It is suspenseful, isn't it?!

I hate cover views of books; I have to hover over them to see what the book is. Even books that I know, it might be another cover than the one I read. But, I know some people prefer the covers.

Chrissie, Can you read the title & author if you hover your mouse over a cover?

I'm not surprised. So tiny. You can at least click on the cover and get to the book's page.

I finished The Year of Fog The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond , which I really loved. Now I am starting one that I got on impulse, The Buddha in the Attic The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka

I like to have both, I hope it doesn't annoy people. I also need a link, but sometimes the cover will be one I've seen and wondered about so it will catch my eye in a post.

I was just looking at that one (like minutes ago!). I will be looking forward to your thoughts.

message 4758: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, I'm so glad you also loved The Year of Fog. I've really enjoyed it and No One You Know; I really have to get to the rest of Michelle Richmond's books!!!

Yes, but it is a pain b/c that means you have to click on much more than is really necessary - books you are acquainted with, and books that you can tell from the title are not of interests. It is no big problem but I do get happy when people use the written book links. I think that people who have good vision are not aware of the difficultis of the book covers for those who have poorer vision.

Josh, I am Legend looks rather interesting and creepy at the same time. How are you liking it?

Oh, I agree Chrissie. My vision is fine with glasses but I still strongly prefer the titles/authors to be linked via text.

message 4765: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lisa, well, that is three of us that prefer the book links :0)

message 4766: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments Four of us. I can read the title on the book cover image when I hover the cursor over it, but I much prefer the book title link. (Possibly because it took me months to realise that the title was readable with the cursor hovering over it!)

message 4767: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Kim, nice, the more the merrier!

Manybooks Chrissie wrote: "Lisa, well, that is three of us that prefer the book links :0)"

There are quite a lot of us who prefer textual book links. Remember how a while ago, GR tired to make the currently reading list all book cover links, there were so many complaints that they decided to do both covers and texts (I still would prefer all text, as I think you could get more on the list, but it's definitely better than just book covers, I just don't think in pictures for and with books, I think in text, covers are secondary at beat for me).

No, I did not catch that.

message 4770: by [deleted user] (new)

I will be sure to post both links. Sometimes I post a cover only, when I think the cover is "well-known" and easy to recognize. But, I forget that not everyone is working on a big screen like I am. I love my big monitor, just for that reason alone.

message 4771: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie That is nice, Jeanette. I felt pretty stupid opening my mouth, but I figured why not.

message 4772: by [deleted user] (new)

Certainly nothing to feel stupid about, Chrissie! I never thought about how difficult they are to read. I always say: "If you don't ask, the answer is certainly 'No!'" :)

message 4773: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Jeanette, well I did finally open my mouth.

message 4774: by [deleted user] (new)

I know you are usually so shy..... It was a surprise! :-O

message 4775: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I have good eyesight with glasses so I can hover over a cover and see title & author, but it is one more step. I have a 13 inch monitor so I do have to do that. I rarely recognize covers on their own, even when they're big, unless I can actually read the book's title on them.

Thanks, Jeannette!!!

message 4776: by [deleted user] (new)

I am spoiled by my iMac (27 inches of screen). I watch movies on it sometimes, too.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette wrote: "I am spoiled by my iMac (27 inches of screen). I watch movies on it sometimes, too."

I have a MacBook Pro. I keep meaning to look for a monitor for it. I'd probably be able to go up to only 17 inches or maybe 20 inches though, but maybe not 27 inches, not only because of the cost but because there is an unremovable hutch attached to my desk so that a bigger monitor might not fit on it.

message 4778: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 22, 2011 07:00PM) (new)

I have one of those IKEA tables for my work area. just a flat surface with legs. The iMac is just the big monitor, keyborad and mouse. no other hardware.

message 4779: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Oh Jeanette, I am jealous. I have a 17 inch screen. Clearly within the next year or two we will be changing. But I have this appointment to look at different computer programs for the visibly impaired!!! I have high hopes. Maybe there will be something special.

Lisa, are you still very, very happy with yor new computer? Now all the wrinkles must be ironed out and it is pure enjoyment. I hope.

message 4780: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, The hutch blocks the area so I don't think a 27 inch monitor/iMac would fit on the desk.

Chrissie, Yes, I am very happy with the computer. I am thinking of getting an external monitor though as 13 inches is often a problem, though surprisingly it works okay often enough. No more learning curve or bugs; all is now fine, yes!

message 4781: by Kim (last edited Oct 22, 2011 10:42PM) (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments I love love love my 11 inch MacBook Air. Small enough to fit into a large handbag. Easy to use propped up in bed. Does everything I need it to do.

Do you think Apple might care to pay me to gush about their product? ;D

message 4782: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kim, Those MacBook Airs are so cool! So light! But you can't burn DVDs; that's their only downside I know of.

message 4783: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments Yep, no dvds. But there are a number of other computers in the household for that purpose should the need arise. I use it for that part of my work I have to do at home, for internet surfing, for email and for storing photographs and audiobooks. All of that it does perfectly.

message 4784: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kim, I have only the one computer. Of course, I've had it for four months and I've yet to burn a DVD.

message 4785: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Kim and Lisa, I think there are so many good appliances out on the market. When choosing, isn't the most important thing to figure out how you intend on using it?! We all have varying requirements. I do not know of anyone who isn't happy with their own choice! Isn't that nice?!

message 4786: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie, Yes, everyone I know is happy with their computers (except a couple who've had to get a certain one because of work requirements) and it is wonderful people like what they have.

My Internet is out now so I'm relying on my iPhone. :-(

message 4787: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lisa, well, it is good to know that it is not just me that feels like punching the internet off and on. Even Americans have internet problems.

Felicia Rogers (feliciarogers) | 37 comments I just finished a short story, Old Black Bear's Night on the Town" by Megan Colley, in a publication called Touching Stars. Very cute story. I'm hoping this girl seeks a more "public" publication route. :)

I am going to check my swap sites and see if there are any others. I was surprised that it got several really bad reviews based on writing from goodread reviewers because I loved the writing! I thought she built the suspense beautifully.

Lisa wrote: "Jeannette, The hutch blocks the area so I don't think a 27 inch monitor/iMac would fit on the desk."

Yes, I was just describing my work area, which would leave me room for an even bigger monitor, but I think the one I have is plenty.

My daughter is really happy with her Macbook, too. She does all of her coursework on it.

That would be nice, being a paid gusher.

We probably should have bought the Air for the girl, because I feel bad when she leaves the house with that heavy backpack.

Is this an online publication, Felicia? Or something at your library? I'm not familiar with it.

message 4795: by [deleted user] (new)

I reported that I was starting The Buddha in the Attic The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka but I didn't read at all yesterday. Hopefully today. It is such a small book, but I am excited about it. Bookmarks magazine highlighted it in this latest issue.

message 4796: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll be watching for your review. I haven't checked the summary, but I like the title. :)

message 4797: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie, Yes we definitely get internet connectivity problems here! I don't even have wireless which tends to go out even more. I want wireless though.

Christine, I love Michelle Richmond's writing. Beautifully written passages and great storytelling!

Jeannette, The Air is definitely lighter, but it is expensive, and their other laptops have gotten lighter over the years. I replaced a 6 year old laptop this June and it's so much smaller and lighter than the old one!

message 4798: by [deleted user] (new)

I am sure you can "feel" a noticeable difference, Lisa. That's why my daughter doesn't complain about lugging around the Macbook -- it's lighter than the old Compaq.

Pamela Barrett (booksandartpamela_barrett) | 58 comments I'm reading Susan Meissner's new book A Sound Among the Trees A Novel by Susan Meissner , definite Comfort Read ;-) set in this time, with flashbacks to the civil war she unravels the mystery of Holly Oak, a mansion in Virginia, and the women that have lived there through the years.

message 4800: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I just finished Georgette Heyer's Venetia (which I absolutely loved!) so I'm on to reading Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game (which I've been meaning to read for a very long time now), Bram Stoker's Dracula (I started reading this book last year but then stopped a few chapters in. I decided to start reading it again but yeah, it's a bit boring at the moment) and re-reading Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey =)
