replying Vicky. Actually, the paperback I checked out from the library (ISBN 978-0-451-18041-4) has the Prologue starting at page 1 and the final page of the actual story as 704. None of the other pages (blank, publishing info, list of authors other books, etc.) are included in that number. If Amazon counts those types of pages, that's would explain why their page count is 720, but actual pages of the story itself is 704. Strange.....

Since you have the book in front of you, I'll take your word for it. I updated it to 704.

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) | 94 comments It will get changed back at some point as librarians, publishers etc typically count acknowledgements, indices, and any other page with text on it in the page count.

Here is the Goodreads blurb on page numbering:

This field is for entering the number of pages of a book. The number of pages in a book is meant to include all content except for advertisements and preview chapters for other books. Included end material may include acknowledgments, afterwords, appendices, glossaries, indexes, notes, and suggested discussion questions.

Introductory material paged using roman numerals is not included in the total page count.

Books already in the database often already have page numbers, and these are occasionally incorrect. These can be corrected, but only if you have the exact book with a matching ISBN, or from WorldCat and other sites with reliable page numbering.

Most ebook formats do not have a fixed number of pages since the pagination adjusts for screen size. For PDF specific editions, or any other fixed page ebooks, the normal paging rules may be used.

For audio books, number of hours should be used in lieu of number of pages, when that information is known.

This is an FYI for all those requests here that the page counts should reflect those pages even if the story ends sooner and that changes to page count should only be made if the record is indeed off not where the story ends. That is the way all the books in Goodreads should be so you should make sure before changing them that that is the case.

Julie If that is how they arrive at the actual page count, then my copy of Mortal Fear should have been more than the actual number of pages in the story. But for some reason it was listed as only 622, when the actual story was 704. Even Worldcat has it listed as 622 pages when this is clearly incorrect.

Maybe it was just a typo or something. I'm looking it up by ISBN number, so it's not a case of me referencing the wrong edition or anything. Really strange.....

Thanks for the information though Mary Beth. That explains why the page numbers always seem a little off to me!

message 965: by Mary Beth (last edited Jan 02, 2014 01:54PM) (new)

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) | 94 comments That is strange and it seems it would be incorrect if you have the story in hand and it has way more pages. That would be a legitimate change!! It is odd that WorldCat would have the wrong #of pages but they can make errors too and since everyone uses their numbers it could easily get picked up as that.

I checked the publisher's site for that version and they have it listed as 720 so I am going to change it to that.

Janice | 713 comments Will a librarian please combine an author's profile and books for me if possible? Douglas Chadwick and Douglas H. Chadwick are the same author. He has many books, but not all of them show up if you just look up his name one way or the other. I'm currently readingThe Wolverine Way. He uses his middle initial on the book cover, so I think that would be the one to keep. Thanks

Pamela Su (thebluebaroness) | 247 comments Ok, Something Shady is listed as being 1 page.

So I went to Amazon, and it's listed as 1 page. -_-

I don't have my original paperback since it's been years since I've read it and my books tend to wander. It's definitely NOT one page! LOL

Google Books search listed below:

Title Something Shady
Author Pamela Morsi
Publisher Jove Books, 1995
ISBN 0515116289, 9780515116281
Length 326 pages

Can this info be used instead of the 1 page? :)

Jennifer W | 466 comments I was looking for a book published in 2000 and Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman is listed as "first published in 2000". I don't know when it was first published, but being that it deals with the Sept 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and Tillman joining the US military afterward, I'm pretty positive that it wasn't first published in 2000. ;)

Edit: Amazon as the hardcover published in 2009.

message 993: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments I have a question-

This book---
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

My copy has 318 pages-
They put 320--- because there is a page about
the author and the next page is a page about
other books she has written-

Is 318 correct??? Do they have to count those
other 2 pages?

Thanks

message 994: by Fandury (new)

Fandury | 957 comments The page with info about the author should be included, but the page with the other books she has writen can be counted as advertisement, and that has to be excluded from the page count.

That would make this book 319 pages, and as that is also what World Cat says, I will change it accordingly.

Kathy G. | 1931 comments wait--- this is the one in my hand-
The Edge of Winter by Luanne Rice

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

Same picture-
it says unabridged
isbn: 9781415935828

I did see one that says (Lib) CD
Should it be set up that way???
And that one doesn't show the picture.

Can we fix it---
And add the picture---
and say unabridged? My copy says unabridged.

Thanks
