Chrissie Thanks Lisa, I am 9hrs ahead of you. Hmm you are reading TKAM. Maybe I can dig up my copy....... That is a book worth rereading, if I can find my copy.

Thanks Lisa, I didn't get notified about the following comments. Sorry I didn't respond sooner!

message 1504: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie You know Lee, people should NEVER get annoyed or upset when someone doesn't respond. Very rarely is the lack of a response intentional. I think we all have to give each other the benefit of the doubt. Furthermore if someone doesn't want to respond to a given question, you have to respect that too. Some people are more private, others less so!

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
I agree Chrissie. I just get annoyed when I miss something and I imagine the other person is wondering why I didn't respond. It's usually completely unintentional, sometimes there are glitches with the system and we don't get notified.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
And another thing, there is SO much going on here at Goodreads it's easy to miss comments here and there. Sometimes it's difficult to keep up!

Lee, Don't forget to follow the above thread.

You too, Chrissie. It looks like early August.

message 1508: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lee, we agree - AS USUAL!!! I have to ask you, what time is it right now when you just replied? Here it is a little after 10AM.

message 1509: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lee wrote: "Thanks Lisa, I didn't get notified about the following comments. Sorry I didn't respond sooner!"

As I said on that link/book "review" - whenever I vote on a review on comment on it, or a book in progress in this case, I check the "Email me when people reply" box so I don't lose any comments. Otherwise, it's impossible to find them.

That box was at one time not an option so I occasionally find threads I'm not following that I want to follow and I mark them then. You don't have to comment to do that. You can just click the Email me when people comment link at the bottom of the thread, don't need to use the box.

Chrissie Oh and Lisa, concerning The Bielski Brothers: The True Story of Three Men Who Defied the Nazis, Built a Village in the Forest, and Saved 1,200 Jews: I have been thinking about what you wrote in your review. There are people that choose pacifism and there are those who fight back, both types. Maybe the world needs both types. I personally prefer talking through something, rather than the physical fighting approach. However some problems are not solved by talking. Nazism wasn't going to go away by talking. Hitler was beyond talking. So then there has to be those who will take up arms. We need both types of people. Much violence can be avoided through the "talking", but not all. If I were allowed only one word to describe Tuvia, I would choose passionate. He was filled with emotions. He was sweet and he was hard. You see this characteristic in everything he did. He doesn't ask his wife whether she will follow him into the woods - he orders her! Discussion? Forget it! And don't you think a person can be pushed just so far. I am talking about people like you or me who go for the talking. You reach a point where you explode. Maybe we don't physically hurt someone but we can get, or at least I can get, terribly NASTY!!!!! And that does great harm too!!

On another subject - this book is NOT about happy moments. But dam it all if someone really needs to be comforted, if they have a real problem, reading a normally defined comforting book will not suffice. You will find yourself following the lines with your eyes, while your head is elsewhere. You need something to GRAB you and pull you away from you teeny, stupid "problems". You need to get perspective.

message 1511: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lisa I loose messages when they are only in my daily digest. I miss things b/c I skim read these digests. Instant emails are better for me. Nevertheless nothing is fullproof and we should NOT be getting annoyed at others who do ot respond!!! Rarely is it intentional.

message 1512: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 16 comments I needed a nice, light read, so I'm currently reading The Lightning Thief. I don't read nearly enough YA literature, even though I love it. I used to read a lot more of it about 8-10 years ago when I was teaching 6th grade! This one is a fun book with many similarities to Harry Potter.

message 1513: by [deleted user] (new)

Will you be posting a discussion thread here on Comfort Reads? It has been 30 years since I read TKAM. I still have the copy I borrowed from my back-then boyfriend. I would like to get my daughter to read it, too! :)

message 1514: by Lisa (last edited Jul 16, 2010 07:38AM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, I don't think so. I thought about starting a private group but I don't want hundreds or thousands of people to join, just those we know. You qualify. :-) I'm not sure what we'll do. We can keep the current thread going or do it on one of our shelved TKAM books.

Chrissie, Not annoyed at all. Just giving tips on how to keep up with messages. In this case they involved a plan to do something together, and to miss messages might mean to miss participation/not really since I would have sent a pm to Lee when plans were more firm.

Can't remember what I said in my BB review. I do think there is more than one way to fight back though. Different people took many ways. Even the various Partisan groups had different styles and took different actions.

message 1515: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lisa, I didn't think you were annoyed!!!!! I was just speaking generally.

I went on-line to update my review of BB. Some of the things Tuvia does - well, in my view he goes too far. He becomes vengeful.

message 1516: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Yes, I remember being highly disturbed by the book, for that reason (among others.)

message 1517: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Lisa! :) Whatever works out best for you. I'm just happy to have been prompted to read TKAM again after so many years. I'll need to watch the film again, too.

Lisa, Obviously I went to bed before you last night ;) Please officially consider me part of the TKAM discussion. I'll be starting it later this month or early August. Looking forward to it!

message 1519: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Okay. Guess wherever we do it, we should announce it here too.

I posted a query here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

You can also keep up with that thread to see what's decided.

I'm almost finished with the book/will finish today and start another book this afternoon, hopefully.

Well, sometimes the middle of the night is the only alone time I get to be on the computer. I can be here during the day and evening but it's not the same because I'm usually trying to do too many things at once. It's so quiet when everyone is asleep. Peaceful. I definitely shouldn't stay up THAT late though because I'm feeling it today LOL!

I've actually not gotten enough sleep lately due to the hot weather, it's too hot during the day to either sleep (nap) or do anything, and at night, it's better for thinking etc., but going to bed at three and waking up at seven is not great. Well, at least it's a bit cooler today, maybe I can actually get some reading done.

message 1525: by Chrissie (last edited Jul 16, 2010 11:51AM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy, You're not forgotten. See my Scout Atticus & Boo book thread!!!

I'm planning to start an informal discussion thread (just like the rest of our threads here) for anyone in the group who wants to say anything about To Kill a Mockingbird. It will be just an informal thread, just like any other here.

I'll start it on 8/1 since a few of us talked about discussing it together in August. (Remind me if I forget or feel free to start it...) BUT, PLEASE DON'T START IT BEFORE 8/1!!! THANKS!!!

This isn't a "group read" (we're not going to have those here).

But, feel free to start discussion threads about particular books or particular authors that are comfort reads for you, and see who jumps in.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Ooh, Change of plans. Before bed tonight or tomorrow I will start a new book. Thanks to Gundula, this book arrived today, and I've moved it to currently reading: Lottie and Lisa. I've wanted to read this book for years, ever since I learned the movie The Parent Trap was based on it.

My husband made sure she read some German classics, stuff that he remembers from when he was a kid.

Did she ever see the German film version of "Das doppelte Lottchen" (Lottie and Lisa)? It's darling, from the 50's and Erich Kästner himself wrote the screenplay (and the twin protagonists were actually played by twins). I really like Erich Kästner. I think my favourites are Das doppelte Lottchen (Lottie and Lisa, the one we're talking about) and Das fliegende Klassenzimmer. (The Flying Classroom, which is a boarding school story set in an all boys' school).

She hasn't seen the movie. I don't even really know if it is available on video. Have you seen it in Germany or Canada?

She did read Emil und die Detektive. I thought it was pretty clever.

I have it on DVD in German (unfortunately, you need a region free DVD to see it and mine recently died). I wish that they would consolidate DVDs, it's so stupid having region restrictions. I've read "Emil und die Detektive" it's Kästner's most famous kids' novel, but it's never been my favourite.

message 1542: by [deleted user] (new)

There are a few German dvds we would like to own, mostly the older movies, but we don't have a region free player. I think this region thing is a pain, too!

There are so many German DVDs I would like to see, and most of these are not available in the USA or Canada (with subtitles), mostly classics (like you want to see) and children's novels that have been made into movies, it's so frustrating not to be able to watch them. You can watch them on your computer, but with mine you can only change regions five times, then it won't do it anymore, such a pain.

I've got The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing: From the Files of Vish Puri, Most Private Investigator to pick up at the library on Monday. So far it is good. I'm about 100 pages into it, and enjoying it.
