ABANDONED. YA Book where a boy is in a car wreck, then abducted by small creatures planning to eat him

I know I don't have much to go on, but here's what I can remember:

A claustrophobic boy is in a car wreck, and thrown from the vehicle. It's presumed he has a head injury, if I remember right. He's then taken by small gnome-like creatures who plan to eat him. They take him underground, where the claustrophobia comes into play, and he panics and fights. I can't remember how he eventually escapes, but he does. He is discovered near the road by a truck driver, who mentions that there is a search going on for the boy.

That is all I can remember, I read this book sometime before the year 2000, but I don't know how old it was then. It's not very long, only a little longer than a Goosebumps book, but it definitely was not a Goosebumps, it had a darker feel to it, if that makes sense. If you can help I'd greatly appreciate it, I've sort of been hunting this one down for a while, but to no avail.

Road Kill perhaps? Reviewer on Amazon mentions strange subterranean creatures who capture a young boy thrown from a car after an accident, and spend the rest of the book discussing whether or not they should eat him or treat him as a God.

(I know this is abandoned, but I've met it accidentally yesterday and was wondering what it is reminding me of).
