The story starts (I think) in present day USA (and when I say present day I think the book is 10-20 years old) where a journalist(?) discovers that her grandmother spent a lot of WW2 in a concentration camp in Poland.
I think her grandmother is dying or has just died, and that is why the main character wants to research her life. I vaguely remember something about a brooch and an explanation of how the grandmother escaped from the concentration camp and helped others escape when they were driven out into the woods to get shot.
The Danish title has the words "Sleeping Beauty" (or 'Tornerose') in it, but it has proven absolutely impossible to find it by googling - there are just too many hits.

I hope somebody will be able to solve this!
