Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Everybody who is having this error, at least until the bug is fixed, you might consider using a browser other than IE. Firefox is good, and if you have a Mac, so is Safari. ETA: and for those of you who don't have dinosaur computers like mine, I've heard that Chrome is excellent.

message 103: by [deleted user] (new)

It's just nice to know i'm not alone..I can wait till Monday. The thought of installing a new browser makes me break out in a cold sweat!

message 104: by [deleted user] (new)

Firefox is a simple procedure; at least from what I remember. I use it on my iMac. I don't care for Safari. I haven't really tried Google Chrome, because I like Safari so much.

message 105: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I have an old Mac and I can't use Chrome. I usually use Safari; it's much faster for me than Firefox. But, I also have Firefox and Camino and a few other browsers installed.

It's a VERY easy process, and I find it helpful to have more than one regular browser. If one is causing a problem, it's easy to just temporarily switch to another.

Jeannette, Did you mean to say at the end of your last message that you like FF so much?

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I like Firefox. I did seem to contradict myself, but it was a typo. *sorry* (I think faster than I type, sometimes.) :)

I can't wait to get a new computer because I want to try out the Chrome browser!

Maude, I'm having the same problem. It seems to affect users who use Internet Explorer as their browser but Goodreads is aware of it and is working to fix it.

Google Chrome is working fine for me. My IE totally crashed two days ago.

Chrissie Lady OT Lavender, was it you that had a Kindle DX, you know that big Kindle? I sort of remember that was you? Maybe I am wrong!

message 117: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) I had a question about adding a review of a book. I enter books into my "currently reading" file, but when I finish it, and I want to add a review, I have to click out to something else, and then click back into "read". Is there a faster way?

message 118: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Well, there are several ways to add a review but you do have to manually move the book from currently reading to read, even if on status updates you've marked it as finished. I think however you do it, you do have to make the number of clicks you've mentioned, so I don't think there is a faster way to open up the review box.

Lorraine, If this is important to you, you can ask for it in the suggestions & questions folder at the Goodreads Feedback group (it's an official Goodreads group and appears on the groups page.) But, I'm not sure they can make it any faster than it already is.

message 119: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) Thanks, Lisa. I won't bother going any further, but just thought I might be missing a trick or something.

message 120: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I need some help. I have installed Google Chrome. However I get emails at all the places where I have left comments. However when I open an email it uses Internet Explorer Browser. So how do I get the emails on the Google Chrome Browser instead. Is it by making Google Chrome my default browser?

Alos I noticed that I have some of the email messages on the notification screen. But the items listed on the notification list are not exactly the same as my emails. I don't understand what items get onto my notifications list. Can I go the GR via Google Chrome and look at the notifications and in this way get all my emails? I want to read my emails using Google Chrome and yet I would prefer keeping Internet Explorer as my default browser since I have other stuff that is is important there.

What IS on my notification list. If I were gone from the computer for several days and didn't receive emails, how could I go to GR and get all the comments I had missed?

Does anybody understand me. This is so hard to explain.

message 121: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie, Somewhere on your computer or in Chrome there are preferences and yes you'll have to make Chrome your default broswer to have that happen. Maybe you can set it in your mail preferences if emails are not among what you want left on IE as the default?

I don't have Chrome (my computer can't handle it/my new one will be able to and I can't wait to try it) so I'll let others who know answer your questions.

I don't think you can have one browser as preference for some things and one for others, but I have a Mac (a six year old one at that) and maybe it's different with Windows.

Good luck. Hope you get it worked out.

I can answer your last question: For notifications, on Goodreads, go to the arrow at the very top right, to the right of your mini avatar, and right under inbox is notifications. If you click on notifications either there or on notifications on your mini profile on Goodreads' home page, they should be listed there. Does that help, Chrissie?

message 122: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lisa, thank you for the info about Google Chrome. I will look around for a way to get the emails in that rather than Internet Explorer. Google Chrome is much faster than Internet Esplorer BUT the text is no imrpvement. I need to make the letters darker/wider/bolder. I can get them big but they are too light still. I will continue looking around.

Concerning notifications. I know how to find them, but my question is what threads/comments are listed under notifications? I do not understand why I have anything there under notifications since I have on my profile under the email tab specified that I wanted emails. I do not have "only notifications" chosen anywhere! So why do I have threads and comments there under notifications? If I chose "notifications only" would this be a way of getting what I use to get via emails instead on my notification list? I do not think so? I think only a limited number are listed. If I were gone for several weeks I would get no emails and the notification list would not hold everything. Is this correct? I don't understand what comments are put in the notifications list. Please explain. And are there a limited number allowed to be listed or is there a timeperiod which cannot be exceeded. There must be some cut off, otherwise I would have zillions listed in my notification list. Am I more clear now?

message 123: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie, I have emails set too but get both. All members get online notifications, whether or not we want them. That might eventually change. But, if people specify they want online notifications, then they are not supposed to get emails, but I've heard they get some anyway. Obviously there are some kinks to work out.

RE #, I don't know. You can go and click more at the bottom, if that's an option, and figure that out easily.

I hardly ever look at online notifications but occasionally I've been grateful that I get them along with emails. When emails sometimes get backed up by hours or days, I can see notifications online and sometimes reply to another member; they can come in handy.

I do know that if after a member's groups on our profiles pages, you click on recent posts, every single post we've ever made (that hasn't been deleted) in groups or on reviews, do all show. We obviously have multiple pages of those.

Chrissie, I don't think I've answered all your questions but hopefully other members will chime in with what they know.

message 124: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Thanks Lisa, for all your help. It looks like the max number of notifications you can get is thirty.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Why the limit?

message 128: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I have left everything set for delivery via emails. This does mean I must continue using Internet Explorer when I read them. I am going to try Firefox also, then if I can convince my husband we sill set the default to the one we like best. The problem is that we have some essential icons on our desktop that demand Internet Explorer. I have to figure out how to keep Internet Explorer for those. Eventually I will figure it out.

Gundula, it could be set at a certain time period and I had thirty in that time period. All I know is that I had only thirty.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments I personally prefer Firefox.

message 130: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I think IE is the worst browswer; it certainly is for Macs. I like Safari a lot, but that is for Macs. I really want to try Chrome when I have a new computer. I really love Firefox; the only reason I use it less frequently than Safari is that it's a bit slower on my computer.

message 131: by Chrissie (last edited Jun 21, 2011 04:05AM) (new)

Chrissie I am going to install Firefox tondight. When I have determined which is best I will make that my default, as s long as I can figure out how to get the programs that must use Internet Explorer to remain functioning.

Would you guys say WHY you like a particular browser, or don't like another. I can see that IE is slower than Google Chrome. The font size and color is a bit better, but really only marginally. Even Google Chrome isn't dark enough. I think Google Chrome uses Times New Roman which is more easy to read than what IE uses.

Does anybody know if Firefow or Google Chrome has a way of setting the darkness or boldness of the print?

Susanna, it would be much better if the number of notifications were much larger. Then, I could use that rather than getting emails. As it is set up today, emails are essential if you leave comments all over the place and want to make sure you respond to resonses. I agree why only thirty. Has anybody tried counting how many they have? Does anyone have more than thirty? I am going to go check agian. Now I have 28, all of which are new. They are not the same as the emails I am receiving. There must be some other criteria that determines which comments end up here.

ETA Does anybody know of any browser that lets you choose thickness and or darkness of the print, not just the size?

message 132: by Jane (new)

Jane (flopsybunny) | 114 comments This is probably a daft question but how do you go about finding friends? Do you wait until people send you friend requests or do you approach people yourself. So far I have made one friend and I would love to have more.

message 133: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Jane, it is not a daft question at all! There are many ways to go about finding friends and you should do what you are most comfortable with. I approach it just like the real life by starting a conversation with someone either in a group setting or perhaps making a comment on a book review. If the person responds and you enjoy chatting with them, you can make the request. I think it's courteous to include a message with your request but not everyone does that. It's up to you. You can also choose to follow someone's reviews instead of friending them if you are feeling shy, don't want any personal interaction and just want to see what they are reading.

Another good tool to use is the compare books button you see on each person's profile. That will give you an idea of what books you have in common.

I hope that helps. Maybe others have more ideas.

message 134: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I've done it pretty much like you Lee. Getting to know people through posting. Also, following their reviews helps me get to know if I would like their book recommendations & makes it easier to approach them as a friend.

I also often use the compare books feature to see if we like the same books-especially my more eccentric choices.

And in the beginning, I relied a lot on the GR feature of suggested friends which you can access through your home page.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Ellie, now you have me curious about your "more eccentric choices" LOL!

message 136: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jane, I do what Lee and others do: get to know people via groups and comments on reviews. I also always send a note with friend requests. I also read members' profile pages carefully as some have what they're looking for in friends. For instance, some members are friends only with people they know in "real life" and some want as many friends as possible, and there are every variations in-between.

When I first joined Goodreads I remember I was very anxious to make friends. As time went on I realized that as long as I participated by writing reviews, commenting on others' reviews, and joining and participating in groups, that many friends came my way, either them asking me or me asking them, or a mutual unofficial request.

And, there are no daft questions, especially as far as Goodreads is concerned. Many things here are not obvious, and asking questions is sometimes necessary.

message 139: by [deleted user] (new)

When I started goodreads, I joined with a friend. Then I joined a few discussion groups, and that is where I met my first GR friends, either through chatting about a specific book, or just life in general. Eventually you start friending friends of friends! It's fun and organic, exactly like what Lisa says: More will come.

What is really fun is that I have friends who live all over the world: UK, Australia, Canada, US, Japan, Belgium, Brazil. I can book chat 24/7 if I want to. :D

message 144: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Yes, I've also loved meeting people and becoming friends with them, people from all over the U.S. and all over the world, people I'd never ever have met if not for Goodreads.

message 145: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jane (and all), The best way is to meet people and get to know them over time, and let it happen somewhat organically. The people I've friended here without knowing them first, I rarely then get to know them all that much better. That may be just my experience though.

message 146: by [deleted user] (new)

I just added 3 new friends in one day, and I think we are going to be great friends -- we all met through a mutual friend. So, every experience is different. And, just like all friendships, there is ebb and flow. Enjoy, Jane! :)

Carole Stallman (AngelCarole) I just came across this discussion topic and boy!!do I need all the advice I can get. I just sent 2 posts by mistake so I am totally lost here. Please give me some guidelines to go by to know how to participate in these discussions. Thanks. Carole

message 148: by [deleted user] (new)

You're posts were fine, Carole. I hope you understood my reply.

You can post on any of the threads, just like you did in this one. :) When you use the "reply" option, it copies a part of the post you are replying to, and puts it at the beginning of your new comment. If you reply to an "old" post, it will put your reply at the end of all the posts, to make it the "newest" post. So, it may lose the context of the reply, like yours did. Does this make sense? I'd love to help you, and make you feel welcome. This is a great group.

message 149: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Carole. Don't worry about making "mistakes" as there really aren't any. If you have specific questions there are many members here who will be glad to help.

I suggest taking a look at the various threads and posting if you would like to do so. As Jeannette said in message 148, if you click reply to a specific post, if you're replying to what that member said, the context will be clearer, but it's not at all required to do that.

I think if you look around and play around, you're likely to get the hang of things in this group and other groups, at members' reviews, etc.

We'll be happy to help if you have any other questions.

And, Welcome to this group!

message 150: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Hi, all of you...... I am back from Sweden!

I have been a member for ages. In the beginning I am not even sure if there were groups. What I did was to look at books that I enjoyed and read the reveiws of those who also enjoyed the same books. Originally, I joined to find good books, so I wanted friends who sort of liked the books I liked. THEN as we all started blabbing about books the friendships just sprouted.

DON'T be scared of making mistakes or asking questions. It is wonderful how we all help each other. I was so confused in the beginning that I cancelled a friend and then asked her for friendship alll over again.

You can also look at friends of friends.
