Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I completely understand your aversion to reading My Sister's Keeper, Chrissie. In hearing and reading about many of Picoult's books, I have hesitated and wondered if I really wanted to read about the subject she's dealing with. However, I will attest to the worthiness for me of reading three of her books so far-- My Sister's Keeper, The Pact, and Nineteen Minutes--as amazingly thought provoking stories. She seems to deal with issues that do indeed make people uncomfortable, but she does it in such a way that I, for one, am always glad I read the book. I like being taken outside my comfort zone and made to think about different issues in different ways. I find that I can't put her books down when I start one. Having said that, I do have to pace myself with her, because I do get so involved in whatever issue she is addressing. She is a master at weaving a story packed with emotion and different viewpoints. They can definitely drain you.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy, I liked The Pact too. I've also seen at least a couple movies based on her books. But MSK has been my favorite of her stories. Too bad about that ending; I got mad at it. I still love the book. The way the narration moved between characters was brilliant.

With Picoult I seem to either love them or really dislike them (not hate, but possibly throw one every now and then). The ones that I loved were My Sister's Keeper, The Pact,Salem FallsandPerfect Match. I threw these: The Tenth Circle, Change of Heart andHouse Rules. I do have her new one, but it's on Kindle so I can't throw it if I don't like it.

If it's that bad, you can hit the delete button!

message 3455: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, I can hit delete and say bad words at it. That should do it. (hopefully it's good though)

message 3456: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't throw your Kindle, Christine! Try to restrain yourself!

message 3457: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't worry...I have read a lot of crap on my kindle and never turned to violence. :)

message 3458: by [deleted user] (new)

good. good. :)

Or find a book or a stuffed toy that you can throw instead, preferable one that will not break anything (I did that once when I was at university by throwing a very heavy book at a wall, it left a very noticeable dent).

message 3460: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) I like Jodi Picoult books because they open my mind to other possibilities. Things that I've never really thought about before. I like books that ask questions like why? I know Ms. Picoult doesn't always have the answers..but she has the courage to look beyond and to research and ask those questions and try to come up with the answers. Another author that does this is Chris Bohjalian (spelling?). I really like those kinds of books because they are great for discussions for book clubs because every one has their own opinion about what is right or what is "moral". I look forward to reading her next book.

What a relief, and amazing restraint on your part, Chrisine. ;-)

Yes, I am quite amazing. Haha!

Lauren, you hit the nail on the head. Picoult encourages the reader to ask why and question just what is the moral choice.

message 3465: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I will be starting Ava's Man. It looks terribly inteeresting, being about the author's grandfather and mother growing up in the Appalachian foothills during the Depression. I think I am going to like the grandfather. Also it was available for my new Kindle :0)

I just finished Nicholas and Alexandra. The book description is incorrect - this is the whole book, not part of two books! I chose this becuase I wanted to try a book by the author Robert K. Massie. I am terribly pleased. I must read more by Massie. He is one of those authors that makes history and people's lives so darn interesting, and never, ever dry. Don't read a crime novel, read this instead. I gave it five stars! Here is my GR review which explains why!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Chrissie, I love to read about this Russian royal family. I used to read a lot about Anastasia. I will definitely add this one to my list.

message 3467: by John (new)

John I am starting to read True Grit. Having just seen the old and new versions of the movie I am interested to see how they compare to the book.

message 3468: by Debora (new)

Debora Geary | 10 comments I just finished The Secret Diary of Alice in Wonderland, Age 42 and Three-Quarters by Barbara Silkstone . Very funny. Starting Heat Wave (Nikki Heat, #1) by Richard Castle because anything that makes me think about Nathan Fillion ought to be a good read :).

message 3469: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Kathy, I am sold on this author! I highly recommend Nicholas and Alexandra.

John, I have started Ava's Man and the writing is fabulous. Thanks for recommending it!

Mary | 245 comments Hi everybody. Hope you are all doing well. I haven't posted in a long time so I'll jump right in again. I recently finished The Paris Wife which was very good - 4 stars. I am currently reading Five Quarters of the Orange which is wonderful. Hopefully I won't wait another six months to post again!

message 3471: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Mary, Glad to see you again. Can't wait to hear about further books you'll read. And, look around; we may give you ideas for books to read.

message 3472: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished rereading Jane Eyre in time for the new movie version being released soon, and now I've started One Day by David Nicholls.

message 3473: by [deleted user] (new)

Did you complete the Goodreads Jane Eyre challenge, Shelley? Will the movie be released near you? I'm curious to see it, but the release is rather limited. I hope this new adaptation is good.

message 3474: by [deleted user] (new)

I am sure hoping it comes to town, but it worries me that the release is so limited. The director is very talented!

message 3475: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll see it on video, if I have to. We got "The King's Speech" in the theaters here after the Oscars noms, but that won't happen with this film. I guess we'll see how it does in the big cities.

message 3476: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) Just finished American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld worst book I've read in a long time. This was definatley NOT a clean story. It was not my cup of tea - I litterally forced myself to finish it. I thought it was a complete waste of time and good paper and trees. I read her other book Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld and I didn't like that book either for the same reason. I guess I should've realized that before I actually started wasting time with this novel. I'm now reading Hearts Aglow (Striking a Match, #2) by Tracie Peterson which is by one of my favorite writers - I've been waiting for the release of this book for a while and am looking forward to reading this via my nook.

message 3479: by Anne Hawn (new)

Anne Hawn Smith (hawnsmith) I'm reading "Unbearable Lightness of Scones" by Alexander McCall Smith. I love the "44 Scotland Street" series...or anything by Smith. There is only one more book in the series and I am in mourning already.

message 3480: by Debora (new)

Debora Geary | 10 comments The last book in a great series is always painful for me... I'll have to go check that one out, Anne.

message 3481: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I will now start The Confessions of Catherine de Medici because a group of which I am a member is reading this now, and I have had it waiting to be read for ages! Oc course I am curious about her, living myself near France! She has been so maligned, and I believe this book looks at her with a more balanced view. Furthermore, I have read another book by the author, and I loved it!

I just completed Ava's Man, which I very highly recommend. My GR review explains why: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... It is about the author's grandfather, who lived in the Appalachian foothills during the Depression.

Debora Geary | 10 comments I'm undecided. Way too many choices.

message 3483: by [deleted user] (new)

This happens to me all the time....

message 3484: by [deleted user] (new)

Chrissie,
I saw your suggestion for Ava's Man, and I wanted to tell you that I actually read it a couple of years back. I liked it a lot too! My friend met the author and got me interested in his books. Thank you for recommending it though.

I've finally settled on a book!

The Heretic Queen by Michelle Moran

message 3486: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) Finished Hearts Aglow and loved it - looking forward to the last book in the series coming out in June. This is now my favorite Tracie Peterson series. Surpassing that even of the Heirs of Montana which is the first series I ever read by her. This series reminds me a little of my favorite tv show Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman which is probably why I'm enjoying it. Wish they didn't have to come to an end so quickly! Now I'm reading And Only to Deceive

message 3487: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Christine, didn't you fall in love with Charlie?!

Yes I did. :)
I may reread that one soon. Now I am in the mood.

Chrissie Heavens, I really cannot reread (oops I forgot the re) books when I have tons of purchased books piled up to read. But it is worth it. Honestly, when he dies you feel such a huge hole.

I always warn new members about this danger. I'm retired, so I have more time to read than the average lady who may work full time or have a family, or both, but there are still too many books and too little time!

I had this problem before I came to goodreads, but yes, this place is not helping :). I have two kids, a job, and a desire to write, all of which make reading time more precious than sleep.

I've finally got my hands on the second half of Connie Willis' blockbuster All Clear. It's great but a little confusing. I'm hoping my brain catches up with the plot sometime soon!

Lee, It will be worth it, and if you're still confused about a few things, between all of us who've read it, we'll figure it out. She does a marvelous job putting it all together!

message 3499: by [deleted user] (new)

A friend just lent me The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot . I had no plans to read this book, but now I will probably start it after my current book.

Current book...Harlan Coben's newest! Lovelovelove him!

message 3500: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am still reading The Confessions of Catherine de Medici. While I was grumbling in the beginning now I cannot put it down. SO MUCH HAPPENS!!!! This is defintely plot driven and exciting and finally I do kind of like Catherine. .... So forget what I said before. This is good stuff and you learn history in a very fun manner. You wouldn't believe what happens.
