*sigh* I love San Francisco. I've been a couple of times, and my husband and I honeymooned there. When I (rarely) think about moving back to the states I think of SF, not my native NYC.

message 852: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Jeanette and lisa,

Ansel Adams! What a photographer! Try enlarging the cover......gorgeous!

message 853: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie, Thanks. That is much better. Still not as good as full size but that does give a much better idea of it.

Don't know about living there, but I would like to visit again.

Dawn (dawn9655) I think I'm going to do a quick read of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" over the weekend.... as prep for my vacation in Savannah!

Dawn wrote: "I think I'm going to do a quick read of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" over the weekend.... as prep for my vacation in Savannah!"

That was a good one!

message 857: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawn9655) I did enjoy it the first time around -- when the movie first came out, I read the book :). If I recall, it was a very fast, enjoyable read then, too!

message 858: by [deleted user] (new)

I wanted to visit Savannah so much after I read it. Take lots of pictures...maybe you can post a couple. :)

message 859: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawn9655) I am a picture-taking fiend :) Just bought a new point-and-shoot digital camera .... My friends and family fear me when I go on vacation. Took over 700 pictures in Arizona last year.

digital cameras are the best invention ever! No more messing around with film and being afraid to take bad shots or wasting money! Love it!

Me, too! Now my kid can take as many pictures as she likes, we download them to the laptop every day (we did this in Ireland), and then you have a clear camera for the next day!

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Kathy, CAUGHT is ready for me to pick up at my library but I won't get there until Monday.

Wow, it is so great to hear that Coben nice in person too. Did you have him autograph something for you?

I follow Coben on Twitter(but I have not been on there for a while). He tweeted a while back that a guy sitting next to him on the plane pulled out one of his books to read. And that was a first for him.

message 863: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 174 comments I am currently reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and so far, the book is really awesome!!! I can't wait to reach the ending of this book!!! Also, after I read Harry Potter, I will read Tender Morsels.

message 864: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I'm reading Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I love it. It's a great read!

message 865: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 174 comments Kimberly,

Oh! You're reading Tarzan? I never got the chance to read the actual book and I only seen the Disney movie of Tarzan. Have you seen the Disney version before?

message 866: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Ronyell wrote: "Kimberly,

Yep. I'm one of the ones in the group that was still a wee one when it came out in theaters! I was 7 when my brother and sister took me. I loved it. Still do. Can't belive that was 13 years ago!

The book is great. More adult though. I had no idea there were 24 books in the Tarzan series alone! Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a total of 91 books not including short stories, essays and articles in 38 years. I find him to be one of my favourite authors.
I've been reading some old school adventure/ sci-fi novels like Jules Verne's books and Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Lost World as of late.

Oh Mona, that got me. I actually signed up for twitter just to follow Coben, haha! Of course, I never plan to tweet, but I will probably follow some authors now.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments It's been a while since I've been on TWITTER since I spend so much time here:) You may want want to subscribe to his newsletter too.

Also, your book ratings/reviews here on Goodreads show up as Tweets unless you opt out.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Eeek! Do they really? I just signed up but I don't want all my GR activity automatically on Twitter.

message 870: by [deleted user] (new)

Seriously??? How do I opt out?

message 871: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
I just checked on my GR account settings and you have to opt in. I think we're okay.

message 872: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay...thanks, Lee.

message 873: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hello Lee & Christine:

Yes, I believe the default is to opt out of TWITTER/FACEBOOK feeds.

You can always go back to your account and click on APPS if you change your mind.

Sorry didn't mean to scare you guys. :)

message 874: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawn9655) Just started "Poppy Done to Death" by Charlaine Harris (this is an Aurora Teagarden mystery).

message 875: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) We definitely have to opt in to have our Goodreads account connected with facebook &/or twitter. And it's not so easy to do.

I did it then undid it with facebook at one point. All 3 of mine are separate. And, I really spend time only here at goodreads.

message 876: by [deleted user] (new)

Reading O Jerusalem again. The Russell Holmes series is definitely on my list of comfort reads.

message 877: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Having finished Ali and Nino: A Love Story, which I will give 5 stars, I am now reading The Orientalist: Solving the Mystery of a Strange and Dangerous Life, a biography of the author who wrote Ali and Nino. Probably the book was written both by Kurban Said, who was actually Lev Nussimbaum and Baroness Elfriede Ehrenfels. It is also debatable who exactly wrote The Girl from the Golden Horn.

Chrissie, That will be so interesting!

message 879: by Chrissie (last edited May 16, 2010 10:10AM) (new)

Chrissie The two books are different but Ali and Nino could very well have represented Lev's and Elfriede's own experiences with different cultures, religions and places.

Now I have finally written a review, but I do not do the book justice!

message 883: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I love Life Among the Savages altho' I haven't read it again in a long time. The follow-up book to this is Raising Demons.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Ok, Maude, I just added RAISING DEMONS to my list.

Peregrine | 91 comments Starting The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham. On the back cover of my library copy is written: "The Painted Veil is a beautifully written affirmation of the human capacity to grow, to change, and to forgive." Based on that, I'm interested.

I liked the book but it had to grow on me. I've heard the movie is even better.

message 889: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I loved the movie.

message 890: by [deleted user] (last edited May 16, 2010 09:16PM) (new)

I heard that the movie has a "slightly" different ending. I shouldn't have liked this book, based on my usual feelings about these types of stories. But, I just loved reading this. The author made me see and feel everything that was he was describing.

Hints about endings are spoilers, no?

message 892: by [deleted user] (last edited May 16, 2010 09:35PM) (new)

That's really not much of a spoiler, is it? Unless you've seen the film.

I tried not to give anything away, but I'm truly sorry if I did. I hope I'm just leaving you guessing. :)

{I edited my post (message 941), but you'll have to edit your post (message 942) to get rid of my spoiler.}

Yes, Mona, I got him to autograph several books. So cool! I think I'll add him to my Twitter authors, sounds like he has some interesting tweets. I don't use it often, but it's worth checking on what authors tweet sometimes.

Oh, Lisa, I loved the movie, too. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't read the book, as I usually read the book first. I am adding it to my summer list though.

message 895: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Right now, I'm reading Frost: Poems, which is a collection of Robert Frost's poetry. I'm also reading The Bell Witch: An American Haunting by Brent Monahan, and I'm re-reading Stephen King's Rage, found in The Bachman Books.

message 896: by [deleted user] (new)

Catching up in your free time, Jess? :)

message 897: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments After finishing the wonderful latest and last book by Steig Larsson, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, I decided I need a light, comfort read. So, I am reading Mary Higgins Clark's latest, The Shadow of Your Smile. Her books are rather predictable, but there is a mind resting comfort in them.

message 898: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Yes, Kathy, I don't get on TWITTER nearly as much as I used to. But I also subscribe to Harlan Coben's newsletter to see if he's coming out with anything new.

Going to library today to pick up CAUGHT.

I am trying something very new for me - 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill. I don't usually like short stories, but these are really very interesting and original. Just found out that Joe Hill is Stephen King's son - he obviously inherited the creativity gene!
