What are you reading right now? (SEE NEW THREAD)

It is hard to talk about it without feeling like you're going to give too much away. A friend of mine was asking and I felt I didn't say enough but I couldn't. I knew something was coming but I didn't expect that.

Hi all.... have been out of commission for too long.
Am reading The Thirteenth Tale, which (along with The Shadow of the Wind) is fast becoming a new comfort read for me!! I'm having so much fun! (Subject matter a little 'ew' in parts, but that has passed for the moment).

I'm trying to pick my book right now...going through goodreads ideas.

Good luck narrowing it down. ;-)
I'll be interested in what you choose for your next book, Christine.

I'm reading Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. I haven't read any science fiction in a long while.

Just finished Eat,Pray,Love, which I decided to read because of the upcoming movie(I love Julie Roberts!)I enjoyed it:)

Good suggestion! I have read that one though. :)

I'm thinking of a classic. I haven't picked up a classic in ages.

What type of book are you in the mood for: epic, humorous, family/children, etc. etc.???
I actually think I would like to read something humorous. I think I'll put off the classic. Any ideas, Lisa?

It's a kid's book, but have you ever read A Long Way From Chicago?

Second to last! I still want to read this. :)

Well, There are many, many, many humorous classics, but if you have a warped sense of humor I really like Lisa Lutz's mystery series. The first one is The Spellman Files.
I also love Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman; it's a book of biographical essays and many are very funny.
Gosh, there are so many possibilities. Can you narrow it down?
Look at members' humor shelves? (I don't have one.)
Thank you for all of the suggestions. After looking at my stacks, I think I'm going to read The Gift of Rain: A Novel
.

Oh, oh, oh, I need to read that next then, Christine. Since I suggested it to you and I have it checked out from the library, it would be the perfect choice. I have just started The Little Stranger and am interested in it, so I will try to finish it up in a couple of days. My friend is still raving about The Gift of Rain: A Novel

Susan and Jeannette, I loved this book. I hope you all do, too.

Will do. When hubby goes back to Kansas tomorrow morning, I plan of getting a lot of reading done the rest of the day.

I am also reading
Jane Austen Ruined My Life and
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas..... I watched the movie this afternoon and loved it.... my youngest son called and asked if I had watched it today, told him I did that I would definitely have to buy the book.......... when he got home from his grandparents he had the book with him... he stopped at BAM on his way home and got it for me :)

Christine, That doesn't look funny but it looks fabulous!

Nice picture, Chrissie! Oscar, I presume?

I'm only a handful of chapters into it, but I already love it.

Books - well I just finished Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire. I really, really highly recommend it. It is non-fiction of the very best type. I learned alot and reading was thoroughly enjoyable! So now after finsihing that and Learning to Bow: Inside the Heart of Japan a little while ago, I decided to read Burnt Shadows b/c it takes place in Japan and in India and Pakistan. My newly learned info on India and Japan to will hopefully help me relate even better to the characters in this novel. It starts with romance, and I am already drawn in. Nagasaki and the end of WW2..... The writing is lyrical, but not too much so. I have only read 26 pages, so maybe I shouldn't open my mouth yet. However it is nice that it is good right from the start. Why should it be necessary to suffer in the beginning?
Clicking on the picture twice takes me to your photo page, and the picture there is much bigger. But I guessed it was Oscar, even in the tiny picture! He's a beauty. :)
Burnt Shadows sounds amazing, Chrissie. I hope you enjoy it.

Chrissie wrote: "Jeanette, I didn't know you could do that, clicking twice! I love it when people love my dog! Yeah, I hope Burnt Shadows continues to be good. I like that it takes place in several countries."
I was surprised that the GR synopsis gave away so much detail. I look forward to reading your review.
Our children, human or not, are dear to us. We want everyone else to think so too. :)

You click on the book name (you linked to it) and the front page for the book comes up, with a description. Sometimes they are very brief. Burnt Shadows was 6 paragraphs long. It did give away some of the plot.

I hope it doesn't give away too much of the story for you. I was a bit surprised that the description was so long.

Good. I feel that way about most books that I read, too.

Thanks, Lisa. I'll read it again and mention it to the librarians to get their opinion. It is a very long description.

That was the only way I could see it, too. I just guessed (correctly) that the new picture was Chrissie and Oscar. I always check out new profile pictures, especially since I have a few friends with the same names, and I like seeing the new photos.
