We are a self-selecting friendly group. :-)

message 52: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I like the friendly-people idea too. I had actually been thinking of something like that. So, why not that and similar tags?! Or friendly or friendly-members. Friendly might do it.

Is is definity the people that make this group most of what it is.

message 53: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie BUT what do you do with tags? Do you search for an interesting group by its tag? I don't get tags at all...... this is nursery school stuff I guess.

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

You know what I like about this group (second to the friendly people) is that we have no formal book discussions. Everyone just puts books up and we talk about them in whatever direction we like or don't). Is there a way to convey the informality of the group with a tag?

message 55: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I think it would also be a great idea to add some literary tags, like "chick lit" "historical fiction" etc. I like the friendly people idea as well, but what about a really easy tag such as "comfort literature" (I mean that's what this group is about).

message 56: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie It is just that comfort literature is so different to everyone. I shouldn't belong here according to that "tag. But you are probably right Gundula!! What about informal discussions". I love them b/c I don't like the pressure of reading books at a particular time. In the froup there is always someone interested in a given topic any time.

message 57: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I like the idea of an "informal discussions" tag, that sure takes the pressure off.

message 58: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, I'm not sure, but the informal word could be a tag I suppose.

Gundula, That's a good idea and I'll leave it up to Lee, but I'm afraid we'd run out of room. We like so, so, so many different genres, plus we might leave out one a potential member would be interested in, one we haven't thought of yet. I'm going to add "informal" for now. Wish we could do opposites: opposite of bookclub. ;-)

message 59: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lee added two good ones:

nostalgic-reads

relaxing-reads

message 60: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I like those, Lee. It will be easier for people to find those types of books that have been recommended if they have their own space.

message 61: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Okay, I've also added the tags "friendly" and "discussion group".

message 62: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Chrissie, to answer your question, yes the tags are used in the search function to find groups.

message 63: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) So now, when members search for groups, in addition to keying in the words comfort and reads (and maybe words within our group?), they'll find our group if they've also keyed in words that match our tag words.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

I added tags to the group I co-mod, but search for groups doesn't find us. Is there a step I am missing. Frustrating when something seems straightforward and I manage to make it difficult! Help, please! :)

message 65: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, There's probably a caching issue. It may take a few days for entries to catch up.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Lisa. I rejoined the Moderator's group (or I requested to be allowed to).

message 67: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette wrote: "Thanks, Lisa. I rejoined the Moderator's group (or I requested to be allowed to)."

Lori, does all the requests. You'll be accepted. All mods and co-mods are accepted.

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, thanks. Remember how I said I reduced a few of my groups that I wasn't really active in. Well, I rejoined them in the past two days. I just get little fits of tidying.....

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette wrote: "Yes, thanks. Remember how I said I reduced a few of my groups that I wasn't really active in. Well, I rejoined them in the past two days. I just get little fits of tidying....."

Well, it's always good to reevaluate to see whether or not to keep or not keep them.

message 70: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lee, guess was right!

message 71: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments I was wondering if there are any particular rules about what images you can use for your profile?

message 72: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Brenda, that's a very good question! I don't know the answer but I think you can use anything as long as it's not infringing upon copyrighted material. I'm just guessing though. Maybe someone else will have a better idea.

message 73: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Brenda, Yes, make sure it is not copyrighted, and nudity is also not allowed. I think that's about it.

message 74: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments Okay, thanks that is what I thought too but wasn't sure.

message 75: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Lee, I accidently hit something that took me off Goodreads - they say I am not a member. I was able to get back here. Can you fix this for me. Maude

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Maude,

Wow, you got wiped out! At the very bottom of the page, just to the right, there is a "help" button. You will be able to send a message to the Goodreads team and just maybe (I hope) they will be able to restore your data. If they do site-wide data backups, they might be able to retrieve your books and reviews and things. It is certainly worth a try. They usually respond fairly quickly, too.

message 77: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Oh no Maude! That's terrible! Yes, definitely contact the Goodreads help team, tell them what happened and they may be able to restore your profile.

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

I sure hope they can bring her data back. I imagine they have to back up their data, in case a server dies. How awful!

message 79: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Maude,

Contact them ASAP!!! They'll be working tomorrow, but usually not Saturday and Sunday. They do keep backups for at least a few days but I don't know how many. It takes a lot of work for them to restore a member profile but I've seen them do it. I saw them even do it once for someone who had been off (deliberately, then changed their minds) for longer than a few days.

You can use the help link and then message them.

I would also email them from the email address you use for Goodreads. Email them at support at goodreads dot com.

Best wishes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maude, Have you exported your books to a csv file on a regular basis? That would only get books & reviews back though, not everything else. Ugh.

I hope that they can do it.

If it were me I'd ask for help in 3 places:

email to support at goodreads dot com

help link direct message from web site

post in the Goodreads Feedback group

Tell them everything you can about what happened and about you and your profile/email address/etc.

Very best wishes!

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa, could you elaborate on how to backup up the book data to a csv file or point me to the instructions? After what happened to Maude, I want to do this!

I don't even know how to delete my Goodreads account, which is a good thing for now. I don't think I'll poke around to see how it's done. I have seen deleted members on the discussion boards, but those were people who wanted to leave, I assume.

message 81: by [deleted user] (new)

Maude,

Are you the Maude from Boise? If you are, then your profile is still there. There are just two of you now.

message 82: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, to back up your bookshelves: books & reviews, go to: my books, scroll down to import/export, from that page click on export to a csv file, and it will download the file with all fields of your books, including reviews, to a csv file. I have mine go to my desktop. The file will go wherever you tell downloaded files to go by default. Then, once you've got your file on your computer, it will open in Excel if you have it, and will look for another program to open it if you don't.

I export my books nearly every day and keep the last month or so worth of files and selected older ones, the 1st of the month for a year or so. Don't ask me why I do the latter. You probably need to keep only the few latest ones, but sometimes there are glitches you might not know about that have corrupted your books, so I keep quite a few of the latest files.

message 83: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Maude, as Jeanette says,

Are you: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/43...

the same person as

http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/34... ?

If so, your account is here. What happens when you try to access the original account?

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Lisa! I will do that. I would hate to lose my lists and reviews. There are plenty of features on GR I still don't know about.

message 85: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa wrote: "Jeannette, to back up your bookshelves: books & reviews, go to: my books, scroll down to import/export, from that page click on export to a csv file, and it will download the file with all fields o..."

That was easy. Thanks, again, Lisa! :)

message 86: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) You're welcome, Jeannette. Yes, it's quick and easy and, for me, very much worth doing regularly.

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

I can see that after looking at your bookshelves! :)

message 88: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette wrote: "I can see that after looking at your bookshelves! :)"

;-) Exactly! And, the number of reviews I have too. But I'd hate to lose that to-read shelf worth of books, though I have no doubt Goodreads members would help me assemble another one quickly enough.

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

So true. I am always adding a "new" book or two to the list that is already there, but I would still hate to lose the list. The reviews would be a big loss, too. The file saved and opened in Numbers on my iMac with no problems.

message 90: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I write my reviews in a Word doc first and I have all but a few of them saved in a doc. Don't know which ones I didn't save so can't add them. But, I'll bet I have all but a dozen or so. I did that from close to the beginning, even before I learned how to export my books.

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a "doc" file (it pages on the iMac) with little notes and things from posts I wanted to keep. It helped in the beginning when I was getting to know people, too.

Do you keep a book blog, too? I keep playing around with the idea of blogging. They are fun to read.

message 92: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette,

I don't keep a blog, and unfortunately I don't have the time I'd like to read friends' and others' great blogs anywhere near as often as I'd like.

Aside from emails and research and Goodreads (reviews, voting on reviews, groups, messages, etc.) I don't have time to do much else online. Goodreads is mostly it for me.

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

I love goodreads, that's for sure. But, I'm not in any book discussion groups anymore. I am having much more fun just grabbing a book someone mentions or reviews and reading it.

message 94: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette wrote: "I love goodreads, that's for sure. But, I'm not in any book discussion groups anymore. I am having much more fun just grabbing a book someone mentions or reviews and reading it."

I do have a real world book club but it's fairly easy to keep up with because we read just 8 books a year, but I am considering giving up most of my group reads here. I also prefer to read what appeals to me in the moment.

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

I started to feel like I was being driven to read books I didn't feel like reading. I do like getting suggestions from the groups. My local book group didn't quite get off the ground.

message 96: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, Perfectly understand. My local group is one I started and it's nearly 5 years old. Most of us are vegan and we meet at vegetarian and vegan restaurants and have a meal and discuss the books and other things too. 5 of the 9 of us have been there since the beginning, so it's a lot of fun. And, it's only 8 books a year, mostly novels but occasionally non-fiction and once a book of short stories. I love my local group, and I have read books I've loved I'd have never have read otherwise. But, sometimes I'd rather read something else than what we're reading, so I do understand. My Goodreads groups are getting to be too much though. I'm so glad we won't have group reads in this group!!!

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

Is anyone else getting a MS Explorer error message constantly when they go to Goodreads, or when you browse from screen to screen once your're there - says it is a message from the webpage STACK OVERFLOW. I haven't changed any settings or anything different that I can think of....just started yesterday.

message 98: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm getting those, too. Looks like Goodreads is having some problems. Hope they fix things soon.

message 99: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm on Firefox, so I haven't gotten those errors. But, last night the homepage refused to load. I could sneak around it by looking at my friends list, but still. They must be having some problems with a new version of the software.

message 100: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) That bug is being talked about the the Goodreads Feedback group. It seems to be an IE problem:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...

The Feedback group is the best place to report these types of bugs. I assume Goodreads staff will try to fix this one when they return tomorrow from their weekend off.
