It's just nice to know i'm not alone..I can wait till Monday. The thought of installing a new browser makes me break out in a cold sweat!
Firefox is a simple procedure; at least from what I remember. I use it on my iMac. I don't care for Safari. I haven't really tried Google Chrome, because I like Safari so much.

It's a VERY easy process, and I find it helpful to have more than one regular browser. If one is causing a problem, it's easy to just temporarily switch to another.
Jeannette, Did you mean to say at the end of your last message that you like FF so much?
Yes, I like Firefox. I did seem to contradict myself, but it was a typo. *sorry* (I think faster than I type, sometimes.) :)

:-)
I can't wait to get a new computer because I want to try out the Chrome browser!
I use gmail, and google (of course). I love gmail; it has lots of great features. I think google wants to take over the universe! lol

I love gmail!!! And google.
I really like google chat, with video. I like the ability to send text message to someone's phone, too.

Maude, This is a known problem:

Maude, I'm having the same problem. It seems to affect users who use Internet Explorer as their browser but Goodreads is aware of it and is working to fix it.

same for me being new...but trying to catch up!

Google Chrome is working fine for me. My IE totally crashed two days ago.

Lorraine, If this is important to you, you can ask for it in the suggestions & questions folder at the Goodreads Feedback group (it's an official Goodreads group and appears on the groups page.) But, I'm not sure they can make it any faster than it already is.

Alos I noticed that I have some of the email messages on the notification screen. But the items listed on the notification list are not exactly the same as my emails. I don't understand what items get onto my notifications list. Can I go the GR via Google Chrome and look at the notifications and in this way get all my emails? I want to read my emails using Google Chrome and yet I would prefer keeping Internet Explorer as my default browser since I have other stuff that is is important there.
What IS on my notification list. If I were gone from the computer for several days and didn't receive emails, how could I go to GR and get all the comments I had missed?
Does anybody understand me. This is so hard to explain.

I don't have Chrome (my computer can't handle it/my new one will be able to and I can't wait to try it) so I'll let others who know answer your questions.
I don't think you can have one browser as preference for some things and one for others, but I have a Mac (a six year old one at that) and maybe it's different with Windows.
Good luck. Hope you get it worked out.
I can answer your last question: For notifications, on Goodreads, go to the arrow at the very top right, to the right of your mini avatar, and right under inbox is notifications. If you click on notifications either there or on notifications on your mini profile on Goodreads' home page, they should be listed there. Does that help, Chrissie?

Concerning notifications. I know how to find them, but my question is what threads/comments are listed under notifications? I do not understand why I have anything there under notifications since I have on my profile under the email tab specified that I wanted emails. I do not have "only notifications" chosen anywhere! So why do I have threads and comments there under notifications? If I chose "notifications only" would this be a way of getting what I use to get via emails instead on my notification list? I do not think so? I think only a limited number are listed. If I were gone for several weeks I would get no emails and the notification list would not hold everything. Is this correct? I don't understand what comments are put in the notifications list. Please explain. And are there a limited number allowed to be listed or is there a timeperiod which cannot be exceeded. There must be some cut off, otherwise I would have zillions listed in my notification list. Am I more clear now?

RE #, I don't know. You can go and click more at the bottom, if that's an option, and figure that out easily.
I hardly ever look at online notifications but occasionally I've been grateful that I get them along with emails. When emails sometimes get backed up by hours or days, I can see notifications online and sometimes reply to another member; they can come in handy.
I do know that if after a member's groups on our profiles pages, you click on recent posts, every single post we've ever made (that hasn't been deleted) in groups or on reviews, do all show. We obviously have multiple pages of those.
Chrissie, I don't think I've answered all your questions but hopefully other members will chime in with what they know.

Thanks for checking that, Chrissie. That's not very many. Too bad. Hopefully, my emails will continue to arrive!

That's a bit silly in my opinion.

Gundula, it could be set at a certain time period and I had thirty in that time period. All I know is that I had only thirty.

Would you guys say WHY you like a particular browser, or don't like another. I can see that IE is slower than Google Chrome. The font size and color is a bit better, but really only marginally. Even Google Chrome isn't dark enough. I think Google Chrome uses Times New Roman which is more easy to read than what IE uses.
Does anybody know if Firefow or Google Chrome has a way of setting the darkness or boldness of the print?
Susanna, it would be much better if the number of notifications were much larger. Then, I could use that rather than getting emails. As it is set up today, emails are essential if you leave comments all over the place and want to make sure you respond to resonses. I agree why only thirty. Has anybody tried counting how many they have? Does anyone have more than thirty? I am going to go check agian. Now I have 28, all of which are new. They are not the same as the emails I am receiving. There must be some other criteria that determines which comments end up here.
ETA Does anybody know of any browser that lets you choose thickness and or darkness of the print, not just the size?

Jane, it is not a daft question at all! There are many ways to go about finding friends and you should do what you are most comfortable with. I approach it just like the real life by starting a conversation with someone either in a group setting or perhaps making a comment on a book review. If the person responds and you enjoy chatting with them, you can make the request. I think it's courteous to include a message with your request but not everyone does that. It's up to you. You can also choose to follow someone's reviews instead of friending them if you are feeling shy, don't want any personal interaction and just want to see what they are reading.
Another good tool to use is the compare books button you see on each person's profile. That will give you an idea of what books you have in common.
I hope that helps. Maybe others have more ideas.

I also often use the compare books feature to see if we like the same books-especially my more eccentric choices.
And in the beginning, I relied a lot on the GR feature of suggested friends which you can access through your home page.

When I first joined Goodreads I remember I was very anxious to make friends. As time went on I realized that as long as I participated by writing reviews, commenting on others' reviews, and joining and participating in groups, that many friends came my way, either them asking me or me asking them, or a mutual unofficial request.
And, there are no daft questions, especially as far as Goodreads is concerned. Many things here are not obvious, and asking questions is sometimes necessary.
When I started goodreads, I joined with a friend. Then I joined a few discussion groups, and that is where I met my first GR friends, either through chatting about a specific book, or just life in general. Eventually you start friending friends of friends! It's fun and organic, exactly like what Lisa says: More will come.
And you will meet some amazing people here. I've made what I now consider some of my best friends on Goodreads!
Me, too! :) I've met two of them in person, too.
What is really fun is that I have friends who live all over the world: UK, Australia, Canada, US, Japan, Belgium, Brazil. I can book chat 24/7 if I want to. :D

I just added 3 new friends in one day, and I think we are going to be great friends -- we all met through a mutual friend. So, every experience is different. And, just like all friendships, there is ebb and flow. Enjoy, Jane! :)

You're posts were fine, Carole. I hope you understood my reply.
You can post on any of the threads, just like you did in this one. :) When you use the "reply" option, it copies a part of the post you are replying to, and puts it at the beginning of your new comment. If you reply to an "old" post, it will put your reply at the end of all the posts, to make it the "newest" post. So, it may lose the context of the reply, like yours did. Does this make sense? I'd love to help you, and make you feel welcome. This is a great group.

I suggest taking a look at the various threads and posting if you would like to do so. As Jeannette said in message 148, if you click reply to a specific post, if you're replying to what that member said, the context will be clearer, but it's not at all required to do that.
I think if you look around and play around, you're likely to get the hang of things in this group and other groups, at members' reviews, etc.
We'll be happy to help if you have any other questions.
And, Welcome to this group!

I have been a member for ages. In the beginning I am not even sure if there were groups. What I did was to look at books that I enjoyed and read the reveiws of those who also enjoyed the same books. Originally, I joined to find good books, so I wanted friends who sort of liked the books I liked. THEN as we all started blabbing about books the friendships just sprouted.
DON'T be scared of making mistakes or asking questions. It is wonderful how we all help each other. I was so confused in the beginning that I cancelled a friend and then asked her for friendship alll over again.
You can also look at friends of friends.
