I'm just staring The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner. I know some of you have read and enjoyed this book and others by this author. I hope it's a good one!

message 3552: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I just finished an egalley of Smuggled, which I enjoyed very much It is historical fiction about life in Romania and Hungary through the experiences of one Jewish individual, who as an infant was smuggled from Hungary to Romania to escape death at the hands of the Nazis. You experience life in Ceausescu's Romania, life behind the Iron Curtain and life after the barrier came down. The book covers the time period 1940s through to 1990. Here follows my spoiler-free review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Now I will start Running in the Family b/c I love memoirs, love learning about different countries, in this case Ceylon, and b/c it is short. I prefer reading on my Kindle.

Kristi (kristicasey) The Lost Symbol. Finally got back in the reading saddle after a week off.

message 3554: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Dutton | 10 comments Fianlly finished Dragonfly in Amber. Now onto Voyager.

message 3555: by [deleted user] (new)

I am reading Murder Must Advertise, my first Wimsey mystery. He's not such a bad chap....

message 3556: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I finished Moloka'i yesterday. It's now one of my very favorite books. I might be tempted to buy a copy. I read a borrowed library book. I'll think seriously about it, even though I'm not buying many books. There are all sorts of reasons I'd like my own copy, including reminding myself of and learning the included Hawaiian words.

I just started (for a Goodreads' group) The Forever War by Joe Haldeman.

Any book I read immediately after Moloka'i can't possibly get a fair assessment for me. I can't stop gushing, or recommending it to others. I'm hyping it so much, I'm afraid my friends will feel disappointed if/when they read it, but I don't think so.

message 3557: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) currently reading Juliet after finishing Olive Kitteridge- hopefully I'll like this new one better then the other. The other was very depressing.

Did you think it was good though? I've heard good things about Olive Kitteridge, but I have heard it's dark.

message 3559: by Tiziana (new)

Tiziana I just finished reading "The Oracle of Stamboul." A book I won on goodread's giveaways. I enjoyed the story very much.

message 3560: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 222 comments This thread is death to my TBR list!! The Oracle of Stamboul sounds just wonderful, Tiziana!

Meanwhile, I've just finished The Legate's Daughter on audiobook, which I enjoyed, although not as much as the other book by the same author I read last year. Next up on audio will be The Lincoln Lawyer. I've not read anything by Michael Connelly previously, so I have my fingers crossed I'll enjoy it.

On paper, I'm struggling my way through Archangel's Consort, having quite enjoyed the previous two in the series. This one... not so much, and I'm contemplating giving it up. And because one book is never enough, I'm also reading Your Mother's Tongue: A Book of European Invective. It's very well written, both amusing and interesting, and has one of the most fitting covers for a book I've seen:
Your Mother's Tongue A Book of European Invective by Stephen Burgen

message 3561: by [deleted user] (new)

I just added that one to my tbr list, Darkpool! I love books about language.

message 3562: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I will now start The Kitchen House. Everyone has read it. Some love it, and I think for me this will be something to sink into.

I just finished Running in the Family. I did have to struggle a bit, but by the end I was enjoying it and very happy that I had read it. It is a memoir about the author, Michael Ondaatje's family and living in Ceylon. My GR review follows: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

It was a three-star book for me, I liked the way the author told the story, but i can't say I liked the story itself. It was very dark - I agreed with a lot of those reviews. I don't think I'll find myself re-reading this one any time soon. I personally can't say I'd really recomend it to anyone either. It was a personal let-down.

message 3564: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lauren, Too bad, but thanks for the information. It's not high up on my list, and I won't bump it up either, even though I often like dark.

Thank you, Darkpool. Your Mother's Tongue sounds like really good too. Reminds me of my own European background.

Today, I started reading Room. I've been looking forward to reading it.

I (like everyone, haha) have read The Kitchen House. I will be very interested to hear your thoughts.

message 3569: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't read it -- but that shouldn't surprise anybody. I have to get off the computer and read again!

message 3570: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Christine I have only read 30ish pages, and I love it. I even started a review.

message 3571: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) Loved Juliet recomend it for people who like Romeo and Juliet spin-offs.Now I'm reading My Life in France I was given a pearl necklace just like Julia Child so I thought that would be a fun book to read and wear my pearls with.

message 3572: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) I finished The Lost Symbol the other day, and looking forward to starting Millie's Fling today.

message 3573: by Kathy (new)

message 3574: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments I seem to be in a book slump. Not sure what I want to read next. Maybe I will go back to a comfort read and read some Harry Potter..ah that sounds good!

I plan to read all 7 in a row, but after I see the last movie this summer.

message 3576: by Tiziana (new)

Tiziana Wow, that's funny you say Harry Potter. I just bought all seven books from Kijiji. I haven't started reading them yet, but soon.

message 3577: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Finished Millie's Fling the same day I started it, and jumped into my tag-teaming of The Pillars of the Earth. I was already around 60% done, but by listening in car and reading at home, I was able to do the last 40% over the weekend. Yay!!!

What to read next??? Hmmm... :D

message 3578: by John (new)

John I'm going to try to finish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Many people said that the book got better just about where I gave up on it. Having seen the movie twice, the book might make more sense.

message 3579: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading The Great Divorce: A Nineteenth-Century Mother's Extraordinary Fight against Her Husband, the Shakers, and Her Times. I thought I would try a little historical non-fiction.

I also "read" The Arrival, a cross between a picture book and a graphic novel. Wonderful wordless story about how an immigrant experiences life in a new world.

message 3580: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments So glad I picked up book 7 of Harry Potter, definantly what I needed!

message 3581: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) Just finished The Peach Keeper which I loved. It was another winner from Sarah Addison Allen. Now I'm going to read my April book club read which is A Novel Bookstore

I read that one for book club. I really liked it, but some of my groupies didn't as much. How is it for you?

I want this one. I tried to win it, but didn't get lucky. It's on my list to buy whenever I find some money under the cushions.

I am really enjoying it. It's fascinating to learn more about the Shakers. And it's horrifying to learn about the sorry state of women's rights back in the 1800s. I like the short paragraphs and the author's voice. I'm about halfway in.

message 3586: by Beth (new)

Beth (mommyto4bees) im now reading the hunger games, finally!!!!!!!!!!!

message 3587: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Beth wrote: "im now reading the hunger games, finally!!!!!!!!!!!"

Very smart, Beth, waiting until you can read all three in a row instead of going through TORTURE as I did!

message 3588: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Just started The Dry Grass of August by Anna Jean Mayhew. It's being compared to To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help in its importance to Southern literature about race relations. Set in the 1950s, 1954, it's a tale fraught with the abominable differences of race and rights. One review states that it gives more insight into the state of race relations than To Kill a Mockingbird. Even though I've just started it, the characters and writing style have grabbed me.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Today I'm going to start Heads You Lose, co-written by Lisa Lutz. The good news: it looks funny and it's (co-)written by Lisa Lutz. The bad news: it's not a Spellman series book. I shall see.

I've read only their initial letters to each other where they talk about writing the book together, and just that part is hilarious! I hope to stop the book proper before I go to bed tonight.

message 3592: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Nothing. I took the day off from reading. I spent it with my tv, catching up on my weekly DVR stuff. :)

So you type your audio books up to have a actual copy of the book? I've never liked audio books..dont know why. I've always liked being read to but I've never liked listening to audio books.

message 3596: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm starting The End of the Affair.

Whew! Okay, it's official my brain shuts off on the weekends. I could not figure out what you were asking. I kept thinking, "Whaaat?" Ha ha! No! I was talking about typing the reviews. Typing them into GR and/or blog. Still laughing at myself here.

message 3599: by Lauren (new)
