It's a nonfiction book about meth and its insidious development as "America's drug," taking a look at a small town in Iowa to track its progression. I decided to go ahead and read it after finishing Ellen Hopkins' latest fictionalized account about her daughter's addiction to meth, Fallout.

I'm not surprised that it is set in Iowa. Meth production is a really big problem here.

It's an amazing story. One of the major players in its establishment in Iowa and the midwest was actor/comedian Tom Arnold's sister, Lori Arnold. She created quite the empire. What is so tragic is how so much of it could have been prevented except for, you guessed it, politics and protecting the drug companies' interests. Kentucky has a big problem with meth, too, so that was one reason I was interested in this book. Also, the 9-yr-old that my daughter and her husband are raising and who I love dearly as a granddaughter had a mother and father who abused meth and finally admitted that this precious girl needed a staple home. The mom supposedly isn't using anymore, but the dad is. I get so angry when I think about their selfishness. I'm really proud of how my daughter has stepped in and become a loving, staple source of parenthood for this dear child.

Hi Kathy and Jeannette, if you liked (I use the word liked caustiously)Methland, you may want to check out my book Tales of the Titmouse. It's an inspirational memoir of overcoming drug addiction and the lifestyle that accompanies it. I use Tales of the Titmouse: One Woman's Journey out of Darkness to minister hope to addicts and their families.
I'm going to try something that a friend gave me, but who knows if it'll stick since I am major slumping. Anyway, I will attempt Next

I'll watch for your review Kathy! :)

So now I am reading Little Boy Lost.

Chrissie, I have A Morbid Taste for Bones on my to-read and wish lists, but thanks for the reminder about it. I've already been through my cozy reading period where in August and some of September I read through the Agatha Raisin series by M.C. Beaton. I'm trying to catch up on some heavier reading now. "So many books, so little time."

I am glad you liked the book, Chrissie. You should try the other ones as well. Btw, has anyone read Flow Down Like Silver: Hypatia of Alexandria? I'm really tempted to buy the book, but I'm wondering if anyone has read it and thinks that it's worthwhile to get.

Nevermind. I'm not in the mood for this at all right now. Back on the shelf it goes.

Go have a cupcake and read some Calvin and Hobbes, Christine! I always fall back on manga at times like this, but it's an acquired taste for some! :)

Yes, doctor. :)
Yes, doctor. :)
Good girl! If Calvin and Hobbes can't cheer you up, you'll need to take a second cupcake! :D
Do you have any kind of guilty pleasure reading to fall back on, or any favorite re-reads???

I just don't feel like reading I guess because I have tons of things that I want to read. I think I am too worked up about this school situation to let myself relax into a book. It'll pass.
I am just finishing The Pursuit of Love. I read a little background on the Mitfords and the were quite a family!

Ooooh!!!! Sorry I can't actually help you Gundula, but that looks like another for the TBR list. Sigh!!

I know it looks wonderful, and I have a thing about Hypatia ever since I read a picture book about her for a club read the the Children's Literature Group (and, I love historical fiction, especially, early historical fiction). I think I am going to get that book, I know I shouldn't, but ... (and the same author has also written an earlier novel on Mary Magdalene which looks equally wonderful, The Secret Magdalene: A Novel.

Well, I think I think I will definitely get the book on Hypatia, it's brand new, but the novel on Mary Magdalene got really good reviews. Of course, it will be a while before I got the book, or get to the book, but I will let you know what I thought of it.

Take a look at The Forgotten Garden. I just finished it and loved it. It might be just the ticket.

I ordered the book, so we'll see if I like it.

I really want to read that. There is probably a long wait at the library; I should probably get in the queue.

Mary, I have that one waiting to be read. Upon your opinion, I am moving it up on the list. Thanks.

I've been looking at that one, too. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of it, Christine.

So far it's not upsetting like I was worried it would be. It's written through the innocence of the child so the "bad parts" are understood more than said. I'm not that far yet though.

Thank you Mary, this looks like a great book. I added it to my wish list ;-)

Thanks for the idea! I will look it up.

I really liked this book. I would also suggest The Third Angel and The Story Sisters.

Christine, I'm reading My Name Is Memory and enjoying it. Thanks for the recommendation, it's a little different from what I expected but I like the historical detail.

I read this a while back and really enjoyed it, Jess.
