Cheryl (cawils_99) I finished Captive Bride by Johanna Lindsey and I liked it but I thought it could have ended sooner. I also finished Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater which was really good. The hero was so sensitive and the writing seemed very poetic to me. It was a nice change.

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 671 comments I'm reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett for another group read. Normally, I'm not too big on the popular book of the moment, but this one is definitely living up to the hype so far. I'm having a hard time putting it down. Hard to believe this is her first (and so far only) book.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14527 comments I've been tempted to read that one too but too cheap to buy it lol. Keep hoping it'll show up at my library.

message 836: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments My friend bought it for me for Christmas; I just haven't gotten to it. It is sitting right by my bedside.

message 837: by Anna (new)

Anna | 42 comments I just discovered Kristen Ashley, I've read the three Colorado Mountain's books: !!! The Gamble (Colorado Mountain, #1) by Kristen Ashley Sweet Dreams (Colorado Mountain, #2) by Kristen Ashley Lady Luck (Colorado Mountain, #3) by Kristen Ashley . Yummy heroes, nice stories, witty writing plus a bit of suspense. Great author

Dragging myself still through A Feast For Crows by George R.R. Martin and wondering if I will ever finish it. Each character is worse than the previous one... Lisa Kay did you manage to finish this? Did you read the next one?

message 838: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Anna, glad you love KA. I need to read another of hers.

Yes, I made it through all of the five books (thus far) in the Song of Fire & Ice series. Ugh. Just gets worse and worse - and worse . I should have stopped after the first. Or maybe the third. I don't think I would have finished the last if not for my "buddy read" group. Just when I think GRRM can get any worse, he does!

message 839: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14527 comments lol, I have to ask, why do you torture yourself if it was that bad?

I must admit though, I'm struggling with The Count of Monte Cristo. I like the story but its very wordy and I'm only on chapter 5 so far. I'm hoping it gets better but I understand that the story is being set at this point.

message 840: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (last edited Jan 24, 2012 04:44PM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Well, Pamela, you asked a very good question. (I was in the midst of answering you when GRs 502 me out of here!) I kept hoping it would get better, that there was a point to it all. Maybe a happy ending of some kind, though nothing was sacred. And I knew that. Instead he went beyond ugly and depraved, which I didn’t think was possible, destroying all my favorite characters. Sad. I went to the forth book b/c people said to “persevere”. Wish I hadn’t. He’s not getting any more money out of me. I listened to the last one instead of buying it. I would have stopped it because it got too, too awful; however, I was in a “buddy read” with only two other people who very kindly waited for me to get it from the library. (One of whom fell behind...) So, unlike the characters of the book, I stuck with my commitment. Not that I haven’t dropped out of “buddy reads” before, but I wanted to somehow counterbalance what GRRM had done with all the characters. Yes, a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

message 841: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14527 comments That makes sense. I will persevere reading The Count of Monte Cristo, mainly because I suggested the "read a classic" and because I'm truly interested in what makes it such a classic. It'll take me a while. Glad we chose 3 months for it. ☺

message 842: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Yeah, really! I need to get back to it.

message 843: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments TCoMC makes an excellent movie, IMHO. I think I've seen most every version. However, the book is a tad "wordy".

message 844: by Anna (new)

Anna | 42 comments Thanks Lisa Kay, I will avoid the fifth book. I have hope for the movies too: they have to be better. I just finished the fourth book (well, through the end I think I read about one of five pages). It's a bore of a book: 3/4 of the characters you don't care about and the other 1/4 are pathetic.

Answering your question, Pamela, I began this series because the fifth book was the winner of the GR awards, and I loved this genre when I was younger. But GRRM books are not like Tolkien’s or Tad Williams, where you find that eventually good will prevail. His fans say that he is more realistic, but let’s face it, if I want reality I watch the news, or read an essay, I don’t read about Knights, dragons or the Others.

message 845: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments I totally agree with you, Anna. Especially about the news. And more realistic? Good Lord, I hope not. Otherwise the world is filled with nothing but conniving, sadistic, self-serving, promise-breaking, incestuous, murderers.

message 846: by Julianna (last edited Jan 26, 2012 03:20PM) (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 671 comments Pamela and Lisa Kay, I definitely recommend The Help. What an awesome book! I might not have ever picked it up if it hadn't been for the Readers Against Prejudice & Racism group choosing it as a monthly group read. I'm so glad they did, because I really would have been missing out if I hadn't. Now I'm eager to watch the movie. Normally, I'm disappointed by movie versions, but since this one has been nominated for several awards including the Oscar, I'm hopeful that it'll be good.

As to what I'm reading now...I'm about to finish up The Player's Club: Lincoln by Cathy Yardley. Love the hero, but it took a little while to warm up to the heroine. After that I'll probably be reading A Rogue in Texas by Lorraine Heath. I love her writing and it's been a long time since I've read one of her books, so I'm really looking forward to it.

~Megan~ (megadee) The Help is extremely well-done in audio format! All the characters have different voices, and the lady who plays Minnie in the movie reads her voice in the book. It's long on audio, but I didn't want it to end.

And Julie, the movie was great...I think you'll enjoy it!
