Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Li, Oh I loved Ender's Game so much, and read it because I found it via other Goodreads' members.

We are doing a buddy-read of Persuasion just now.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

Persuasion is my favorite, but for me it's a toss-up between Northanger Abbey and P&P for my second favorite of Austen's works.

Kimberly Im reading The Magic of You (Malory Family, #4) by Johanna Lindsey

I'm not sure where all it is available. I think it is more of a "local" publication. It looks like a tiny magazine of short stories. I can get information on a sample copy if you are interested.

Did you look this up? I'm not done yet, but I keep wondering what you would think.

message 4807: by [deleted user] (new)

I wonder, too. Is it very graphic? I don't like that sort of story, but I guess you know that by now.

I found their Facebook page, via Google. We have something similar here on the college campus. Sometimes there are some real gems inside.

message 4809: by Diane (new)

Diane I just finished "afterwards"by Rosamund Lupton and it was the best thing I've read in a long time. It was a riveting mystery, hold in the second person by one of the crime victims. It was a tricky literary device but beautifully done. (Vaguely reminiscent of The Lovely Bones.). I can definitely recommend this book.

Jeannette wrote: "I wonder, too. Is it very graphic? I don't like that sort of story, but I guess you know that by now."

It is graphic in parts. It's definitely a different sort of book because it's told from the group point of view, not any particular character. It's sad. I just finished it.
ETA: I found that it's called a first person collective voice. The entire range of experiences, from the horrific to the good, are told at once.
For those who don't know, I am talking about The Buddha in the Attic The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka

Well, I'll probably pass, cuz I'm too sensitive. I am looking forward to finally starting The Ginger Tree.

Ooh, I am looking forward to reading that soon. I'm reading some of the Booker shortlisted books now - almost finished Pigeon English and it is just so so.

message 4815: by [deleted user] (new)

I am enjoying The Ginger Tree. I really like the narrator, who tells the story through letters and diary entries.

message 4816: by [deleted user] (new)

That looks like a scary book, Iain! lol

message 4817: by [deleted user] (new)

How often are you pleasantly surprised and how often disappointed?

I am definitely attracted by an interesting cover.

message 4818: by Kimberly (last edited Oct 24, 2011 06:12PM) (new)

Kimberly I finished The Magic of You (Malory Family, #4) by Johanna Lindsey and enjoyed it. 4 stars.

Now I'm going to start The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss which is by a new to me author.

I don't have that title on my shoujo manga shelves! Do you read much manga? Watch any anime?

Let's see... I'll make a list for you tomorrow. Have you watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? It's not shoujo, but it's one of my faves. 65 episodes, all set for a Christmas vacation marathon. :)

message 4829: by [deleted user] (new)

It wasn't a "gripping" read, but it certainly drew me in. I want to get back to reading it. I am surprised it is written by a man; he certainly has given Mary an authentic voice.

Reading his bio, he certainly had an interesting life, too!

Oh, Christine, The Ginger Tree is wonderful!. The link button isn't working....... Jeanette, Lee, you guys, tell her!!!!

Ooops, it wasn't Lee, but Laura who read it.

Iain wrote: "That's be wicked Jeannette! Thanks in advance for that. (: And I can't say I have, although I've been meaning to check out FMA for some time now, will be sure too soon! :D"

Iain, be sure to watch FMA: Brotherhood. The first FMA series diverged from the manga way too much! I don't generally read shounen because I just don't enjoy "reading" battle scenes, but the volumes I have read are good.

You might want to check out Death Note: Boredom, Vol. 1. I have seen the two live-action moves, but not the anime. It might be what you were looking for when you picked up Judas.

And, totally different, but I think pretty close to my favorite anime: Satoshi Kon's "Millenium Actress"

message 4838: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Yup!

message 4839: by [deleted user] (new)

Be sure to check the other thread, too, where I posted some manga recs.

I haven't read Death Note, maybe because I don't care for the art style. The movies condense the story into a cat-and-mouse game between L and Light, but I loved them. Purists don't care for them, because the story is changed. Oh, well.

My problem with fighting scenes is actually following them! All those swishing blades, and close-up shots of who-knows-what/who! I kind of gloss over them.......

message 4840: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I finished up the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny with A Trick of the Light being the last one (so far). It was sooooooo good! I then read the most recent Agatha Raisin book in the series by M.C. Beaton, As The Pig Turns (love the title), which was another satisfying read in that series. I am now reading the latest one from G.M. Malliet, Wicked Autumn: A Max Tudor Novel. Great, great reading this month!

message 4841: by [deleted user] (new)

Jury still out on that one, Jeannette. This recovery requires lots of patience, which isn't my strong suit. Maybe it's a good chance for me to practice it, though. Cabin fever is rearing its ugly head, but I am getting some great reading in, so that's a definite plus. Going to concentrate on positive today.

message 4850: by [deleted user] (new)

I am enjoying it. I'm not far enough in to know how many stars I will give it. Chrissie and Laura both gave it 5. I will read more of it tomorrow.
