Ooh, I really liked both The Elegance of the Hedgehog and Middlesex. I read Middlesex with my read world book club.

Hi Jeanette! It works fine as a stand-alone, yes. Not sure I've read the first.

I added it to my queue.

People post so much on this group. Does anyone actually read all of the posts? How?
I'm in the middle of about 10-15 books. Usually I have one or two books I'm reading regularly (generally easyish fiction) that I finish pretty fast, along with a whole bunch of books that I'm reading in bits slowly. Do other people do that?

Lydia, I usually read only one novel at a time, but I'm often reading other books at the same time. And, even though I'm a mod, I skim some of the more active threads, and I don't tend to read the threads of tv shows I don't watch, though I open and look.
You don't have to follow every message here. It's fine to participate in whichever threads you want, and you don't have to read all the posts for you to post a message.

I follow this thread, to get book suggestions and then any threads that interest me in particular. I don't think anyone could keep up with all of them! :)

Hi Lydia, welcome! As Jeannette said this is a great thread for finding book suggestions even if they're not comfort reads. It's also a nice place to participate if you feel like sharing your current read.

That's been on my to-read list for quite a while, thanks for reminding me of it.
The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa is on my "absolute favorite" list. It's so beautiful.
I'm too scared to recommend books to you, Fi! Actually, I worry about recommending books to anyone. I figure my GR and FB friends will see what I'm reading by way of my GR updates, lol. I put Hotel Iris on hold at the library and can't wait to get it.
I just finished reading
. I thought it was very good .. wasn't really what I was expecting, although I didn't know what to expect, I just picked up the book at Goodwill and didn't really read it I just recognized the authors name LOL.I just got three books today
,
and
.. I have tons on my TBR pile but I think I am going to start one of these three tonight as they are each fairly shorter books I should be able to finish fairly easily.
The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox is a goodie!!

I love that sentence, Kristin! :)

Wait...I missed what you though about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

I finished Four In Hand and started on Under the Lilacs, which I've been wanting to read for ages. Love LM Alcott. Any more fans here?
Lee wrote: "Ta dum! I'm about to start To Kill a Mockingbird. I hope I like it!"I ordered a copy from the library because, I'm ashamed to say that I have not read the book yet. I'll be starting it as soon as it becomes available.

Lydia, I think there are lots of fans of Little Women here! The only other of hers I've read is Little Men.

Yup Fiona, first time reader of TKAM! And it looks like Gundula will be joining me soon - Yay! I don't feel so bad now.
Gundula, and Lee, hoping you'll enjoy it. I think it helps to remember that it takes place during the Great Depression, in the 1930s, in the southern U.S. in Alabama. (As did Harper Lee's growing up.)

LMAO.. I'm good at making those kinds of statements!!!!
I actually decided to read The Vanishing Act... and I didn't care for it.. at all.. maybe I just wasn't in the mood, but I just could not get into it..
I'm Loving TKAM! I finally got a few pages read last night. I'm staying away from the discussion thread until I finish.
Lee wrote: "I'm Loving TKAM! I finally got a few pages read last night. I'm staying away from the discussion thread until I finish."So glad to hear it, Lee! Yay!!! There aren't any real spoilers on the thread yet, but I understand you not wanting to risk it.
I just had another relatively long comment not post, this seems to be a common occurrence with GR lately for me. I'll try again, but I am frustrated.I am still waiting for my copy of To Kill a Mockingbird to arrive from the library. While I'm waiting, I decided to start a historical novel that I have on my to-read list, My Father's Paradise: A Son's Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq. I've just read the introduction, and I'm already loving it. It certainly rings true, the story of how a second generation American partially distances himself from his first Generation American immigrant father (strange appearance, strange culture, strange accent); I've seen it happen myself. I also, like usual, have a huge load of books currently on the go, but this book looks to be something I will be reading very much in one go, it looks lovely.
Gundula, My Father's Paradise is one of the first books I read for the challenge and it is wonderful. I know you will enjoy it and look forward to hearing your comments when you have finished it.

Lee, I know, I'm sure there are lots of Little Women fans out there. I was after people who are fans of a few of LMA's books though. I love all I've read so far, but not ventured into her adult stories and articles yet.
Finished Under the Lilacs and read right through James Herriot's Yorkshire: A Guided Tour Through the Beloved Land of All Creatures Great and Small which I loved. Now I want to go to all those beautiful places. The photography in that book is amaaaazing. Now started on Kiss The Night Goodbye and still making my way very slowly through Plain Tales from the Raj.
My Father's Paradise: A Son's Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq sounds really interesting. Adding it to my mountainous wishlist.

Lee, I'm so glad you're liking it. Yes, I'd stay away from the thread. People have mentioned a few scenes. Better to read them in the book first, I think. I LOVE Scout and Atticus so much. Most of the characters are wonderful, thanks to Scout's voice, which I adore.
Lee, Where are you in the book, and what were you expecting that's different. Well, the latter maybe you should wait until you're through and discuss it in the TKAM thread.

Ooooooh, five stars for Cashelmara! I've got that on my list. I'm glad it was awesome.

Lisa, I'm not going near the TKAM thread until I'm done. I'm not even 100 pages in yet but I will get a lot read tonight. I love Scout and Atticus too! What an awesome dad he is.

Though I haven't made much progress on my current book (which I am really enjoying!!!): Golden Gate: The Life and Times of America's Greatest Bridge
I am going to start To Kill a Mockingbird, but now I have to get a copy from the library. The 60 cent paperback I have from 1962 has fallen apart! The first 6 pages and the cover have fallen off and I don't want to open the book too far. I do like the first few pages.
Jeannette, My 60¢ paperback isn't really readable either. I bought a 50th anniversary hardcover edition for my recent reread and further rereads. I wonder if we have the exact same 60¢ edition. I hope that you can get it from the library right away; I'll bet it's being more frequently read because it's the 50th anniversary of the book.

My paperback has the dark cover, with the bird on it, being pierced with multi-colored "arrows". The library has quite a lot of newer copies, and many of them are checked out. But, I am on hold for one of the few that are not checked out. I'll have it today or tomorrow!

I am going to sit and enjoy the wonders of TKAM this afternoon. I started it late last night, and after only 10 pages, I am in love all over again.
Jeannette wrote: "My paperback has the dark cover, with the bird on it, being pierced with multi-colored "arrows"."Mine too. Black cover. Mockingbird with 6 different colored "arrows" piercing it, and after the title it says: The triumphant bestseller that the New York Times calls "The best of the year...exciting...marvelous" and it has a "sticker" that says The Pulitzer Prize Winner on it too.

I think it must have been re-issued for the film.
My copy is really funny because I borrowed it from a boyfriend who had borrowed it from his sister! Her name is written on the inside cover. I guess neither of us thought to return it to her! :)

Jeannette, Funny. I guess she's had plenty of opportunities to get herself another copy.I have to say the 50th anniversary edition is a relatively inexpensive hard cover but there are no bells and whistles at all.

I'll be checking out a newer edition, so I might just buy a new copy! My husband can't believe the original was 60 cents.

The original was hardcover so it might have been more actually. But still so cheap!!! I have a few 50¢ paperbacks and I think one that was 35¢.
Lee wrote: "OMG, I have the exact same edition! AND it started to fall apart as soon as I began reading."Ack! I wish I could fax you my new one. I wish paperbacks lasted better; I tend to keep my favorite books whether they're really readable or not.

I guess the glue isn't meant to last 40 years! I'll tape the cover back onto my book and then leave it alone! I'll pick up the library copy this afternoon. :)
