It's not "technically" part of the series--sort of a prequel.

It was not so much a prequel as LOTR was a sequel. The hobbit was written as a children's book, Lord of the Rings as a book for adults, who were children when The Hobbit came out.

Corey Sampson I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Hobbit, it kept me turning the page to see what was going to happen to Bilbo next!
I would definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone!
