Jo, I love world fiction so this title got my attention. It sounds fascinating. How is it so far?

Maude | 479 comments Mona, I so want to read The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing: From the Files of Vish Puri, Most Private Investigator. So do let me know how you like it. I love the title. I have been reading some heavy stuff for the challenge so I need some lighter tomes.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude, I just readThe Case of the Missing Servant and it was a quick fun read. I pick up The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing: From the Files of Vish Puri, Most Private Investigator from the library tomorrow. I sent a message to the author and he wrote back saying he is planning 2 more :).

Maude | 479 comments Thank you Mona - I think I will try and get the first one tomorrow. I have an infected tooth and am reading a book about Caesar and Cleopatra and all the schemes and battles, etc., and I am feeling sorry for myself! I want to be cheered up with something like Vish Puri!

Ouch! Getting something (a fun book) to help you numb the pain, Maude.

Maude | 479 comments Mona, I do have pain pills but they don't seem to be working as well as usual but it is time to take them again and then I am going to bed -even tho' it is only 8:30 here. I can't see the dentist until Tuesday.

Good luck! That is a long time to wait with an infected tooth.

message 1558: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Thanks Jeanette for worrying about my tooth. I still have some pain but nothing that I can't handle until tomorrow. His office is only open 4 days a week - but I have been going to him for years and he is so gentle and nice. I am wondering if I might have to have a root canal (WHATEVER THAT IS?). I never wanted to know!

message 1559: by Susan (new)

Susan I am now reading Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce.

Oh, I know it has excellent ratings but my private book club just read it and no-one gave it more than three stars. They were quite put off by some aspects of the book so I'm very curious to see how I react.

Yes, you do not want to know about root canals. :(

I would gladly wait for a gentle dentist -- I don't enjoy the dentist all that much.

With so many people reading Nero Wolfe, I have to go out today to get one. I don't think I have seen a negative comment about these stories.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette: I don't know of anyone who looks forward to going to the dentist--unless they are crushing on the dentist or one of the hygienists.

When I was a kid, my brother and I hated going to the dentist. Of course we hated the dreaded pick. But the main reason was our dentist's hands always smelled like poop. I know, eww. We told our mom but she thought we were just making it up.

I hated the flossing. Oh, and I also hated the x-rays. I have a gag reflex so when the put those film things way in the back of my mouth, I felt like I was going to throw up.

message 1570: by [deleted user] (new)

Mona, I think we have both been traumatized by dentists, who really mean well (most of the time)! :p

message 1571: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments They do get a bad rap. But some are definitely worse than others. I remember one dentist my mom went to broke a needle in her gum and never told her. Over the next couple days, she was complaining about excruciating pain in her gums and called him back. He said she could make another appt.

Instead, she went to a different dentist and he got it out.

message 1572: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, man, that is awful! None of my dentists were ever negligent like that one. Your poor mom.

message 1573: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Yeah, Jeannette, this guy was bad news. He was kind of a social acquaintance of my parents so they didn't feel comfortable switching. But my brother and I didn't like him much. His clinic was old and in a not-so-great neighborhood. His equipment seemed out-of-date and obsolete. And he seemed more amused than apologetic when we were in pain.

Anne | 4 comments Hi Jeannette! I love mysteries but have never read Nero Wolfe. I've read a lot of James Patterson's, all of Janet Evanovich's as well as several others. Do you have a favorite mystery author or do you prefer another genre?

I read a lot of mysteries, but more in the "old-fashioned" vein, like Agatha Christie. And, I tend towards British detectives. I prefer more detecting and less graphic depiction of crimes. Favorite authors: Christie, Martha Grimes (all but the last 2 Richard Jury books), plus the fluff from authors like M. C. Beaton.

I read a lot of different genres, I guess. I am trying to get into more classic literature, too. :)

That's so gross, yuck. My dentists usually had bad breath, which kind of made you wonder about their own oral hygiene. I hope you don't have to have a root canal, Maude, they are not fun.

When we first moved to Canada, my sister was only five. And, the first dentist we went to, thought that she did not have enough room in her mouth and proceeded to yank out four teeth, without first telling my mother what he intended to do. Needless to say that we switched dentists asap. The same dentist, for some reason, put a gold cap on one of my teeth (I was ten), and then the tooth, which was a baby tooth, fell out about a year later (I think this guy was just about making as much money as possible from an immigrant family who did not know the ropes yet).

message 1579: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Thanks Gundula - I hope I don't have to, too! The medicine has helped. I always think of people before they had all this painless dentistry and how painful the procedures were - sometimes no anesthetic at all yuck!

Jeannette, M.C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series is my favorite fluff.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Trying to decide whether to go with Margarettown or Harvest or something else. The first one is overdue at the library, so I'm motivated to read it and get it returned. Maybe, I'll just renew it.

Kathy, the new series is set in Edwardian England and the two main characters are so enjoyable. I think I read the books more for their interactions than for the actual mysteries.

Oh no, no, no, no. Don't bother. I'm not even going to finish this one. I invested some time in it last night (I could have been sleeping! Or reorganizing the linen closet, or staring at the wall...so many better choices). Ack!

Christine, it was that bad? Did you buy it? I had this one on my to-read list too. BTW, have you seen the movie Outsourced? Hubby and I enjoyed that one. There is also going to be a TV series starting in September based in a call center.

message 1595: by [deleted user] (new)

I've got Outsourced in my movie queue, Mona, so it's lucky for me that you mentioned it. :)

message 1596: by [deleted user] (new)

Mona,
I didn't finish it, but looked up the ending this morning through spoiler posts here. I feel quite justified that I didn't finish it now.

I bought it used, so I could have purchased coffee and a cupcake instead...dag nammit.

You must have really disliked it to not even bother to read the ending. If I find a book of very slight interest, I'll at least skim to the end. Too bad about the coffee. :(

Christine, I just bought

Every Last One from my library's ongoing book sale even though I was in line for it. I couldn't resist. It was hardcover for $2 in new condition. I've heard good things about this book and I did skim it a little before bought it to make sure I liked the language and writing style.

Jeannette: We saw it a couple years ago. One of hubby's colleagues recommended it. We liked the premise and enjoyed it more than we expected. Move it up in your queue:). One of these days I'll start up NETFLIX again. I am really far behind in my to-watch list. Our library has a pretty decent collection and there's a lot of good stuff on TV so I never felt a pressing need.
