Well, I figured I start a thread on this since many of us have either read it, wants to read it, or in the process now.

I gave it a whopping 4/5 I rarely give 5 stars unless I am abolutly in love with it.

What did everyone else think??

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Oh! I love books that get made into movies, especially if I didn't know there was a book until the movie came out. Very interested in seeing what everyone thinks of this book.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I gave this book 5 stars. Not only did it hold my interest, and was a real page turner, but I love when authors use hints so that you can figure out (or at least try to!) what is going on before they tell you. This is by far the best of the three Dennis Lehane books that I have read so far. I figured out most of the clues as the story went along, but the ending still surprised me!

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments I love psychological thrillers!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) This is a good one!

Shelli I just started, but like it so far!

Lyn, are his other books any good? Is it worth the reads?

message 8: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I liked Mystic River...

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) quick answer, yes they are worth the read.

I have only read three of his books:
Mystic River , I liked this one the least. I think it was a mood thing at the time, you know I just wasn't in the right mood, but I gave it 3.5 stars because I still liked it.
Gone, Baby, Gone is part of a series with the same two detectives as the main characters. I really liked the women, and am planning on starting over at the beginning. This one got 4 stars.
Shutter Island was by far the best of the three, and got 5 stars from me. All of his books have a lot of twists in the plot, which I like. This one just really got to me.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments What does everyone think of the movie counterparts: I didn't really like Mystic River but havn't seen Gone Baby gone or Shutter Island.

If you want you can start a spoiler thread or just note that what you are going to say contains spoilers!

Let me know how the movie goes. I hate the threaters so I have to wait :(

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Oh, I saw the movie and it was very good! I didn't see the ending coming, poor Teddy. Leo DiCaprio was amazing as always especially...um, wait

************SPOILER ALERT!!!************

When he sees the children and goes into the lake to get them his anguish JUMPS out from the screen, I mean honestly WOW! What did everyone else think of the movie? I totally sat there wondering who was right, Teddy (Andy?) or the doctors? Can't wait to get a hold of the book!

SPOILER

Ok I hated that part with the kids!! I didn't see the movie but I can't even imagine! I am sure that both the book and the movie have the same thing in common: they both will make you have to go back and be like "Oh, I get it now!" Kinda like The Sixth Sense

message 18: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments No, I got it but I was so wrapped up in Teddy I still don't trust that they didn't do all that to him to prevent him from leaving the island and blowing the lid off the "unconventional" mental heath treatments. I think the acting was powerful, but then again Leo DiCaprio is such an intense actor. I will most definitely be watching the movie again and reading the book. What a great concept for the storyline though!

When ..."

I read the book first, and was glad I did! I just saw the movie and also thought it was excellent....I cried my eyes out during the part with the kids....I still felt like....WOW...even though I had read the book....it was interesting to watch my sons who were with me figure things out along the way...they didn't read the book!

AHH I hated the whole "kids" part but then again who actually lked that part ;-?

message 21: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Movie wise I only liked the part because of the intensity of the acting. Michelle William's mind being that broken and Leo DiCaprio's horror at the knowledge of seeing what her broken mind caused her to do was just amazing.

message 22: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I thought that part was amazing acting...like you said his pain was felt!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished and loved it, but am avoiding spoilers here because I'm afraid the movie might differ from the book somehow. I was guessing at certain things, too, while reading but was still thrown off quite a bit by the ending.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments I can't wait to get this book... Jeremy, are you going to go see the movie now?

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I am going to see it as soon as possible. Either on pay per view or Netflix when it is available.

Unless I can convince my wife to let me take the older kids while we are on vacation next week....

message 26: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Oh...go see it on vacation! I went with my 19 and 17 year old sons!

See I have babies and movies are never fun! I will have to wait until either I get an advanced copy (I got friends...) or I will wait until it comes in demand!
