For all of you out there who rated this less than a full star rating, I'd love to know what needed changing? Where did it disappoint you? Did you see the movie as well?

I didn't see the movie which probably would have helped. As a stand-alone, this book just didn't do it for me. I didn't come to care about any of the characters--they were too 2-dimensional. I couldn't picture/visualize the setting and the ending was just blah (not interesting) to me.It probably worked better on screen. Some stories do.
I agree with MB. Some stories just need to be seen for the full effect. I loved the movie. I hadn't been thrilled with the book, but upon re-reading after the movie- it all fell into place. I am generally very good at visualizing, but not in this case. This book is on the same plane as Sphere (Crichton) for me.
