Here's an interesting quote from the second page of the article.

“If you want bookstores to stay alive, then you want to slow down this movement to e-books,” said Mike Shatzkin, chief executive of the Idea Logical Company, a consultant to publishers. “The simplest way to slow down e-books is not to make them too cheap.”

Barbara Elsborg But if they are expensive, won't that encourage more piracy?

History has shown that pricing has very little to do with piracy. Typically that is just a make-belief argument brought forth that has been proven wrong over and again.
